Chapter 3

作者: September Almond
The door of the emergency room swung open. Gretchen stormed in with a hardened expression. "Dustin Wright, you disgust me. I can't believe you'd stoop so low just to extort more money from me!"

I parted my lips, but I couldn't find my voice.

"Cancel the transfer," she ordered coldly. "Hold his hand down and force him to sign the confession!"

Dwight rushed forward, forcibly pried open my hand, and pressed my thumb onto the document.

"That's enough. Throw him out!" Gretchen pulled out a wet wipe and wiped her hands in disgust. "Don't dirty the hospital floor."

I was tossed out of the hospital entrance like a piece of trash. Without the 500 thousand dollars, my only option was to work at an illegal construction site.

I spent two whole days hauling bags of cement. Yet, when it came time to collect my pay, the foreman kicked me out the door. "Get lost! You're practically on your deathbed, and you still expect to get paid? Don't dirty our site!"

I fell into a mud pit, and I was too weak to even push myself back up.

Right then, a familiar Porsche pulled up to the curb. The car window rolled down, revealing Gretchen, who was wearing a pair of sunglasses. She gazed at me coldly.

Dwight sat in the passenger seat and cocked his brow. "Are you getting a taste of the real world, Dustin?"

Gretchen hurled 200-dollar bills at my face. "Dustin, you just love playing the victim, don't you? Take this and scram!"

I didn't pick them up. I used the wall to pull myself up and drag my battered body into the dark alley. My retreating figure was resolute, without a trace of hesitation or regret.

Gretchen watched me disappear into the distance and felt an inexplicable pang in her chest. She shook her head, suppressing that strange feeling.

"Ignore him, Greta. Let's go wine and dine!"

Gretchen started the engine, rattled and frustrated.

That night, the internet blew up as uncensored surveillance footage was anonymously uploaded online. The footage clearly showed that it was Dwight who had forcefully dragged a nurse along to film a short video, causing the patient to hemorrhage and miss the golden window for resuscitation.

The topic "Privileged Intern Shows Utter Disregard for Human Life" rocketed to the top of the trending list.

Dwight panicked. He immediately posted a lengthy statement on social media, sniveling and saying that I, the lead surgeon, had framed him. He claimed I was jealous of him and had deliberately sabotaged the medical equipment.

He even pretended he was going to turn himself in to the cops. "I can't drag you down with me, Greta. I'll just go to prison."

Gretchen's heart went out to him. She immediately mobilized all her public relations resources to forcefully suppress the trending topic.

Then, she dialed my number, intending to demand an explanation for why I had been scheming against her behind her back. "The number you have dialed is no longer in service." Gretchen froze.

She sped straight to my rented room, only to find it completely deserted. "Very well, Dustin Wright!" she gritted out. "Do you think you'll be fine just because you hid away?"

Gretchen logged into the hospital's official account and, identifying herself as my wife, posted a statement along with a photograph of that confession bearing my bloody fingerprint.

"All medical malpractice was caused solely by former lead surgeon Dustin Wright's illegal operations. Dustin has a long-standing grudge against Dr. Reed. He maliciously edited the footage to frame him. I have chosen to uphold justice even against my own family and have reported him to the cops."

The moment her statement was released, the entire internet launched a manhunt for me, the "doctor who killed his patient".

One day, after work, Gretchen had just pulled open her car door when a patient's family member raised a brick and hurled it at her. Dwight was so terrified that he ducked behind her, whereas she squeezed her eyes shut.

The expected blow never landed because a security guard had blocked it. Gretchen opened her eyes and stared at the empty space beside her. All of a sudden, she fell into a daze.

In the past, whenever something like this happened, I would always rush out, shielding her tightly in my arms.

Even when I was left bruised and bleeding from the blow to my head, I would still smile and comfort her, saying, "Don't be afraid."

The stark contrast made her chest feel stuffy.

