Chapter 3

Author: Nameless
"Have you seen the video, Cameron?" Kieran exclaimed. "It went viral! All the netizens are talking about you!"

His voice was colored with a mixture of excitement and curiosity when he continued, "But… Everyone has a terrible opinion of you now. Your father's image is too perfect… You have to give me an explanation, or I won't be able to continue."

"An explanation?" I asked calmly as if I was just talking about the weather.

"That's right! An explanation! Or just give me a reason that will help me understand why you're doing this."

Kieran paused for a moment before continuing in a hushed voice, "Everyone thinks that you're a lunatic—a demon who tortures his own father. They're going to utterly destroy your reputation if you don't say something."

I remained silent and listened to Kieran's anxious breathing. I knew that he needed a reason to convince himself to continue doing what I asked of him.

"Mr. Wilcox," I said. "Do you believe what you see? Or do you believe me?"

It was an unfair question.

Kieran hadn't even known me for 48 hours. On top of that, the evidence in the video seemed so conclusive and so touching to the point that it made one shed tears.

The silence on the other end of the line stretched on.

I didn't urge Kieran to answer and just quietly waited.

"I… I only believe in the truth," he finally answered in a dry voice, showing his final determination as a reporter.

"Very good," I said slowly. "Go to the recycling center in Westhill tomorrow and keep filming him."

Kieran sent an encrypted livestream link to me the next day at 3:00 pm.

I tapped on the link.

The footage was a little unstable, making it clear that Kieran was filming in secret.

The camera was aimed at the recycling center.

Dad crouched in the middle of a small mountain of discarded cardboard and plastic bottles. He moved skillfully as he used a small knife to cut the ropes that were tying the cardboard and bottles together, separating and flattening them.

His movements were swift, and the expression on his face suggested that he felt a sense of accomplishment for his hard work.

Comments flooded the livestream.

"Oh, my god. Mr. Locke really has it rough."

"He's the epitome of a great father. He's still collecting trash for his ungrateful son's sake."

"People like Cameron should just die!"

My face was devoid of emotion as I scrolled through the comments.

Dad finally finished sorting through the trash two hours later. He dragged a few heavy, woven bags toward the weighing scale.

The supervisor of the recycling center shot a disdainful look at him before spitting out, "37 dollars and 50 cents."

Dad carefully accepted the wrinkled bills and meticulously smoothed them out. He then slipped them into his pocket, treating them as if they were precious treasures.

Just then, a refined, young woman, who was carrying a backpack and wearing a pair of black-framed glasses, appeared. When she spotted Dad, her eyes lit up for a split second before dimming again. She fixed an embarrassed expression on her face before speaking slowly.

"Sir… I…"

"What's wrong, miss?" Dad asked gently. "Did you run into trouble?"

The young woman introduced herself as Quinn Jonas, a poor university student. She explained that her family was struggling financially. On top of that, her mother was severely ill. Although she had managed to get into a prestigious school, she didn't have enough money to even pay for a ticket to go home.

Her acting was terrible, and her eyes kept darting around guiltily. Her spotless sneakers completely contradicted the "poor student" image that she was trying to paint herself as.

Dad didn't hesitate for even a second upon hearing her words. His hands trembled as he pulled out the money that he had just gotten from his inner pocket. The bills and coins were still warm from his body heat. He also pulled out what little money he had left and pressed it into Quinn's hands.

"Take this, miss. I hope you don't mind that I don't have much money to begin with."

Tears welled up in Quinn's eyes out of "gratitude". She thanked him profusely.

Chaos erupted in the livestream. The screen was covered in a wall of praise.

"However, your son, Cameron Locke, filed a lawsuit against you ten times," the host said. "With the entire nation watching, do the two of you have anything to say to each other today?"Dad was wearing an old and faded coat—the same one that he had been wearing when Kieran filmed him. His eyes were slightly reddened, but the corners of his lips were curled up into a kind smile. He picked up the microphone. His voice was thick with tears when he said, "I don't blame you, Cam. No matter what you do, you'll always be my wonderful son."The livestream was filled with comments like, "He's a saint", "I'm crying", and "Where can I find a father like him?" in an instant. My heart was completely calm as I took in his masterful acting. The host offered a microphone to me, but I didn't take it. "Mom wrote about a certain detail on the last page of her diary," I said as I pointed at that particular sentence. "The truck has been parked at the intersection for a long time. It didn't look like it wanted to drive across. Instead, it looked like it was waiting for someone."Did you mention this detail in your case file all those years ago?"Yelena's fingers froze over her cup. She looked up, making eye contact with me for the first time from below her droopy eyelids. Her eyes shone with a scrutiny that was unique to police officers.A long time passed before she slowly said, "The driver… didn't mention this detail.""Would an exhausted driver have the energy to wait at an intersection for a long time?" Kieran asked immediately.Yelena didn't say a single word. She rose to her feet, told us to wait for her, and left the cafe.Kieran and I waited in the cafe for an hour. Our teas had gone cold.Just when I assumed that Yelena wasn't going to come back, she hurried into the caf

I found the locked box in the deepest compartment of the closet when I was sorting through Mom's belongings. With Kieran watching, I unlocked the box with a key, revealing an old diary inside."This is Mom's diary," I said, pushing it toward him. "You might be able to find the evidence that you're looking for in here."Kieran picked up the diary with a confused expression. He then carefully flipped through the yellowed pages.Although Mom just wrote about normal things that happened in her daily life in the first few pages, the stress that colored the words was palpable."March 5th. Scott said that the bank account book has gone missing and blames me for misplacing it. But I clearly remember giving it to him yesterday. Forget it. Maybe my memory is failing with age."April 12th. I wanted to call Cam, but Scott told me not to disturb him because he's busy with work. He's right. I shouldn't cause trouble for Cam."Kieran's frown deepened as he picked up the speed and flipped throu

Kieran and I agreed to meet at an old cafe that barely had any patrons.Kieran's face was covered in a layer of dust from his travels when he arrived. He didn't even bother ordering a drink for himself before pushing a recording device and a few printed photos toward me."I didn't listen to my editor-in-chief and kept following him," he said without beating around the bush, his eyes shining with fear. "As expected, your father, Scott Locke, is no simple trash collector."I didn't say a single word as I looked at him, waiting for him to continue.Kieran took a deep breath as if he was searching for the right words. "Your father is… the leader of a fraud empire beneath the piles of trash."He told me that after paying close attention to the video of the recycling center, he noticed that Quinn's act of a poor university student had been extremely deliberate. It was why he decided to approach the case from a different angle.Instead of just filming Dad, he decided to observe the recy

"I'm actually crying! This is what a real saint looks like!""He's willing to give all his money to a stranger and just eat scraps for his meals.""Take a look at your father, Cameron Locke! Doesn't your conscience ache at all?"The livestream server was nearly overwhelmed by the number of people who were flooding into Kieran's livestream.I turned off the livestream. Everything was proceeding as expected.Just then, my doorbell rang.A uniformed deliveryman offered an envelope to me when I opened the door, asking for my signature.Feeling confused, I signed for the document and closed the door. When I opened the thick document, I found a court summons inside.Plaintiff: Scott Locke.Defendant: Cameron Locke.Dad was filing a lawsuit against me for emotional abuse. On top of that, not only was he asking me to make a public apology, but he also planned to file a restraining order against me, preventing me from stepping within 330 feet of him.I nearly burst out laughing as I
