LOGINThe Lycan King's summons reached all fifty-six packs across the Northern Territories — he was choosing a Luna for his heir. The heir's reputation for brutality preceded him. So my mother swapped my sister Freya's name for mine. Her voice left no room for argument. "Elsa, your sister's wolf spirit hasn't fully awakened yet. She can't survive the journey. Go in her place — enter the Luna Trials for her." She gripped my hand, tears sliding down her cheeks at just the right moment. "When it's over, your brother will come for you. I swear it on the Moon Goddess." In my past life, I believed that oath. I traveled to the Lycan King's fortress, only to be singled out by the heir himself. I barely escaped his stronghold alive, fleeing through blizzards for seven days and nights before I finally lost my pursuers. After two years as a rogue, I made it back to the Frostfang Pack — just in time to witness Freya's Marking Ceremony with the Alpha. My mother stood at the center of the celebration and looked straight through me. "Rogue. There is no place for you here." Cast out a second time, I lost all hope. I died in a blizzard, alone. When consciousness returned, I found myself standing in the stone hall again. She wore the same expression, watching me with those calculating eyes. "Elsa, would you take Freya's place in the Luna Trials?"
View MoreThe atmosphere was very tense and silent. Nobody spoke since the dinner had started. The soft beat of the rain against the roof of the house didn’t seem to help matters. The only sound was the sound of the spoon meeting the plates and the heavy breathing of the occupants of the table. Camila looked around the table, wandering what was wrong. She looked at her eldest brother Ace, his dark hair and eyes seemed than usual and he had a scowl on his face but he always had a scowl on his face, Diego sat beside him with short hair and blue eyes, he looked sad and annoyed and his twin Xavier shared the exact look. Matias just looked bored out of his mind and slightly worried.
“is something wrong?” her mother asked in a distraught voice which finally broke the silence which hung over the family table for so long. Ace seemed happy at this development because finally he could speak since someone had spoken.
“yes papa, please tell them what is wrong?” he hissed at his father who raised an eyebrow and dropped the glass of wine he was holding.
“well, it has been decided that the engagement ceremony of Camila and Roman will be tomorrow” there was pin drop silence in the room. Camila’s heart dropped to the ground. She couldn’t believe it. They were giving her to someone she’d never met and of all people, Roman Romero.
“Leonardo, how come I wasn’t told about this?” her mother argued in a sad tone.
“I wanted it to be a surprise”
“surprise my foot, she’s only 19 years” Diego spat out gesturing to Camila who was still shocked. “she hasn’t even finished school yet”
“as much as I hate this, this is no way to speak to your father” her mother said in a warning tone.
“she can still school” her father said annoyed with his sons’ bickering. “we are not going to cancel the engagement and it is final” he slammed his fist on the table and everybody went silent. “Camila?” he turned to face his daughter but she was long gone. They all stared at the chair in silence unsure of what to do. Ace stood up alongside Diego and the rest of his brothers.
“search around the house for her” he ordered and they scurried off. He gave his father a stink eye before walking silently out of the room.
Camila walked down the dirt road, her hands held firmly around her body to try and keep warm. The weather was chilly though the rain had stopped and she had nothing on but the thin silk frock she’d worn for dinner. Dinner was a disaster. She never thought this would happen in a million years. That they’ll give her to some random guy.
She stopped when she came to the stream. The sound of the water seemed to have a calming effect on her. It helped relax her mind whenever she needed it. She sat on her favorite rock and started to throe pebbles into the river.
“you could get a cold, you know” Ace’s voice rang through the air. She turned swiftly to face her brother. He stepped forward and sat on the rock beside her. He placed his jacket over her cold body “I’m sorry, I tried but papa can be stubborn at times” Ace said with a sigh.
“it’s so stupid” Camila said with a sniffle.
“but it doesn’t mean you are getting married yet” she nodded and leaned on her brother’s shoulder. Her eyes were closing.
“sleep ti amore” Ace murmured.
After receiving the medicine, my mother left with Freya and Noah.I heard that Freya's wolf spirit stabilized, but it would remain permanently at its initial awakening stage. She would never be able to shift. She couldn't even resonate with other wolves under the full moon.In the world of werewolves, she had become something broken.Noah married the daughter of a minor pack's Alpha. The girl was said to be sharp-tongued, often berating him in public for being useless. As for my mother — she barely left the house anymore. She spent her days in a bare stone cottage, polishing and repolishing the few keepsakes Father had left behind.Someone overheard her talking to herself at night, sometimes calling Father's name, sometimes mine."She's living with regret."Jacob said this as we were surveying newly claimed territory in the north.I didn't respond. I only looked out toward the endless chain of snow-capped mountains. As Luna, my days were consumed with endless affairs. But in whatever t
"Elsa — wait!"She had come alone. Gone was the composure she'd forced in front of the crowd. She looked old and exhausted."Can I speak with you? Just the two of us?"Jacob glanced at me. I nodded, and he withdrew with the guards to the far end of the corridor. Her eyes were red. She dropped to her knees before me.I had never seen her like this. She looked up, her face streaked with tears — wretched and aged."Elsa. I was wrong."I watched her in silence."I can't sleep anymore. The moment I close my eyes, I see your face."She choked on sobs, reaching for my knee but stopping midair. She covered her face, her shoulders shaking violently."Freya's illness keeps getting worse. Noah went into the mountains to find medicine for her and damaged his own wolf spirit in the process."She lifted her head. Her eyes were threaded with red."So now you regret it."I finally spoke. She shuffled forward on her knees, trembling hands outstretched."Elsa, I know I have no right to ask anything of y
On the day of the Summit, Alphas from all fifty-six northern packs gathered at the Lycan King's fortress. When we entered the stone hall, a wave of whispers rose and fell like a tide.Countless eyes settled on me — probing, appraising. This was Jacob's first official appearance since ascending to the Lycan King throne. He held my hand as we walked to the high seat reserved for the Luna beside the Lycan King's throne. As we passed the Frostfang Pack's section, I let my gaze sweep over them, calm and measured. My mother sat there, pale and gaunt.Noah was beside her, and next to him, Freya, her head bowed.Freya wore an extravagant gown that was clearly the wrong size — as if desperately trying to prove something. The Summit began. Each pack reported on their territorial affairs in turn. When the Frostfang Pack's turn came, my mother rose. Her voice was hoarse."The Frostfang Pack's hunting yield decreased by thirty percent this winter."An Alpha from a neighboring pack let out a mocking
The property transfer was completed before dawn.I took full control of the mines, the hunting grounds, and everything else Father had left behind.Including the wolf-fang bow that Noah had hidden away. The name carved into its spine wasn't just Elsa. There was also an ancient symbol. The Elders said it was the sigil of the Silver Moon Pack — a clan long destroyed.I ran my fingers along the bow's spine.Jacob stood beside me, gazing at the sunrise."One of the oldest packs in the Northern Territories. They were masters of runes and prophecy. Twenty years ago, a traitor sold them out. Several packs joined forces to annihilate them. The entire bloodline was wiped out."He glanced at me, something almost pitying in his voice."You are the last of their line.""You already knew?""I suspected it when you cracked those runes during the Trials. I looked into it afterward to confirm."He brought me to the Archive Tower in the Lycan King's fortress. There, I found the history of the Silver Mo
