Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
“It doesn’t matter whether I trust in you or not.” I lowered my voice. “What matters most is that you don’t test Mary’s limits.

“She isn’t some sort of helpless country girl whom you think you can push around with no one backing her up.”

Fiona bit her lip as tears rolled down her cheeks.

“John, you make her sound terrifying.”

I thought to myself, ‘She really is terrifying.’

However, I kept that to myself.

“Just remember what I told you.”

The next afternoon, the birthday party began.

Fiona stood under the crystal chandeliers in an haute couture gown. She looked like a beautiful flower that had been carefully cultivated in a greenhouse from the day she was born.

Mary stood on the other side of the room in a long black dress. She pinned up her hair. She did not put on any jewelry. However, her cool, distant presence reminded me of a sheathed blade.

People glanced her way and whispered among themselves.

“So, that’s their biological daughter, huh?”

“She has a pretty good presence, but she’s awfully cold.”

“I heard she grew up in the countryside. Honestly, it’s impressive she turned out this well.”

I stood nearby with a glass of wine. My temples throbbed.

They had better pray that Mary hadn’t heard them.

Mary simply looked down at her phone.

She acted as though their whispers were nothing more than a passing breeze.

I, on the other hand, grew increasingly uneasy.

It was too quiet.

It was always this quiet right before the storm.

Halfway through the party, a commotion abruptly broke out at the side entrance to the ballroom.

Several unfamiliar men barged in.

The security guards moved in to stop them, but the man leading the group shoved one of the guards aside.

The bleached-blond leader pointed at Mary and shouted, “Mary Winsley, you think you can simply brush us off by hiding yourself among a rich family, huh?!

“When are you going to pay back the money you owe us from the countryside?”

Another man held up his phone. “Everyone, take a good look. The great Mary Winsley used to run with us, and now she’s pretending to be some sort of a rich young lady!”

A third man took out several printed screenshots of chat messages. “We know exactly what she was like back then!”

The guests erupted into an uproar.

Someone took a step back.

Others took out their phones and started recording.

Several cameras from the press section turned toward them as well.

Dad’s face turned livid.

Mom instinctively grabbed Fiona’s hand.

Fiona went pale as if she had been frightened, but she quickly stepped in front of Mom. Tears welled up in her eyes.

“Mary, if you’re in trouble, you can always tell the family. Why did you have to let these people come and cause a scene at my birthday party?”

With just one sentence, she pinned the entire mess on Mary.

Every alarm in my head went off at once.

This was not some ordinary disruption.

They deliberately dragged Mary’s “country connections” into a high-society banquet. They turned the scandal into a spectacle that would spread through the entire social circle within minutes.

These people wanted the guests to record everything, the media to run with the story, and the Winsley family to lose any chance of quietly burying the incident.

Once that happened, more and more people would start digging into Mary’s past.

If anyone uncovered the orphanage connection, the black cars, or the scar-faced man, things would spiral completely out of control.

That idiotic Fiona thought she was ruining Mary’s reputation.

She had no idea she might actually be sending the entire family straight into the line of fire.

I immediately ordered the security guards to clear the room.

However, Mary raised her hand and stopped me.

Her hand was perfectly steady.

It was so steady that my heart sank.

She was finally going to spring her trap.

Mary looked at Fiona.“I’m not satisfied.”Fiona froze.Mary said, “Once someone is dead, they don’t come back.”Right after the words landed, Fiona looked like all of her strength had been drained from her. She did not say another word.Outside the courthouse, Jane collapsed to her knees. She clutched the verdict and sobbed.Mary crouched beside her and gently patted her back.I stood nearby as I watched the winter sunlight fall across her shoulders. She was so thin, yet somehow, she looked strong enough to carry so much. When we got home, Dad locked himself in his study.Mom went to church.Mary did not go upstairs. Instead, she sat on a bench in the back garden with a can of cat food.A three-legged cat rubbed against her shoes while meowing.I walked over and sat down beside her.She did not look at me.“Can you tell me now?”I played dumb.“Tell you what?”“About the ridiculous thing you misunderstood about me.”I stayed silent for a full thirty seconds.Finall