Meanwhile, Dwight's fate was even worse than Gretchen's in the intensive care unit of the prison's affiliated hospital. Quadriplegia robbed him of all control over his body. He was incontinent, and foul-smelling bedsores covered his entire body. As his bank accounts had been frozen, he couldn't afford a good caregiver. The person assigned to look after him was a burly, hot-tempered man. "Damn it, you shat yourself again! Why don't you just drop dead, you useless piece of shit?" The caregiver slapped Dwight across the face, knocking out one of his teeth. Tears streamed down Dwight's face from the pain, yet he didn't even have the strength to turn his head. All he could do was watch helplessly as the caregiver roughly wiped his ulcerated skin with a coarse towel. Every single touch felt like the slow agony of a thousand cuts. He wanted to die, yet he didn't even possess the strength to bite his own tongue. All he could do was lie there in endless agony, fully conscious as his bod

Four burly female inmates with intimidating faces sat on the bunk inside the prison cell, coldly sizing up the new heiress. Gretchen, however, acted as though she didn't notice anything around her. She clutched the cracked urn tightly against her chest. It was the only thing she had desperately begged her lawyer to bring in for her before she was sent to prison. "Hey, newbie!" The cell's female leader rose to her feet and walked up to Gretchen. She abruptly reached out and snatched the urn from Gretchen's arms. "What the hell is this piece of trash? Throw it away!""No!" Gretchen let out a piercing scream. Like an enraged lioness, she pounced on the woman and sank her teeth into her arm."What are you, a dog?" the woman shrieked before kicking Gretchen to the floor. The other three inmates immediately surrounded her, raining punches and kicks on Gretchen as she lay on the floor. "Let's beat her to a pulp and show this bitch who's boss!" Gretchen didn't fight back, nor did

Dwight's outburst echoed through the hospital room like a sharp spike, brutally tearing away the last shred of Gretchen's dignity. "Shut your trap!" Her eyes dilated instantly, and her hand, which was clutching the knife, trembled uncontrollably. "You're lying! I love him! Why would I ever be jealous of him?"His features contorted, yet he cackled. "You love him? If you loved him, why would you make him take the fall for me? If you loved him, why would you abandon him time and again to go on dates with me? "You knew damn well he was being beaten to a pulp in the prison every single day, living a life worse than death, but what did you do? Absolutely nothing! He was sentenced to three years, yet you didn't even visit him once, did you? You threw every single letter he wrote to you in the trash!" Gretchen blanched, shaking her head frantically. "No, I didn't. I didn't know… It was all your doing. It was all you!"Dwight wheezed. "I did it, but you allowed it, didn't you? Ms. Payn

Gretchen slowly turned her head and stared at the face she had once thought was pure and flawless. However, all she could see in her mind was the vicious look on Dwight's face in the footage as he crushed the medication that could keep me alive. The cops had already surrounded them. When she remained silent, he completely dropped the act to save his own skin. He jabbed his finger at her nose and bellowed, "Gretchen Payne, you're freaking useless; you can't even get rid of a dead man. Hurry up and use your money to get us off the trending topics! Aren't you the director of a hospital?"As soon as his words fell, a crisp, sharp crack echoed through the air. Gretchen put all her strength into it and slapped Dwight hard across the face. The blow spun him halfway around before he crashed hard onto the concrete floor, which was littered with shards of glass. Dwight shrieked as his palm landed on the shattered glass. Blood oozed from the wound. Gretchen lifted her foot and planted i

Gretchen's phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor of the car with a dull thud. Her legs gave out, and she tumbled out of her car.She dropped to her knees beside the muddy tire tracks. With trembling hands, she desperately tried to gather up the ashes on the ground that she had crushed beneath her own wheels. Her fingernails split, blood mingling with the muddy water and ashes. A bloodcurdling scream tore from her throat, piercing through the night air. Pasted on the shattered urn was a black-and-white photograph where my face could still be vaguely made out. Ignoring her hands, which were now bleeding profusely from being pricked by the debris, she rummaged through the garbage can in search of the stack of medical records and the death certificate she had discarded."No… That's impossible…" With trembling hands, she unfolded the crumpled death certificate. The diagnosis of "multiple organ failure" printed on it was like a dull blade, slowly sawing through every last shred

I vomited mouthful after mouthful of black blood, while the nurse on duty stood there with red-rimmed eyes. "Mr. Wright, are you really sure you don't want us to notify your family?"I shook my head with great effort. With a trembling hand, I pressed my thumbprint onto the Cremation Authorization Form. "Cremate me…" Blazing flames roared to life, reducing all the humiliation, betrayal, and pain I had endured into ashes. …Gretchen had booked out the city's most upscale revolving restaurant to celebrate Dwight's birthday. He wore a birthday hat and gazed at her affectionately before clasping his hands together. "My only wish... is to be with you for the rest of our lives, Greta. I don't ever want us to be apart."Gretchen clutched her uneasy chest. Her brows drew together as she said solemnly, "Don't be ridiculous, Dwi. Dustin may have done something wrong, but he's been with me for a decade. My statement's only a temporary measure. "I only agreed to the divorce to teach him
