Chapter 2

作者: September Almond
Without uttering a word, I spun on my heel and left.

"Fine. Don't come crying to me later, Dustin Wright!"

Blinding pain struck me like a sledgehammer and made me black out for a second. I summoned all of the strength I had and staggered into a 24-hour drugstore around the corner.

"Sir, your card has been frozen."

Gretchen hadn't just frozen my cards; she had also used her connections to blacklist me from every hospital in the city. Even the drugstore wouldn't dare sell me the cheapest painkillers.

The door to my rented room was kicked open.

Dwight sauntered in, covering his nose. His face was twisted with disgust. He clicked his tongue. "I can't believe you're living in such a pigsty, Dustin."

He walked over to my bed and looked down at me condescendingly. I didn't even have the strength to curse at him; all I could do was glare at him.

With the tip of his shoe, he kicked over the half-empty bottle of aspirin I had gone to great lengths to get, sending it tumbling off the nightstand. Then, he raised his foot and stomped hard on the pills, grinding them into powder beneath his shoe.

"No!" My eyes were bloodshot as I lunged at him, attempting to protect the pills.

Yet, he planted his foot on the back of my hand. "Oops, my bad. I didn't see you there."

Dwight pulled out his phone, aimed the camera at my body as I curled up into a ball, and hit the record button. "Dustin seems to be addicted to pretending he's sick, Greta. I came to check on him out of the kindness of my heart, but he's still mad at me. He even smashed all his medicine."

After recording that, he crouched down and smacked my cheek. "Dustin, you're nothing but Gretchen's dog, a human shield meant to take the fall for me. Hurry up and sign that agreement! Don't force Greta to pull out the big guns."

"Get away!"

Dwight snickered and rose to his feet. "Alright, you're a tough guy. Let's see how long you can keep it up."

Just then, my phone rang. Gretchen's voice was cold and unfeeling. "Drop the act; your cheap sob story doesn't work on me. If you don't turn yourself in at the police station before midnight…"

She paused for a moment before continuing, "I'll have someone dump your mother's ashes down the sewer!"

My chest tightened, and all the blood in my body rushed to my head. "Gretchen Payne!" I growled. "Don't you dare lay a finger on Mom!"

The sound of a spatula scraping against the pan came through the other end of the line, followed by her soft chuckle. "Dinner's almost ready, Dwi! Go wash your hands."

Then, she turned her head to the phone, and her voice instantly went cold. "Would you like to try me? See if I'll actually do it?"

I stared at the screen and abruptly burst into laughter. Blood from my nose merged with my tears, splattering on the screen.

I'd ripped out my heart and handed it to her for ten long years, only for her to feed it to the dogs.

"I'll sign it." My voice was eerily calm. "However, I have two conditions. First of all, I want a divorce. Secondly, give me 500 grand."

My time was running out. I needed to buy myself an urn and give Mom a proper burial.

There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line before she broke it. Her tone was dripping with disdain. "Dustin, you really were just after the money all along. Fine, I'll agree to your conditions. Come to my office tomorrow morning."

I pushed the door to the hospital director's office at 10:00 am. Gretchen was seated in her executive chair, and her brows were knitted together in disgust.

The very next second, a divorce agreement was tossed onto her desk. "I've already signed the divorce agreement. Sign the confession, and the 500 grand will hit your account immediately. Take it and get as far away from me as possible. Don't show your face in front of me ever again!"

I shuffled forward, and my legs were as heavy as lead. As soon as I picked up the pen, a violent cramp twisted through my stomach.

In the blink of an eye, a mouthful of dark blood sprayed onto the divorce agreement, staining Gretchen's name red. My vision went black, and I collapsed to the floor.

The next thing I knew, the harsh fluorescent lights of the emergency room came into view.

"Don't let him fool you, Greta! I just asked the emergency room doctor. Dustin isn't sick at all!

"He deliberately made himself look like he was vomiting blood. He just doesn't want to sign the divorce agreement, so he's resorting to these low, underhanded tricks to manipulate you!"

