Chapter 2

Yumi
This time, armed with memories from my past life, I cleared the Luna Trials unscathed.

It was nearly dusk when I returned to the Frostfang Pack from the Northern Territories.

I went back to my room.

Before I even stepped inside, I heard voices within.

Freya's tone was soft, threaded with just the right amount of concern.

"Mother, I've been using Elsa's room. What if she suddenly comes back?"

My mother's voice was warm — nothing like the edge she used with me.

"Don't worry. Jacob is vicious by nature, and the Luna Trials are brutal. No one who enters comes back alive."

A pause.

"Besides, you can't compare yourself to her. You're going to be an Alpha's mate."

Freya laughed, pleased.

"That's what Noah said too. He even helped me pick out a gown for the Marking Ceremony."

Noah chimed in, preening:

"My sister deserves the finest robe."

My mother laughed.

"Of course he dotes on you."

I stood outside the door, my fingertips going cold.

I'd overheard conversations like this in my last life too.

Back then, I'd made excuses for them.

Even after being reborn, I still couldn't understand it.

We shared the same mother. Why was her treatment of Freya and me so vastly different?

Before I could dwell on it further, I heard the rustle of fabric inside.

Her voice, gentle:

"I saved this frost-fox pelt just for you. It was your father's — meant for Elsa. But since she's gone to the Northern Territories, no sense wasting such fine things."

Freya's voice lilted with delight.

"You're so good to me, Mother."

I lowered my eyes and knocked on the door.

A beat of silence.

When my mother saw me, her composure cracked.

"You're back?"

"Was I not supposed to be?"

Noah cut in first, his tone impatient, ushering me away as if hiding something.

"This is Freya's room now. Mother set up a new room for you — on the southwest side of the pack. Just go and rest."

The southwest corner. The dampest, darkest part of the entire pack.

I smiled thinly.

"I've been gone for a few days and you've already taken over my room. It would be stranger if I didn't come see for myself."

Her expression darkened. She lowered her voice to a hiss.

"Stop making a scene. We're only borrowing your things. You're back in one piece — why fuss over this?"

"Borrowing? Father left me the only frost-fox pelt in the entire pack. How exactly does she plan to return it?"

Freya stepped forward then, wearing her signature look — wounded yet understanding.

"Please don't be upset. I didn't know these were yours. I just thought, since you'd already been through the Luna Trials, you might leave the pack someday. Keeping these things with me seemed... practical."

Noah jumped in at once.

"She's right. You're going to end up with Jacob anyway — having treasures like these would be wasted on you."

I looked at him.

"So you all decided for me?"

My mother's voice hardened.

"Enough. You're clearly not yourself tonight. Go rest."

I nodded, choosing not to argue further.

"Since my room is no longer mine, I'll be reclaiming full control of Father's northern mines and all my personal property before I leave for the Lycan King's territory."

Her face drained of color.

"What are you doing?!"

I paused at the door and looked back.

"Mother seems so certain I'll die out there. What's wrong with getting my affairs in order?"

Noah scoffed.

"You really do see yourself as an outsider."

"You made me one first."

I held their gazes, calm and steady.

Freya stood bathed in light. I stood in shadow.

The scene was an exact mirror of my past life.

The fury and injustice nearly consumed me.

This time, I would never make the same mistakes.

After receiving the medicine, my mother left with Freya and Noah.I heard that Freya's wolf spirit stabilized, but it would remain permanently at its initial awakening stage. She would never be able to shift. She couldn't even resonate with other wolves under the full moon.In the world of werewolves, she had become something broken.Noah married the daughter of a minor pack's Alpha. The girl was said to be sharp-tongued, often berating him in public for being useless. As for my mother — she barely left the house anymore. She spent her days in a bare stone cottage, polishing and repolishing the few keepsakes Father had left behind.Someone overheard her talking to herself at night, sometimes calling Father's name, sometimes mine."She's living with regret."Jacob said this as we were surveying newly claimed territory in the north.I didn't respond. I only looked out toward the endless chain of snow-capped mountains. As Luna, my days were consumed with endless affairs. But in whatever t

