Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
After the incident on the school forum, Fiona kept a low profile for a few days.

Mary went about her usual routine—school, home, meals—with a level of emotional composure that seemed far beyond her years.

The calmer she seemed, the less I dared to let my guard down.

One night, I went downstairs to get some water. As I passed by the living room, I noticed a desk lamp glowing in the corner.

Mary sat on the couch. The cold glow of her laptop illuminated her face. A pile of printed documents was spread out beside her.

I glanced over from a distance.

Those documents were some sort of old case.

Someone took the fall for someone else.

There was surveillance footage of an accident.

I instantly paused mid-stride.

Those words alone were enough to set off every alarm in my head.

Mary did not return to us simply to reconnect with her biological family.

She had an agenda.

I stayed where I was, motionless.

Mary looked up at me. “Is there something wrong?”

I immediately steadied the glass in my hand.

“Just getting some water.”

She closed her laptop quickly, but without the slightest hint of panic.

“Get some sleep.”

I nodded and headed upstairs, but my heart pounded increasingly fast.

What was she investigating?

Was she digging into some old business involving our family?

Was she looking into something our family had gotten involved with that they never should have touched?

Or were the people behind her using her return to us as an excuse to turn our family inside out and root out every problem?

The next day, I had Vincent look into everyone who had worked for us over the past ten years, including the drivers, butlers, former employees, as well as traffic accidents and compensation disputes.

Vincent looked confused. “Mr. Winsley, do you really want me to look into all of that?”

I gave him a cold look.

“Yes. It’s better to check everything.”

Three days later, he brought me a preliminary report.

It included a traffic accident from five years ago.

Our family driver, Arthur Strong, was drunk when he drove on the road. He hit and killed a young man. They convicted Arthur and sent him to prison.

Dad and the former butler, Robert Townsend, had handled the matter back then. They kept it as quiet as possible.

When I reached that part of the report, my brow slowly furrowed.

Around the same time, Fiona had coincidentally taken a trip abroad to “clear her head.” However, the details of the trip were vague, and the flight records did not line up.

At dinner, Dad brought up a birthday party.

“Fiona’s birthday is next week. It’ll be the perfect opportunity to officially introduce Mary to everyone in our social circle. I want both of you there.”

Fiona lowered her eyes and said softly, “Dad, you don’t have to throw a birthday party just for me. Mary just came home. Everyone’s bound to be more interested in her.”

Mom immediately felt sorry for her.

“What are you talking about? Of course, we’re celebrating your birthday.”

Dad nodded.

“The party is happening. Everyone should already know that we’ve found Mary. Nonetheless, you’re also our daughter.”

As soon as he said that, I noticed the faintest hint of a smile at the corner of Fiona’s mouth as she lowered her head.

She planned to make her move at the birthday party.

A public event with crowds, reporters, and plenty of guests was the perfect place to smear someone. Once the damage was done, even defending herself would make her look desperate.

I made arrangements ahead of time for tighter security. I had someone to screen the media guest list. Then, I backed up all the surveillance footage and had people keep an eye on Fiona’s friends.

The day before the birthday party, Fiona came to see me.

She stood at the study room door. Her eyes were reddened from tears.

“John, I know you care more about Mary. But I didn’t mean to hurt her with what happened on the forum. Please believe me, okay?”

Mary looked at Fiona.“I’m not satisfied.”Fiona froze.Mary said, “Once someone is dead, they don’t come back.”Right after the words landed, Fiona looked like all of her strength had been drained from her. She did not say another word.Outside the courthouse, Jane collapsed to her knees. She clutched the verdict and sobbed.Mary crouched beside her and gently patted her back.I stood nearby as I watched the winter sunlight fall across her shoulders. She was so thin, yet somehow, she looked strong enough to carry so much. When we got home, Dad locked himself in his study.Mom went to church.Mary did not go upstairs. Instead, she sat on a bench in the back garden with a can of cat food.A three-legged cat rubbed against her shoes while meowing.I walked over and sat down beside her.She did not look at me.“Can you tell me now?”I played dumb.“Tell you what?”“About the ridiculous thing you misunderstood about me.”I stayed silent for a full thirty seconds.Finall

