Chapter 3

Author: Isla Shaw
The next day, I couldn't unlock the front door with my fingerprint anymore, and the lock alarm went off three times in a row.

Standing outside the door, I heard the sound of slippers shuffling on the floor inside.

When the door opened, Zack was standing in the entryway. He had my slippers on and was wearing the men's bathrobe Irene had bought me. He was also holding the blue mug I'd used for five years.

The moment he saw me, he froze for a second. Then, his eyes reddened.

"Gavin, why did you suddenly come back?"

I looked past him into the apartment. The photo of me and Irene on the entryway cabinet was gone. Now, there was a note listing pregnancy precautions on the fridge.

"Pregnant women must not be startled."

"Avoid severe emotional distress."

"Maintain a stable living environment."

After each one was Irene's familiar red check mark.

She walked out of the bedroom with my blanket in her arms. When she saw me, she faltered in her steps.

"Why didn't you tell me that you were coming back beforehand?"

"I came to get my things."

Her expression softened for a moment. But what she said next pushed me firmly away all the same.

"Good timing. Pack a few clothes and go stay at a hotel for a while."

The apartment was in Irene's name. But I had chosen the curtains, picked out the lamps, and pieced the dinnerware together.

I'd always thought that after five years here, this place was at least half my home. Well, it turned out it wasn't.

"How long should I stay at the hotel?" I asked.

"Don't come back until the baby is born."

I stood there without moving.

"Is this your idea?"

"It's also the doctor's suggestion." Irene paused. Then, as if worried I hadn't quite understood, she added, "The sight of your things sets Zack off, and I can't even rest. Gavin, just let him have this one."

But I'd already stepped aside for him on the rooftop and given up the wedding. And now I was supposed to keep giving in?

I set the yellow notebook on the entryway cabinet and opened it to the second page.

"Are you advising me to move out?"

Irene's brow visibly twitched when she saw the notebook.

"Gavin, don't write everything down. Moving is a big deal."

However, Zack took a step forward just then.

"Gavin, you've got friends and a job—you can stay anywhere. But Irene is pregnant, and she can't sleep the moment she sees anything the two of you used before. What if she gets too worked up and something happens to the baby?"

"Zack's right," Irene chimed in without hesitation. She looked up at me and finally said the most hurtful thing. "Gavin, I'm seriously advising you to move out. Best to take everything with you and leave nothing behind."

I held the pen. "Please confirm it once more."

Irene's throat tightened. But she still looked me in the eye and said, "Confirmed. Take everything with you."

I put a check mark on the second page too.

On the first trip, I moved clothes and books.

On the second trip, I moved the computer, bedding, and the small kitchen appliances I'd bought.

On the last trip, when I came to move the things in the bedroom, Irene finally couldn't hold back and pressed her hand down on the cardboard box.

"That's about enough. You're just going to stay at a hotel. I didn't tell you to tear the house apart."

I picked up the framed photo on the bedside table.

"I'm in this photo too. Zack will feel uncomfortable seeing it, and you won't be able to rest too."

Irene was stumped for a moment.

I kept searching. There was still a yellowed sticky note stuck against the side of the fridge. It was from five years ago—the first night Irene had brought me back from Daleton. Afraid that I'd leave again after taking someone's advice, she had specially written it.

"Don't let Gavin leave. Don't tell Gavin to go. Even if Irene says so, it doesn't count."

I held up the sticky note.

"Which do I listen to? This or what you said today?"

Irene reached out to take it. The moment her fingertip touched the paper, she suddenly covered her mouth. Then, she turned her head away and began to dry heave.

Zack immediately stepped forward to support her.

"Irene, are you okay?"

When she spoke again after a moment, her voice was cold as a blade.

"I only wrote that to keep you happy back then. Don't take it seriously."

I nodded and tossed the sticky note into the trash can.

As I was finally leaving, I put the keys and the access card in the glass bowl by the entryway.

Irene pressed her hand over mine.

"You're not taking the keys?"

"You told me to move out completely."

"You can still come back after a while."

"So, are you advising me to stay or go?"

She fell silent.

Zack lowered his head and said softly, "Gavin, could you knock first when you come back next time? Irene's a light sleeper, and she gets nervous when she hears a key in the lock."

The next second, Irene turned and walked to the door lock. She entered the admin password, and a robotic female voice rang out.

"Are you sure you want to delete the user Gavin?"

I simply looked at her back and said nothing.

In the end, she pressed "confirm".

"User Gavin deleted."

It was as if the door were repeating Irene's earlier "move out completely".

With my head bowed, I quietly put a check mark on the back of the second page.

Just as the elevator doors were about to close, Irene came running out after me.

"Gavin."

I looked up at her.

Her lips parted, but in the end she only said, "Don't make it look like I kicked you out."

I glanced at the three suitcases by my feet.

"But I'm just doing what you told me to—moving out completely."