Meanwhile, Dwight's fate was even worse than Gretchen's in the intensive care unit of the prison's affiliated hospital. Quadriplegia robbed him of all control over his body. He was incontinent, and foul-smelling bedsores covered his entire body. As his bank accounts had been frozen, he couldn't afford a good caregiver. The person assigned to look after him was a burly, hot-tempered man. "Damn it, you shat yourself again! Why don't you just drop dead, you useless piece of shit?" The caregiver slapped Dwight across the face, knocking out one of his teeth. Tears streamed down Dwight's face from the pain, yet he didn't even have the strength to turn his head. All he could do was watch helplessly as the caregiver roughly wiped his ulcerated skin with a coarse towel. Every single touch felt like the slow agony of a thousand cuts. He wanted to die, yet he didn't even possess the strength to bite his own tongue. All he could do was lie there in endless agony, fully conscious as his bod

Four burly female inmates with intimidating faces sat on the bunk inside the prison cell, coldly sizing up the new heiress. Gretchen, however, acted as though she didn't notice anything around her. She clutched the cracked urn tightly against her chest. It was the only thing she had desperately begged her lawyer to bring in for her before she was sent to prison. "Hey, newbie!" The cell's female leader rose to her feet and walked up to Gretchen. She abruptly reached out and snatched the urn from Gretchen's arms. "What the hell is this piece of trash? Throw it away!""No!" Gretchen let out a piercing scream. Like an enraged lioness, she pounced on the woman and sank her teeth into her arm."What are you, a dog?" the woman shrieked before kicking Gretchen to the floor. The other three inmates immediately surrounded her, raining punches and kicks on Gretchen as she lay on the floor. "Let's beat her to a pulp and show this bitch who's boss!" Gretchen didn't fight back, nor did

Dwight's outburst echoed through the hospital room like a sharp spike, brutally tearing away the last shred of Gretchen's dignity. "Shut your trap!" Her eyes dilated instantly, and her hand, which was clutching the knife, trembled uncontrollably. "You're lying! I love him! Why would I ever be jealous of him?"His features contorted, yet he cackled. "You love him? If you loved him, why would you make him take the fall for me? If you loved him, why would you abandon him time and again to go on dates with me? "You knew damn well he was being beaten to a pulp in the prison every single day, living a life worse than death, but what did you do? Absolutely nothing! He was sentenced to three years, yet you didn't even visit him once, did you? You threw every single letter he wrote to you in the trash!" Gretchen blanched, shaking her head frantically. "No, I didn't. I didn't know… It was all your doing. It was all you!"Dwight wheezed. "I did it, but you allowed it, didn't you? Ms. Payn

Gretchen slowly turned her head and stared at the face she had once thought was pure and flawless. However, all she could see in her mind was the vicious look on Dwight's face in the footage as he crushed the medication that could keep me alive. The cops had already surrounded them. When she remained silent, he completely dropped the act to save his own skin. He jabbed his finger at her nose and bellowed, "Gretchen Payne, you're freaking useless; you can't even get rid of a dead man. Hurry up and use your money to get us off the trending topics! Aren't you the director of a hospital?"As soon as his words fell, a crisp, sharp crack echoed through the air. Gretchen put all her strength into it and slapped Dwight hard across the face. The blow spun him halfway around before he crashed hard onto the concrete floor, which was littered with shards of glass. Dwight shrieked as his palm landed on the shattered glass. Blood oozed from the wound. Gretchen lifted her foot and planted i

Gretchen's phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor of the car with a dull thud. Her legs gave out, and she tumbled out of her car.She dropped to her knees beside the muddy tire tracks. With trembling hands, she desperately tried to gather up the ashes on the ground that she had crushed beneath her own wheels. Her fingernails split, blood mingling with the muddy water and ashes. A bloodcurdling scream tore from her throat, piercing through the night air. Pasted on the shattered urn was a black-and-white photograph where my face could still be vaguely made out. Ignoring her hands, which were now bleeding profusely from being pricked by the debris, she rummaged through the garbage can in search of the stack of medical records and the death certificate she had discarded."No… That's impossible…" With trembling hands, she unfolded the crumpled death certificate. The diagnosis of "multiple organ failure" printed on it was like a dull blade, slowly sawing through every last shred

I vomited mouthful after mouthful of black blood, while the nurse on duty stood there with red-rimmed eyes. "Mr. Wright, are you really sure you don't want us to notify your family?"I shook my head with great effort. With a trembling hand, I pressed my thumbprint onto the Cremation Authorization Form. "Cremate me…" Blazing flames roared to life, reducing all the humiliation, betrayal, and pain I had endured into ashes. …Gretchen had booked out the city's most upscale revolving restaurant to celebrate Dwight's birthday. He wore a birthday hat and gazed at her affectionately before clasping his hands together. "My only wish... is to be with you for the rest of our lives, Greta. I don't ever want us to be apart."Gretchen clutched her uneasy chest. Her brows drew together as she said solemnly, "Don't be ridiculous, Dwi. Dustin may have done something wrong, but he's been with me for a decade. My statement's only a temporary measure. "I only agreed to the divorce to teach him
