Rainee Bianco stood at the front of the room, acting like she had everything under control.

"Stop running around. The hallway's blocked, so we can't get out. Everyone, move into the triangle zones in the corners and wait for rescue. We'll be fine."

My terrified classmates started cramming into the corners.

I stared at Rainee's self-righteous face, my head spinning.

I was back.

Back at the exact moment the earthquake hit in my last life.

After Rainee got drunk and drowned, Tristan lured me to the edge of a cliff.

Then he pointed at my right leg—the one I'd ruined saving him—and clenched his jaw.

"Kayla Kendall, that crippled leg has chained me to you for seven years. You really think I would've chosen you if I didn't owe you my life?

"If I hadn't been with you, Rainee wouldn't have been heartbroken. She wouldn't have gotten drunk, and she wouldn't have died.

"You killed her. Go keep her company."

Then he shoved me.

"Kayla, what are you doing? Come with me!"

Tristan's voice snapped me back.

He clamped onto my hand and dragged me toward the back corner, his eyes bloodshot.

I yanked back, but his grip wouldn't budge.

"Let go! That spot isn't safe!"

Tristan only tightened his hold and shot me a glare.

"Cut it out," he said through clenched teeth. "I'm not letting you run off again. Stay with me in the triangle zone, and you won't lose a single hair. Don't play hero this time. And don't even think about making me owe you."

My stomach dropped.

Again.

Owe me.

I stared at his panicked face as it clicked.

'So he came back too.'

In my last life, Tristan had run for the triangle zone the second the alarm went off.

I risked everything to drag him back and pull him out the third-floor window with me.

I took the hit protecting him.

My right leg shattered, leaving me permanently disabled.

He walked away without a scratch and promised to take care of me forever.

But it wasn't gratitude.

To him, I was a debt. A chain he never asked for.

Now he was back too.

And this time, he didn't want me saving him.

He didn't want to owe me again.

So he actually thought pinning me inside some bogus triangle zone would change everything.

"Tristan, are you insane? Let go."

I gave a cold laugh and kicked him hard in the shin.

Tristan flinched, but his grip stayed locked.

Instead, he moved closer, almost pinning me against the wall.

"You seriously have to do this? You think jumping makes you some kind of hero? Do you even realize you'll break your leg?"

"Why? Why do you get to go to Borevia while I got expelled? I live like a dog now, hiding in some dark room and rotting away. Kayla, why didn't you save me?"He snapped, roaring like a maniac."Last time, you would've risked your life for me! So why'd you just stand there and watch me lose my legs? You ruined everything! You did this to me!"I stared at him, ice-cold."Are you seriously delusional? You made your choice. You chose Rainee. This is where your choices got you. If you're miserable and humiliated, good."I stepped closer and looked down at him."When you shoved me off that cliff last time, did you ever think about how much I suffered?"At the word "cliff," Tristan went ghost-white.He finally got it.I remembered everything. And I'd been out for revenge from day one."If I can't have a good life, neither can you! We'll die together!"Tristan roared like an animal. He yanked a shiny kitchen knife from under his wheelchair cushion and hurled himself at me.His wh

"There's ten grand in there. Just a little thank-you. We know you and Tristan never got along. All you have to do is tell the police he had a history of harassing girls."The money's yours, and Rainee will treat you like her best friend from now on."I weighed the envelope in my hand and sneered. These two would do anything to save their daughter.Too bad they picked the wrong girl."Ten grand for false testimony? You seriously think I'm that desperate?"I put on my best greedy look.Mrs. Bianco took the bait."If that's not enough, we can pay more. Twenty thousand. Just tell the police Tristan assaulted Rainee, and we'll transfer it right away. His life's already ruined. Helping us only benefits you."My fingers brushed the phone recording in my pocket.Every word was on tape."Twenty grand does sound tempting."Then I whipped the envelope into Mr. Bianco's face."But your money's filthy. Use it to bail your precious daughter out of jail."The envelope smacked him hard e

His face was ghost-white.The blanket had slipped down, revealing two empty pant legs.Everything below his knees was gone.At the sound of the door, Tristan whipped around. The second he saw me, his face lit up."Kayla, you came."He tossed the glass aside and reached for me."I knew you still cared. Come here. Please hold me. It hurts so bad."He sobbed like a little kid, trying to melt me with tears. In my last life, every time he shut me out, one tiny crack in his armor was enough.I'd forgive him like an idiot. He thought this time would be the same.I walked to the bed, crossed my arms, and looked down at him."You look pathetic."Tristan's sobs died in his throat. He stared up at me, stunned."What are you talking about? Aren't you here to stay with me?"I laughed."Stay with you? A cripple who can't even get out of bed without help? No. I came with good news."I leaned closer and looked straight into his terrified eyes."Rainee gave the police her statement.
