Chapter 4

Author: Tomato Bun
"Sign their off-campus placement forms. Don't make these kids late for work."

Marcus wore such a look of righteous authority that I nearly applauded.

What I said was, "No."

His face darkened. "Claire, are you deliberately taking me on?"

"I'm looking out for my students."

He drew a breath and changed his tone.

"If you're going to be like this, then you and I may need to reconsider the wedding."

Brooke's eyes lit up.

Diane hurried in between us. "Director Hale, the two of you can talk this through calmly. Don't drag your personal life into a professional disagreement."

She glanced at me. "Claire, if the director inspected the company himself, maybe it isn't as bad as it looks. Maybe—"

I shook my head and looked straight at him.

"If you want to end it, I agree."

Something shifted behind his eyes. He clearly hadn't expected me to take it without a fight.

"But I'm not authorizing a single placement until we've spoken to their families."

Brooke stepped in with a helpful smile.

"Ms. Morgan, Director Hale runs the whole program. He must have his reasons. Contradicting him in front of this many students is pretty disrespectful, don't you think?"

That was the last of Marcus's restraint.

He snatched the phone out of my hand and threw it out the sixth-floor window.

"You're impossible."

His voice carried to every desk in the office.

"Nobody needs Claire's permission. I'll approve these internships myself."

He jerked his chin at the group.

"My office. I'll sign every form personally."

The students stared for a second, then erupted.

"Director Hale's the best!"

"Finally, somebody reasonable."

"Come on, we don't have to beg her."

The crowd poured out into the hall. Brooke went last. At the doorway she looked back at me, triumph all over her face.

Diane sighed. "Claire... was that really necessary?"

I looked down through the window at the pieces of my phone scattered across the concrete and didn't answer.

Within days they'd all signed on at Meridian.

Their feeds turned into a nonstop advertisement for their wonderful new lives.

Rachel posted the free coffee and imported snacks in the break room. Her caption read, "Third day on the job and I've already gained two pounds."

Dylan photographed himself giving a thumbs-up in the company gym. "This is what a real corporation looks like."

The rest showed off dual-monitor workstations and marveled that the chairs were ergonomic.

"Intern life is amazing. There's hardly any work."

"Thank you, Brooke, for carrying this entire cohort!"

Brooke posted every single day. One afternoon it was a seafood spread for the department. The next it was cake and specialty drinks delivered to the floor.

A month in, she uploaded a collage of more than twenty boarding passes, tagged at the international terminal.

"Somebody almost destroyed our futures, but we held the line. Thank you to the person I love for backing me without question, and thank you all for trusting me."

It already had dozens of likes. The comments were nothing but praise for their fearless class president.

After they landed, they posted a group shot in front of the bus waiting to collect them.

"Arrived safe! The service here is unreal. We're barely off the plane and they're already taking us out for a real local massage."

Every face in the picture was beaming at the camera.

I took a calm sip of my coffee.

Smile away, I thought. I hope you're all still smiling in an hour.

Sure enough, by the time that bus reached the end of the road, Brooke and the rest of them weren't laughing anymore.

  • I Stopped Saving My Students   Chapter 10

Marcus Hale was dismissed and referred to prosecutors for criminal negligence and assisting a fraud.According to the reporting, on the day they came for him he broke down outside his father's house and begged for half an hour to be pulled out of it.His father had spent his career as a senior official with the state education board. In the end, all he said was: you reap what you sow.Brooke was formally charged with acting as an intermediary, taking recruitment payments, and helping a criminal organization lure her classmates out of the country.A psychiatric evaluation found she'd been fully competent throughout the planning and the recruiting, and fully responsible for what she did.Her parents came to campus to file her withdrawal paperwork. I watched from across the quad. Her mother could barely stay on her feet for crying. Her father's face was iron-gray, and his hand shook through every signature. They walked out one behind the other, both of them stooped like something h