I froze. The next moment, I came back to my senses. She did not mean that she did not know if our family was willing to pay for it.She was wondering if our family would once again use things like “how a girl should behave,” “what the family expects from you,” or “what’s best for the family’s reputation” to hold her back.I pulled out a chair and sat down.“What you want to study is up to you. Even if our family says no, I’m saying yes.”She looked at me, then she smiled. It was a faint smile. However, it was one of the few genuinely relaxed smiles I saw from her since she came home.“Does your approval actually count for anything?”I immediately said, “I still have some say at Winsley Group.”She nodded. Her expression was serious.“John, I’ll have to rely on you to look out for me, then.”When she called me by my name, it warmed my heart.I almost wanted to get her ten different law books on the spot.In order to make up for everything she had missed, I awkwardly learne

One page of the notebook was covered in a densely packed timeline. It held information about the accident that had happened five years ago, Arthur’s imprisonment, Peter’s mother being hospitalized, and Robert’s resignation. It also included the irregularities in Fiona’s overseas travel records. Each entry had a tiny mark beside it.Some of them read [Pending.]Others read [Verified.]She had crossed out one of the lines and rewrote it several times.[Don’t rush. Evidence is more useful than anger.]Suddenly, my throat felt tight. At 18 years old, I had learned management skills, taken riding lessons, and studied finance. As for Fiona, at 18 years old, she had planned her coming-of-age celebration, picked beautiful gowns, and acted cute. However, for Mary, at this age, she reminded herself not to rush. She reminded herself not to give in to anger. That was because she needed to find evidence.I put the notebook back exactly where I found it. I moved carefully and quietly.

“I know.”Mom cried even harder. The words did not mean forgiveness. They were simply stating a fact. You did not know, so you were biased. You did not know, so you protected her. Finally, you did not know, so I had no choice but to investigate everything myself all these years. The calmer Mary remained, the more Mom fell apart.I walked over to them. I wanted to say something, but every word felt inadequate.Mary looked at me.“I’m going to the police station.”I immediately straightened up. “I’ll drive you.”She looked at me for a few seconds.“Okay.”As we drove to the police station, Mary kept her eyes on the window. We were almost there when she asked, “Why weren’t you surprised at all tonight?”My fingers tightened around the steering wheel. There was no way I could tell her that I had spent all this time convinced she was some sort of mafia leader, and that I had expected to watch her take down everyone that night.I cleared my throat.“I trust you.”Mary tur

I turned to the first page. The page showed the license plates of the three black cars. Those vehicles were used for coordination purposes by the town’s relocation office. The so-called heavy vehicles with reinforced bodies had their undercarriages and suspension systems modified to handle the rough, potholed roads in the countryside. The man covered in scars and dressed in a suit was Mark Maddon. He was the director of Phyllis Orphanage. He sustained the scars on his face after being attacked by pigs as a child. It happened when he was feeding them back in his hometown. The contents of the brown paper bag consisted of the orphanage relocation compensation agreements, a list of children to be relocated, and copies of the compensation details. As I stared at those few lines, I gradually furrowed my brows.I continued to read.Mary had said, “Follow the usual rules.”Mary regularly helped to verify the government subsidies and the children’s relocation benefits for the orphanag

Mary finally looked at Fiona. Her gaze was cold.Yet it was not the same coldness I had seen at the orphanage that first day. This was the coldness of someone who had spent too long holding everything inside, waiting too long, and had finally laid the truth out in broad daylight. She raised her hand.Someone behind her handed her a document folder. It was not one of the men in black. It was the police. Two police officers stepped out from behind the crowd and flashed their badges.“Ms. Winsley, regarding the hit-and-run cover-up from five years ago on West City Road, we need you to come with us and assist with the investigation.”Fiona screamed and scrambled behind Mom.“Mom! Help me! I didn’t mean to! I swear I didn’t! I’d had too much to drink that night. I was just scared!”Mom stared at her. All the strength seemed to drain from her body.“So, it really was you?”Fiona sobbed so hard she could barely breathe.“I don’t want to go to prison! I was only 16 years old bac
