Chapter 3

Author: Tomato Bun
"Then I'm out too."

Brooke panicked.

"No. Everyone's going!"

The shout killed every other sound in the office.

In my first life I never understood why she was so desperate to drag the whole cohort into that company.

I found out later that going after me was only half of it. Brooke had been sleeping with my fiancé, Marcus Hale, and she was also drowning under the private loans she'd taken out to keep up the rich-girl act.

Meridian Global Partners had promised her a thousand dollars for every student she delivered.

She caught everyone staring and made herself smile.

"Nobody needs to panic. The company belongs to a relative of mine. The salary is a favor to me. They sponsor college students all the time — it isn't a scam."

She gestured at Rachel and Dylan.

"They know. They both toured the offices with me."

Rachel nodded fast. "A town car picked us up. Afterward the CEO's assistant took us out for a seafood buffet that had to cost a fortune."

Dylan thumped his chest.

"I'll vouch for it. I heard the chairman call her his niece with my own ears."

He looked over at me, not bothering to hide the sneer.

"Brooke has enough pull to get us a salary like that at a company like that. Some people offer us work at their own family's plant and still only pay three thousand. What do they think we're worth?"

The relief went through the room like a held breath letting go.

Brooke turned to me with her face arranged into wounded innocence.

"Ms. Morgan, I know finding everyone a good placement may have cost you a payday, but you don't get to call me a fraud over it.

"We're all adults. We can size up an employer and pick where we work. You're our adviser, not our guardian."

Inside, I was laughing.

If she wanted a performance, she'd get one.

I sighed like a woman weighed down by concern.

"You are adults. You're also students of this university, and if something happens on a placement I signed off on, it comes back here.

"So now that I know about this offer, I'm making the calls. At the very least, the school needs to run the employer's credentials."

Diane nodded. "Agreed. Nobody should be going anywhere until that company's been checked."

Brooke's expression froze.

She didn't want the university or the parents anywhere near this. A real look at the paperwork could turn up what she stood to make per head.

Sure enough, the second I picked up my phone, she blurted it out.

"Director Hale already knows. I reported the placement to him."

I raised an eyebrow.

The fish had taken the bait.

In my first life, Marcus cut me loose the moment the complaint was filed. When the investigators wanted evidence, he took our private conversations about the internships, stripped out the context, and submitted them as a statement. Every line, on its own, made me look like a woman selling her authority.

On the day I died, I begged him for help. He just held Brooke against him and watched.

That was when I found out how long they'd been at it behind my back.

This time I'd get to watch Brooke walk the man who protected her straight into the ground.

Marcus showed up not long after the call.

The moment Brooke saw him, the tears arrived in her voice.

"Director Hale, Ms. Morgan is insisting I'm running a scam. She wants to call every parent and frighten everyone off.

"All I did was help people find an internship, and because she didn't get her commission she's accusing me of a crime."

Marcus didn't ask a single question about what had happened. He just frowned at me like the verdict was already in.

"Ms. Morgan, is this how you handle students?

"I inspected that company myself. Over ten million in registered capital, offices downtown. There's nothing wrong with it."

Marcus Hale was dismissed and referred to prosecutors for criminal negligence and assisting a fraud.According to the reporting, on the day they came for him he broke down outside his father's house and begged for half an hour to be pulled out of it.His father had spent his career as a senior official with the state education board. In the end, all he said was: you reap what you sow.Brooke was formally charged with acting as an intermediary, taking recruitment payments, and helping a criminal organization lure her classmates out of the country.A psychiatric evaluation found she'd been fully competent throughout the planning and the recruiting, and fully responsible for what she did.Her parents came to campus to file her withdrawal paperwork. I watched from across the quad. Her mother could barely stay on her feet for crying. Her father's face was iron-gray, and his hand shook through every signature. They walked out one behind the other, both of them stooped like something h