I froze. The next moment, I came back to my senses. She did not mean that she did not know if our family was willing to pay for it.She was wondering if our family would once again use things like “how a girl should behave,” “what the family expects from you,” or “what’s best for the family’s reputation” to hold her back.I pulled out a chair and sat down.“What you want to study is up to you. Even if our family says no, I’m saying yes.”She looked at me, then she smiled. It was a faint smile. However, it was one of the few genuinely relaxed smiles I saw from her since she came home.“Does your approval actually count for anything?”I immediately said, “I still have some say at Winsley Group.”She nodded. Her expression was serious.“John, I’ll have to rely on you to look out for me, then.”When she called me by my name, it warmed my heart.I almost wanted to get her ten different law books on the spot.In order to make up for everything she had missed, I awkwardly learne

One page of the notebook was covered in a densely packed timeline. It held information about the accident that had happened five years ago, Arthur’s imprisonment, Peter’s mother being hospitalized, and Robert’s resignation. It also included the irregularities in Fiona’s overseas travel records. Each entry had a tiny mark beside it.Some of them read [Pending.]Others read [Verified.]She had crossed out one of the lines and rewrote it several times.[Don’t rush. Evidence is more useful than anger.]Suddenly, my throat felt tight. At 18 years old, I had learned management skills, taken riding lessons, and studied finance. As for Fiona, at 18 years old, she had planned her coming-of-age celebration, picked beautiful gowns, and acted cute. However, for Mary, at this age, she reminded herself not to rush. She reminded herself not to give in to anger. That was because she needed to find evidence.I put the notebook back exactly where I found it. I moved carefully and quietly.

“I know.”Mom cried even harder. The words did not mean forgiveness. They were simply stating a fact. You did not know, so you were biased. You did not know, so you protected her. Finally, you did not know, so I had no choice but to investigate everything myself all these years. The calmer Mary remained, the more Mom fell apart.I walked over to them. I wanted to say something, but every word felt inadequate.Mary looked at me.“I’m going to the police station.”I immediately straightened up. “I’ll drive you.”She looked at me for a few seconds.“Okay.”As we drove to the police station, Mary kept her eyes on the window. We were almost there when she asked, “Why weren’t you surprised at all tonight?”My fingers tightened around the steering wheel. There was no way I could tell her that I had spent all this time convinced she was some sort of mafia leader, and that I had expected to watch her take down everyone that night.I cleared my throat.“I trust you.”Mary tur

I turned to the first page. The page showed the license plates of the three black cars. Those vehicles were used for coordination purposes by the town’s relocation office. The so-called heavy vehicles with reinforced bodies had their undercarriages and suspension systems modified to handle the rough, potholed roads in the countryside. The man covered in scars and dressed in a suit was Mark Maddon. He was the director of Phyllis Orphanage. He sustained the scars on his face after being attacked by pigs as a child. It happened when he was feeding them back in his hometown. The contents of the brown paper bag consisted of the orphanage relocation compensation agreements, a list of children to be relocated, and copies of the compensation details. As I stared at those few lines, I gradually furrowed my brows.I continued to read.Mary had said, “Follow the usual rules.”Mary regularly helped to verify the government subsidies and the children’s relocation benefits for the orphanag

Mary finally looked at Fiona. Her gaze was cold.Yet it was not the same coldness I had seen at the orphanage that first day. This was the coldness of someone who had spent too long holding everything inside, waiting too long, and had finally laid the truth out in broad daylight. She raised her hand.Someone behind her handed her a document folder. It was not one of the men in black. It was the police. Two police officers stepped out from behind the crowd and flashed their badges.“Ms. Winsley, regarding the hit-and-run cover-up from five years ago on West City Road, we need you to come with us and assist with the investigation.”Fiona screamed and scrambled behind Mom.“Mom! Help me! I didn’t mean to! I swear I didn’t! I’d had too much to drink that night. I was just scared!”Mom stared at her. All the strength seemed to drain from her body.“So, it really was you?”Fiona sobbed so hard she could barely breathe.“I don’t want to go to prison! I was only 16 years old bac
