Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
Kieran fell silent. He was a smart reporter and immediately understood the value of this news. He would earn a handsome sum of money no matter whether he got footage of my so-called truth, or of Dad being a perfect father.

"How would I know that this isn't just another scheme that you cooked up to take revenge on your father?" he asked.

"You have no other choice," I said as I looked at him, smiling for the first time since the trial ended. "There's no better news for you to cover. I also won't give you a second chance."

I stopped entertaining him after I was done speaking, turning around and squeezing through the crowd.

The reporters continued to bombard me with questions and flashing lights behind me.

I knew that Kieran would agree to my request. He was just like me, after all. He was the type of person who wouldn't rest until he got what he wanted.

As expected, my phone vibrated not even five minutes after I slipped into a cab. I had received a message from an unknown number.

The message was short and simple.

"I'll do it."

Kieran was extremely efficient. His video went online the next day at 10:00 am. The title was very eye-catching: "A Great Father's 24 Hours".

No music had been added to the video. The only sounds came from the location's background noise.

The video opened with a shot of morning mist. Dad's back was hunched as he searched the area's trash bins for plastic bottles. He moved skillfully, stomping on the bottles until they were flattened before stuffing them into a huge woven bag behind him. It looked like he had been doing it for his entire life.

When the afternoon rolled around, he sat in a corner in a fast-food restaurant. There were no trays on his table.

When the young man who was sitting at the next table left, Dad immediately hurried over and grabbed the half-eaten burger and fries and stuffed them into his food container. He also gulped down the warm water that the restaurant provided for free.

The camera zoomed in on his face and gave him a close-up. His gaze was calm but satisfied, as if he was enjoying a delicacy.

The climax of the video happened late at night.

The scene took place in my living room. Mom's black-and-white portrait was placed on a shelf.

Dad knelt on the thin rug in front of the portrait. He didn't cry loudly and simply allowed his tears to silently stream down his face. His voice was barely above a whisper as he mumbled, "You have to watch over Cam, Luna. He has to stop being so stubborn.

"I understand that he's upset, but there's nothing that I can do. I don't blame him. I just want him to live a good life. I'm willing to do anything…"

The video got over a million views within an hour of being uploaded. My name also immediately shot up the trending topics chart.

"He's definitely the most ungrateful bastard of the year. No one's going to beat him."

"Where can you find a father like him? Is his son a beast? What gives him the right to file a lawsuit against his own father?"

"I was moved to tears. Mr. Locke's too amazing. His son should get on his knees and grovel for his forgiveness right now!"

"We should teach this ungrateful loser a lesson that he won't forget. Let's destroy his ability to ever show his face in public again!"

It didn't take long before my phone number, workplace, and home address were dug up and included in a photo with bright, red words. The photo was then pinned at the top of the comments section.

My phone exploded with notifications. I was bombarded with endless calls from unknown numbers. Whenever I picked up any of the calls, the other party would either furiously shout at me at the top of their lungs or curse me out.

I disconnected my home's landline and set my phone on silent mode. However, it was no use. My phone continued to chime nonstop with message notifications, causing the screen to flash endlessly.

My boss used the company's landline to call me. He sounded troubled and distant when he asked me to apply for leave of my own volition to avoid affecting the company's reputation.

My gossiping colleagues, who used to share their snacks with me in the company every day, also set their statuses to "do not disturb".

I became public enemy number one overnight.

I calmly pulled out my phone and dialed Kieran's number.

"However, your son, Cameron Locke, filed a lawsuit against you ten times," the host said. "With the entire nation watching, do the two of you have anything to say to each other today?"Dad was wearing an old and faded coat—the same one that he had been wearing when Kieran filmed him. His eyes were slightly reddened, but the corners of his lips were curled up into a kind smile. He picked up the microphone. His voice was thick with tears when he said, "I don't blame you, Cam. I know… I know that you've just been temporarily led astray. No matter what you do, you'll always be my wonderful son."The livestream was filled with comments like, "He's a saint", "I'm crying", and "Where can I find a father like him?" in an instant. My heart was completely calm as I took in his masterful acting. The host offered a microphone to me, but I didn't take it. Instead, I looked at Kieran, who was sitting among the audience.Kieran nodded before he rose to his feet. He called out to the host and sa

"Mom wrote about a certain detail on the last page of her diary," I said as I pointed at that particular sentence. "The truck has been parked at the intersection for a long time. It didn't look like it wanted to drive across. Instead, it looked like it was waiting for someone."Did you mention this detail in your case file all those years ago?"Yelena's fingers froze over her cup. She looked up, making eye contact with me for the first time from below her droopy eyelids. Her eyes shone with a scrutiny that was unique to police officers.A long time passed before she slowly said, "The driver… didn't mention this detail.""Would an exhausted driver have the energy to wait at an intersection for a long time?" Kieran asked immediately.Yelena didn't say a single word. She rose to her feet, told us to wait for her, and left the cafe.Kieran and I waited in the cafe for an hour. Our teas had gone cold.Just when I assumed that Yelena wasn't going to come back, she hurried into the caf

I found the locked box in the deepest compartment of the closet when I was sorting through Mom's belongings. With Kieran watching, I unlocked the box with a key, revealing an old diary inside."This is Mom's diary," I said, pushing it toward him. "You might be able to find the evidence that you're looking for in here."Kieran picked up the diary with a confused expression. He then carefully flipped through the yellowed pages.Although Mom just wrote about normal things that happened in her daily life in the first few pages, the stress that colored the words was palpable."March 5th. Scott said that the bank account book has gone missing and blames me for misplacing it. But I clearly remember giving it to him yesterday. Forget it. Maybe my memory is failing with age."April 12th. I wanted to call Cam, but Scott told me not to disturb him because he's busy with work. He's right. I shouldn't cause trouble for Cam."Kieran's frown deepened as he picked up the speed and flipped throu

Kieran and I agreed to meet at an old cafe that barely had any patrons.Kieran's face was covered in a layer of dust from his travels when he arrived. He didn't even bother ordering a drink for himself before pushing a recording device and a few printed photos toward me."I didn't listen to my editor-in-chief and kept following him," he said without beating around the bush, his eyes shining with fear. "As expected, your father, Scott Locke, is no simple trash collector."I didn't say a single word as I looked at him, waiting for him to continue.Kieran took a deep breath as if he was searching for the right words. "Your father is… the leader of a fraud empire beneath the piles of trash."He told me that after paying close attention to the video of the recycling center, he noticed that Quinn's act of a poor university student had been extremely deliberate. It was why he decided to approach the case from a different angle.Instead of just filming Dad, he decided to observe the recy

"I'm actually crying! This is what a real saint looks like!""He's willing to give all his money to a stranger and just eat scraps for his meals.""Take a look at your father, Cameron Locke! Doesn't your conscience ache at all?"The livestream server was nearly overwhelmed by the number of people who were flooding into Kieran's livestream.I turned off the livestream. Everything was proceeding as expected.Just then, my doorbell rang.A uniformed deliveryman offered an envelope to me when I opened the door, asking for my signature.Feeling confused, I signed for the document and closed the door. When I opened the thick document, I found a court summons inside.Plaintiff: Scott Locke.Defendant: Cameron Locke.Dad was filing a lawsuit against me for emotional abuse. On top of that, not only was he asking me to make a public apology, but he also planned to file a restraining order against me, preventing me from stepping within 330 feet of him.I nearly burst out laughing as I