"I'm fine, Dad."Of course nothing about it was fine.Over the following weeks the scandal rolled downhill and picked up everything in its path. The state education board opened an investigation. Police coordinated across borders. Reporters chased every new development, and the public got angrier by the day.It sat at the top of the trending lists for the better part of a week. The first headlines read, "Twenty-Seven Students Vanish Overseas After University-Approved Internship." Then, "Inside the Recruitment Pipeline Behind Fake Job Offers." Then, "Video: Administrator Destroys Adviser's Phone to Stop Parent Calls."Once the office recording got out, the clip of Marcus hurling my phone through the window and threatening me was everywhere. The comments called him criminally negligent and said he'd treated a room full of kids as disposable. Then investigators surfaced his private messages with Brooke. Every exchange in them was intimate.Brooke's loan records came out too, along

"She went with them," I said quietly.Marcus spun toward me. The panic in his eyes turned into something uglier."You knew that company was dirty, didn't you? That's why you were so determined to make those calls."You did it on purpose. This was your cohort, and you let them walk out so you could hang the whole thing on me."I watched him come apart and let out a small, disbelieving laugh."Director Hale, don't start biting at everyone in the room because it's gone wrong."I wanted to call the parents because the offer wasn't safe and because telling them was my job."I glanced toward the corner of the ceiling."The office is monitored, and half the faculty was standing right there. The recording will show exactly what you said and what you did — including the part where you took my authority over that cohort away from me."Marcus went very still.Diane came out from behind the crowd. Her voice wasn't loud, but it didn't waver."President Wallace, I witnessed it. Director H

"Don't give us the runaround!"A middle-aged man cut me off."I'm asking you one thing. Where is my son? You're his adviser. Did you know he was going off on an internship?""I did know." I raised a hand to finish. "Brooke Hayes brought the placement to the cohort as a company owned by a relative of hers. Eighteen thousand a month, overseas retreat included."My first reaction was that it wasn't credible, and I said right there that I was going to call every one of you.""So did you?" a woman demanded.Gerald frowned at me too."Ms. Morgan, if you suspected fraud, why didn't you contact the parents? Why wasn't the employer flagged to this office?"I looked at him, then at Marcus, pale and silent in the corner."Because Director Hale ordered me to stay out of it."Marcus jerked upright."Claire, don't lie. I never said any such thing."I turned away from him and spoke to the room."I tried to make those calls from my office. Director Hale stopped me. He told me he'd inspect

Dylan was loud on an ordinary day and no smarter in a crisis. He shoved his way forward, planted himself next to Brooke, put his hands on his hips, and shouted at the two of them."Who do you think you're talking to? Brooke is the chairman's niece. She spoke to him before we ever got on this plane."Is this how you treat her people? Wait until we get there — I'll have the chairman fire every one of—""Dylan!"Brooke yanked his arm so hard her voice cracked.Too late. The man with the gold tooth stopped smiling. He came up out of his seat, his head nearly brushing the roof, and drove a foot into Dylan's stomach. Then he reached into the black bag and drew a short knife."Say it again. Who exactly are you yelling at?"The bus went dead silent.Rachel screamed and clapped a hand over her mouth. Liam froze. Lily slid down behind her seat.Dylan's face went from red to white. His lips shook."What... what do you want?"The man laughed and tapped the flat of the blade against D

The bus had been driving for almost two hours with no sign of a destination.Rachel pressed her face to the window, stared for a long moment, then tapped Liam Price in the seat ahead of her."Have you checked the map? Are we going the wrong way?"Liam swiped at his screen and passed the phone back, frowning."I've been watching it. The marker says we're deep in the mountains. And look."He turned the screen around. No service. The color went out of Rachel's face. She nudged Dylan and dropped her voice."Do you have a signal?"He pulled out his phone and his brow furrowed."No. Nothing. Maybe there aren't enough towers out here."We've been driving two hours. Why does the road keep getting worse?"Zoe Miller leaned over from the row behind, a tremor working into her voice."I thought they were taking us for massages. Are we getting them on a mountain?"The whispering got louder. Students who'd been sprawled asleep across their seats started waking up.Lily Hart rubbed her