A year later, I went back to my high school for its anniversary celebration.Mr. Alfred Buck, who'd once told me that I was only good enough to be a garbage collector, had already retired. He'd taken a bus for two stops just to come. Now, he was standing outside the auditorium, nervously rubbing his hands together."Gavin, I spoke too harshly back then. I've always wanted to advise you not to take it to heart."I didn't nod immediately the way I used to. Instead, I asked him earnestly, "Do you truly believe you were wrong?"Mr. Buck was stunned for a moment, and his eyes suddenly reddened."Yes.""I'll think it over, then."Mr. Buck froze for two seconds, then finally laughed."Alright, take your time."It turned out I didn't need to answer on the spot every time someone offered me advice. After the speech ended, I found Irene standing by the sports field. She hadn't come looking for me once this past year.Whenever Dominic brought her up, he only said that she'd had the ba

A month later, Irene sent me a list of my belongings. She didn't try to talk me into going back. Instead, she only asked, "What do you want to do with all this stuff?"After thinking it over for a night, I bought a ticket back. The apartment had already been restored to how it first looked. The list of pregnancy precautions was gone, but my photos weren't back up on the wall either. All that remained were a few patches of uneven paint, like old wounds scraped away by force.Three documents sat on the table. The first was a record of the renovation payments I'd made over the last five years, the second was half the wedding deposit, and the third was my share of the money in our joint account.Irene slid the bank card over and said in a low voice, "I should've returned this to you a long time ago. It's not compensation or me begging you to come back."I accepted it. The money was mine to begin with, and taking back what belonged to me didn't require putting on a show of being the

The second family dinner was in the same private room, at the same table, and with the same crowd.Even the temporary chair I had sat in last time was still placed beside the serving hatch.Instead of taking that seat, I walked over and grabbed another chair by its back. Then, I dragged it to the center of the table. The chair's legs scraped across the floor tiles with a harsh grating sound that drowned out all the chatter.Mr. Parker could barely keep the smile on his face."Everyone's here. If you have something to say, say it quickly."I set the yellow notebook on the table."Last time, I told you all Irene and I had broken up and that it was my fault for pestering her. Today, I won't say anything. Irene, you'll do the talking."When Irene's eyes fell on the third page of the notebook, her face slowly drained of color.I looked at her and asked, "First question. Did we break up seven months ago?"The whole table went quiet.Irene swallowed before answering, "No."I opened

Half an hour after the door shut, there was another knock.I assumed it was Irene. But when I opened it, Zack was standing there. His face was pale, and his eyes were burning with something close to madness. He held his phone up to me. On it was a drafted message."I have never loved you, and I didn't leave out of spite. I'm never coming back. You're better off with Zack and the baby. I advise you to marry him."Gazing at me, Zack said in a trembling voice, "Send this to Irene. As long as you tell her you never loved her and advise her to marry me, she'll give up."I didn't take the phone."And then what?""Irene and I get married, the baby grows up in a whole family, and people finally stop talking about me behind my back.""What about me?"Zack froze for a moment. "You've already left. What difference does it make if you give in one last time?""It does." I stared at the words "I have never loved you", feeling as if a needle were slowly piercing through my heart. "I've lov

Three months later, my friend, Dominic Hooper, sent me a wedding invitation. Unlike the others, he didn't push me to go back.Instead, all he wrote on the back of the invitation was, "Gavin, do you want to come?"I mulled it over for two days. In the end, I bought a ticket back.On the day of the wedding, the moment I walked into the ballroom, I heard people whispering behind me."How does he still have the nerve to come back?""Didn't he admit that he was pestering Irene?""Irene's here today too. He's not going to cause a scene again, is he?"Across the room full of guests, I lifted my head.Irene stood at the other end of the ballroom. Her baby bump was already showing. The wine glass in her hand tipped, spilling sparkling water across the sleeve of her gown. When she saw me, she froze. After the wedding ended, I went back to the hotel. The moment I swiped the door open, Irene came chasing after me from the end of the hallway."Gavin, come home with me."I stared at he

At 12:54 am, Irene hurried into the waiting hall. She was breathing hard. Her face was pale, and her forehead was slick with cold sweat. The boarding gate had already started its countdown. I'd barely put my ID to the scanner when Irene grabbed me by the wrist."Gavin, don't go." She held on tightly, her eyes rimmed red. "Come back with me."I looked at her and didn't move."Are you seriously advising me to go back with you?""Yes. Gavin, I'm seriously advising you to come back with me."I turned to the fourth page. "Please confirm it once more."Just then, her phone rang, and Zack's name popped up on the screen. The ticket inspector urged from the side, "Sir, you're the last passenger. Please board as soon as possible."I ignored him and repeated, "Please confirm it once more."Irene looked at me, then at her phone vibrating madly. In the end, she let go of my hand."Gavin, give me a second."I stood there watching her take the call."Calm down, Zack.
