Chapter 7

作者: Fortune Mind
The villa was quiet at 10:00 pm that night. Mom and Dad were fast asleep, and there was only a faint light in the hallway.

I pushed open the door leading into the study on the second floor.

The main lights in the study weren't turned on. There was only a desk lamp shining on the table.

Desiree was sitting on the leather chair behind the desk, toying with a pen between her fingers. When she saw me enter, she pointed to the chair opposite her and gestured for me to sit down.

The guests around us retreated in fright as Mom and Dad watched Dexter on the floor in shock."Has he gone mad?" someone muttered. It was clear that the pain from the forced detachment was extreme and excruciating. Dexter's features contorted, his once handsome face withered rapidly, and clumps of his hair also fell out.His prized "fortune-stealing" system was completely stripped away from him, and it aged him instantly by a dozen years, leaving him looking like a dejected, disheveled person."Dante Hoffman! I'm going to kill you! This is all your fault!" Dexter screamed at the top of his lungs. In the final moment before the system was completely stripped from him, he went totally mad. He suddenly grabbed a kitchen knife from somewhere, leaped up from the ground, and lunged at me like a madman.I stood still without dodging.Desiree reacted quickly, grabbing Dexter's wrist and twisting it forcefully, dislocating his arm with a loud, sickening crack. The kitchen knife then clat

I remained completely calm and walked straight up to the microphone. Then, I cleared my throat and spoke, my voice booming loudly and clearly throughout the hall."You've got quite a way with your words, Dexter. It's really a pity that you're not in the national debate team. They would've loved to have you."You say that I stole the signet ring, but what proof do you have? Are we all supposed to just take your word for it?"Dexter straightened up and retorted loudly, "If you never stole the ring, do you dare to let us thoroughly search you or your room for it now?""That's too much of a hassle," I said, interrupting him before turning to Desiree. "Des, since something's been stolen from the house, let's call the police. While we're at it, we should also show everyone the surveillance footage."Dexter's face turned deathly pale the moment he heard me mention the surveillance footage. His eyes flickered as he said, "We never installed a surveillance camera in the hallway! Stop bluff

"Then what should we do now?" I asked, finally calming down as I looked at Desiree. "My life will still be in danger as long as Dexter's system is around."A murderous glint appeared in her eyes. "Easy. The system is only bound to him because it values his fortune and status."As long as we ruin Dexter's reputation in this family and strip him of all his glory, making him fall from grace, the system will detect that he is no longer of any value and forcibly detach from him. When that happens, we'll be able to manipulate him with ease. After all, he's just a worthless piece of trash."I inhaled deeply and nodded."Alright. Let's work together and defeat him."…Dexter's life had become much harder ever since my passive attitude of slacking off caused the bug in his system. The depletion of the system's energy also meant that Dexter constantly suffered from its backlash.Over the past few days, he would always find himself in tons of unlucky and inconvenient situations, such as ch

I felt all the blood freezing in my body as I held the arms of the chair in a death grip until my knuckles turned white. How did she know? Surely nobody else would find out about something as absurd and ridiculous as my rebirth, would they? When Desiree saw my alarmed expression, she sighed and pushed a thick notebook toward me."Don't panic. I'm not your enemy. To be precise, we're actually in the same boat," she said

The next day at breakfast, Dexter kicked me violently under the table when Mom and Dad weren't watching. He lowered his voice and demanded menacingly, "What the hell are you playing at? You were never sick to begin with, were you? You were just fucking around with me!"I looked up and answered him loudly and sincerely, "You're right, Dexter! I did think that the pancakes today were a bit too sweet. Maybe next time we should ask Fiona not to put too much icing sugar on them!"My sudden loud voice startled Mom and Dad, who were just walking into the dining room. Mom immediately told the housekeeper, Fiona Bowen, "Heard that? Don't put too much powdered sugar on the pancakes next time. Dante isn't used to foods that are too sweet."Dexter turned purple with rage. He held a hand to his chest and staggered backward. He was currently being hailed as a "miracle maker" and "the most selfless brother in the world" by our parents, and they praised him constantly in front of their friends and

Dexter took advantage of my momentary lapse in attention and cornered me against the couch. Then, he turned the megaphone to its highest volume setting and pointed it directly at my ear."Quit playing the traumatized victim card, Dante Hoffman!"His deafening voice exploded in the otherwise silent living room, making my eardrums ache and my head buzz non-stop.He then continued yelling and screaming in my ear while reaching out and grabbing me by my shoulders, shaking me violently until my teeth chattered."I don't care anymore! You'd better open that damn mouth of yours and speak today, you damn liar! Speak up! Speak the hell up!"I was shaken so hard that I began to feel dizzy, but I forced myself not to fight back. Then, my lips curled into a smirk. It was time.I suddenly released my grip, and the notebook I'd always held tightly in my hands fell to the floor with a soft thud.I widened my eyes at him and gasped, my eyes filled with utter shock and disbelief.Just as Mom a