"I'm fine, Dad."Of course nothing about it was fine.Over the following weeks the scandal rolled downhill and picked up everything in its path. The state education board opened an investigation. Police coordinated across borders. Reporters chased every new development, and the public got angrier by the day.It sat at the top of the trending lists for the better part of a week. The first headlines read, "Twenty-Seven Students Vanish Overseas After University-Approved Internship." Then, "Inside the Recruitment Pipeline Behind Fake Job Offers." Then, "Video: Administrator Destroys Adviser's Phone to Stop Parent Calls."Once the office recording got out, the clip of Marcus hurling my phone through the window and threatening me was everywhere. The comments called him criminally negligent and said he'd treated a room full of kids as disposable. Then investigators surfaced his private messages with Brooke. Every exchange in them was intimate.Brooke's loan records came out too, along

"She went with them," I said quietly.Marcus spun toward me. The panic in his eyes turned into something uglier."You knew that company was dirty, didn't you? That's why you were so determined to make those calls."You did it on purpose. This was your cohort, and you let them walk out so you could hang the whole thing on me."I watched him come apart and let out a small, disbelieving laugh."Director Hale, don't start biting at everyone in the room because it's gone wrong."I wanted to call the parents because the offer wasn't safe and because telling them was my job."I glanced toward the corner of the ceiling."The office is monitored, and half the faculty was standing right there. The recording will show exactly what you said and what you did — including the part where you took my authority over that cohort away from me."Marcus went very still.Diane came out from behind the crowd. Her voice wasn't loud, but it didn't waver."President Wallace, I witnessed it. Director H

"Don't give us the runaround!"A middle-aged man cut me off."I'm asking you one thing. Where is my son? You're his adviser. Did you know he was going off on an internship?""I did know." I raised a hand to finish. "Brooke Hayes brought the placement to the cohort as a company owned by a relative of hers. Eighteen thousand a month, overseas retreat included."My first reaction was that it wasn't credible, and I said right there that I was going to call every one of you.""So did you?" a woman demanded.Gerald frowned at me too."Ms. Morgan, if you suspected fraud, why didn't you contact the parents? Why wasn't the employer flagged to this office?"I looked at him, then at Marcus, pale and silent in the corner."Because Director Hale ordered me to stay out of it."Marcus jerked upright."Claire, don't lie. I never said any such thing."I turned away from him and spoke to the room."I tried to make those calls from my office. Director Hale stopped me. He told me he'd inspect

Dylan was loud on an ordinary day and no smarter in a crisis. He shoved his way forward, planted himself next to Brooke, put his hands on his hips, and shouted at the two of them."Who do you think you're talking to? Brooke is the chairman's niece. She spoke to him before we ever got on this plane."Is this how you treat her people? Wait until we get there — I'll have the chairman fire every one of—""Dylan!"Brooke yanked his arm so hard her voice cracked.Too late. The man with the gold tooth stopped smiling. He came up out of his seat, his head nearly brushing the roof, and drove a foot into Dylan's stomach. Then he reached into the black bag and drew a short knife."Say it again. Who exactly are you yelling at?"The bus went dead silent.Rachel screamed and clapped a hand over her mouth. Liam froze. Lily slid down behind her seat.Dylan's face went from red to white. His lips shook."What... what do you want?"The man laughed and tapped the flat of the blade against D

The bus had been driving for almost two hours with no sign of a destination.Rachel pressed her face to the window, stared for a long moment, then tapped Liam Price in the seat ahead of her."Have you checked the map? Are we going the wrong way?"Liam swiped at his screen and passed the phone back, frowning."I've been watching it. The marker says we're deep in the mountains. And look."He turned the screen around. No service. The color went out of Rachel's face. She nudged Dylan and dropped her voice."Do you have a signal?"He pulled out his phone and his brow furrowed."No. Nothing. Maybe there aren't enough towers out here."We've been driving two hours. Why does the road keep getting worse?"Zoe Miller leaned over from the row behind, a tremor working into her voice."I thought they were taking us for massages. Are we getting them on a mountain?"The whispering got louder. Students who'd been sprawled asleep across their seats started waking up.Lily Hart rubbed her