"Elsa — wait!"She had come alone. Gone was the composure she'd forced in front of the crowd. She looked old and exhausted."Can I speak with you? Just the two of us?"Jacob glanced at me. I nodded, and he withdrew with the guards to the far end of the corridor. Her eyes were red. She dropped to her knees before me.I had never seen her like this. She looked up, her face streaked with tears — wretched and aged."Elsa. I was wrong."I watched her in silence."I can't sleep anymore. The moment I close my eyes, I see your face."She choked on sobs, reaching for my knee but stopping midair. She covered her face, her shoulders shaking violently."Freya's illness keeps getting worse. Noah went into the mountains to find medicine for her and damaged his own wolf spirit in the process."She lifted her head. Her eyes were threaded with red."So now you regret it."I finally spoke. She shuffled forward on her knees, trembling hands outstretched."Elsa, I know I have no right to ask anything of y

On the day of the Summit, Alphas from all fifty-six northern packs gathered at the Lycan King's fortress. When we entered the stone hall, a wave of whispers rose and fell like a tide.Countless eyes settled on me — probing, appraising. This was Jacob's first official appearance since ascending to the Lycan King throne. He held my hand as we walked to the high seat reserved for the Luna beside the Lycan King's throne. As we passed the Frostfang Pack's section, I let my gaze sweep over them, calm and measured. My mother sat there, pale and gaunt.Noah was beside her, and next to him, Freya, her head bowed.Freya wore an extravagant gown that was clearly the wrong size — as if desperately trying to prove something. The Summit began. Each pack reported on their territorial affairs in turn. When the Frostfang Pack's turn came, my mother rose. Her voice was hoarse."The Frostfang Pack's hunting yield decreased by thirty percent this winter."An Alpha from a neighboring pack let out a mocking

The property transfer was completed before dawn.I took full control of the mines, the hunting grounds, and everything else Father had left behind.Including the wolf-fang bow that Noah had hidden away. The name carved into its spine wasn't just Elsa. There was also an ancient symbol. The Elders said it was the sigil of the Silver Moon Pack — a clan long destroyed.I ran my fingers along the bow's spine.Jacob stood beside me, gazing at the sunrise."One of the oldest packs in the Northern Territories. They were masters of runes and prophecy. Twenty years ago, a traitor sold them out. Several packs joined forces to annihilate them. The entire bloodline was wiped out."He glanced at me, something almost pitying in his voice."You are the last of their line.""You already knew?""I suspected it when you cracked those runes during the Trials. I looked into it afterward to confirm."He brought me to the Archive Tower in the Lycan King's fortress. There, I found the history of the Silver Mo

Jacob didn't take me back to the northern fortress. Instead, he walked into the Frostfang Pack's council hall.He strode to the head seat and sat down as though he owned the place.Within minutes, my mother and the pack Elders were brought in.They looked terrified — especially her. She couldn't bring herself to meet my eyes.Jacob rested his chin on one hand, his tone lazy."The Frostfang Pack's mines and hunting grounds — whose name are they under?"One of the Elders answered, voice shaking."Your Highness, most are under Elsa's mother. A few are managed by Noah and Freya.""And Elsa?"The Elder fell silent.Jacob smiled."So Elsa has nothing?"My mother rushed to speak."Your Highness, I was only holding them temporarily. Once she came of age and took a mate, naturally —""I want them now."I cut her off.She shot me a warning glare.I didn't flinch."Father's will was explicit — the mines and three hunting grounds belong to Elsa. The voice cut through the night like a blade — and sealed her throat shut.I didn't need to turn around to know who it was.Jacob. The Lycan King's heir.My mother's face went white. In an instant she donned a mask of terrified deference, pulling Freya down with her into a curtsy."Your — Your Highness, what brings you here?"Jacob ignored every person kneeling before him. His gaze landed squarely on me."So you're the little she-wolf who walked out of my Trials without a scratch?"I met his eyes."I am."He stopped in front of me, the corner of his mouth curving into something sharp."Every other contestant came out broken — physically or mentally. You're the only one who not only survived intact but finished three days ahead of schedule."My mother's head snapped up, disbelief flooding her face."That's — that's impossible —"Jacob spared her a glance, his voice dripping contempt."It seems your mother has no idea what you're capable of."I said nothing. In my past life, I'd followed
