I took my sister’s place to save my family. Now I am living a life that could destroy me. I never wanted anything to do with the mafia. But when my twin sister vanished without a word, I stepped into her world and became her… the wife of Rowan, a man people fear and never question. Every day, I live a lie. His son, Dante, looks at me like I am his mother, and something inside me breaks every time he says in a low voice that l look like his mom. But not everyone is fooled. Rowan’s family watches me too closely. They see what does not belong and they are waiting for me to slip so they can get rid of me for good. I tell myself I can handle it. That I just need to survive long enough to protect the people I love. But I am losing control. Because the man I was never meant to love is starting to look at me differently. And the worst part is… I think I am falling for him too.

Chapter 1

I have no choice. I will become her.

Zella

I knew something was wrong the second I heard my mother’s voice trembling on the phone.

“Zella… come home. Now.”

The call ended before I could ask a single question. For a few seconds, I stood there in my apartment, staring at my phone like it could explain what was happening. Something felt off, and I could not shake it. My parents have never called me back like this and not once.

I grabbed my bag and left immediately. My thoughts kept running in circles, trying to make sense of the whole thing. When I finally stepped into the house, I knew. Something had already gone wrong.

No one greeted me. No one moved. The silence sat on everyone's face. My father stood by the window, quiet in a way that made my heart raced. My mother sat on the couch, her face pale, her eyes red from crying and then I saw him.

Uncle Silas.

The moment our eyes met, something inside me dropped. He did not look angry. He looked worn out, like a man who had reached the end of his options. That scared me more than I wanted to admit. I moved closer to my mother and held her arm, trying to calm her, but she felt weak under my touch.

“What is going on?” I asked.

No one answered. That silence said enough. Something was wrong. Something serious. Then my mother broke.

“Zaria is gone,” she said, her voice breaking apart. “She is missing.”

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

“Missing?” I repeated.

No one corrected me. My mind lagged behind the words, like it refused to accept them. Zaria… gone?

My twin.

We look exactly the same, but we have never lived the same life. I grew up with my parents, while she was taken in by Uncle Silas when we were still children. We only met a few times over the years. From the way she treated me, I always knew she did not like me. Maybe I reminded her of something she did not want to face. Still… she is my sister.

“What do you mean missing?” I asked again.

“She disappeared without telling anyone,” my father said quietly. “No calls. No message. Nothing.”

The room went quiet again, but this time it pressed in on me. I looked between them, trying to understand why this felt bigger than just someone going missing. Then it clicked.

Zaria is not just anyone. She is a well known model. She is married into the Cristopher family, one of the most powerful families in this country. To the public, she is Uncle Silas’s only daughter. No one knows I exist. No one knows she has a twin.

If people find out she has disappeared… everything could collapse. Before I could say anything else, Uncle Silas spoke.

“Steven,” he said, looking straight at my father. “Do not forget the promise you made.”

I frowned, confused.

“What promise?” my father asked, his voice tight.

“You chose to marry Arielle,” Uncle Silas continued. “The woman who was sent to kill me. I let her live because you begged me to. You promised that whenever I ask for your lives, you would give them to me.”

This was a new and strange revelation to me as I looked at my father. I did not understand what they were talking about, but I knew it was something serious. Something from a past they never told me about.

“What do you want?” my father asked. Uncle Silas did not hesitate.

“I want Zella to take Zaria’s place.”

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

“What?”

The word left my mouth at once. My mother suddenly stood, then dropped to her knees in front of him. That shocked me more than anything else.

“Please,” she cried. “Do not do this. Do not take her too.”

I rushed forward and grabbed her arm, trying to pull her up, but she pushed my hand away.

“Just kill me instead,” she said through her tears. “I will not let you destroy my child’s life again.”

“Destroy?” Uncle Silas let out a bitter laugh. “Everything was already ruined the moment you exposed this family’s secrets.”

“Enough, Silas!” my father shouted.

“You are the reason we are here,” Uncle Silas snapped back. “If you had not walked away from that world, none of this would have happened. Because of your choices, we lost the man who raised us. Now everything we built is about to collapse, and we will all die with it.”

Before I could process his words, my father suddenly pulled a gun from his waist and pointed it at his own head.

“Papa!” I screamed. “Do not do this. Please. If you pull that trigger, I will follow you. I mean it.”

That made him stop. Slowly, his hand dropped.

“There is no other way,” Uncle Silas said. “Zella must replace Zaria and return to Rowan.”

A cold feeling spread through my body.

“What are you talking about?” my father asked, his voice filled with anger.

“Zaria has been gone for two months,” Uncle Silas said. “She left behind a four year old boy. Rowan’ son has not stopped crying for his mother. Dante is your grandson. The only male heir.”

The words did not sit right in my head.

“If Rowan finds out Zaria left him,” Uncle Silas continued, “we will all pay for it.”

My father shook his head. “You are insane. You want Zella to live with that man? That monster? Is it not enough that Zaria has already suffered?”

“Zaria chose that life,” Uncle Silas said. “She forced Rowan to marry her. You know what kind of man he is. He can kill anyone without consequences. Entire families have been destroyed for less.”

My mother sobbed beside me. “Then why Zella? Why my daughter? This is not her mistake.”

“I made a mistake,” Uncle Silas said quietly. “I gave Zaria everything she wanted.”

He paused before speaking again.

“Rowan gave me three days. If I do not bring Zaria back, our company will fall. Thousands will lose their jobs. And he will kill me for making his son cry.”

My heart pounded. My father stepped forward. “That is not our problem. I will not let Zella take her place. She deserves her own life.”

Uncle Silas looked at us, his expression dark.

“Then you will all be buried with me.”

Those words stayed in everyone's head, like there was no way out of them. I closed my eyes for a second. My heart felt heavy, but my mind was clear.

When I opened them again, I looked straight at him.

“Uncle,” I said. “I will do it.”

“No,” my mother cried.

“I will take Zaria’s place.”

My mother shook her head, tears falling faster. “Do not say that. Please do not say that.”

I held her hands tightly. “I love you and Papa. I can not let anything happen to you.”

My voice did not shake, even though everything inside me felt like it was falling apart.

“I will do this until Zaria comes back.”

My mother broke down completely. My father pulled me into his arms, holding me tightly like he was afraid I would disappear too. I do not know if this is the right decision. But I know one thing. I can not stand by and watch my family disappear or imagine it. They are everything to me.

No matter what happens next, I will face it. I only hope Zaria comes back soon, so I can return to the life that was taken from me. Until then… I have no choice. I will become her.
