Chapter 3

Auteur: Oliver
Damian walked in wearing a sharp black suit, silver-grey hair slicked back without a strand out of place.

But when he saw Isabella standing in the middle of the hall looking ready to kill, and dozens of phones pointed directly at him, the composure drained right off his face.

Everyone in the pack knew.

Damian held his Alpha position largely because of Isabella's family backing.

Push Isabella too far, and one word from her could knock him off that throne.

Damian hurried over, his spine instinctively bending a few degrees.

"Sweetheart, what are you doing here?"

"You could've given me a heads-up."

"It's freezing outside, and you know your health isn't..."

SLAP. Isabella smacked the receipt against his chest.

"You tell me."

Damian glanced down at the receipt. His expression flickered for just a second.

But the smile came right back.

"Babe, it's a misunderstanding. A huge misunderstanding."

"There are pack members everywhere. Let's talk about this at home, yeah?"

"Home?"

Isabella's eyes went wide.

"You spent seven nights of Thanksgiving in a three-thousand-coin luxury suite, and you didn't know how to come home?"

The smile on Damian's face died. Then he slowly turned his head and looked at me.

That look. I knew it too well.

In my last life, he'd looked at me the exact same way.

No guilt. No shame. Just cold, quiet calculation.

Like he was looking at a chess piece he could sacrifice whenever it suited him.

He let out a deep sigh. "Selena."

"Some things did happen between us that shouldn't have."

"But I've changed. I cut things off with you a long time ago."

"You can't just cause a scene like this because I turned you down."

"And you definitely can't give my mate the wrong idea."

The entire hall went dead quiet.

My fingertips trembled.

Those three sentences.

In my last life, those exact three sentences destroyed me.

Elena stood in the crowd, blinked her eyes, and spoke in a deliberately pained voice.

"Selena..."

"I really had no idea you and the Alpha were..."

"Doing something wrong isn't the scary part."

"The scary part is not having the guts to own up to it."

Damian glanced at me and beckoned with his hand. "Come on."

"Let's go to the conference room and sort this out."

Isabella's brow knotted tight.

"Conference room? For what?"

"Right here. Say it right here!"

I looked up at her, then blinked twice. Fast.

Isabella paused. Something seemed to click.

She didn't stop him.

The conference room door closed.

The next second, every trace of warmth vanished from Damian's face.

He sat down in the chair, expression terrifyingly calm.

"Selena."

"I know you're a hard worker. Dependable."

"Admit it now, and I can still leave you a way out."

I tilted my head and tapped my phone twice with one finger.

"Alpha Damian, I think the seven all-nighters fried my brain."

"I'm a little confused. What exactly do you want me to admit?"

Damian smiled.

"Simple."

"When we walk out of here, you cry and apologize to my wife."

"Tell her you've been chasing me this whole time."

"The hotel was your idea. The luxury suite was your booking. Even the romantic extras were things you brought."

"Say you were obsessed with me, got rejected over and over, and finally snapped and caused today's scene out of spite."

I laughed. Cold.

"So I just take all the blame?"

Damian reached over, actually tried to touch the back of my hand.

"Think of it as taking a hit for me. I'll remember the favor."

I yanked my hand away.

He just gave a helpless little smile.

"Selena."

"Reputation doesn't really matter for a she-wolf with no background like you."

"But your parents are still out in the countryside, right?"

My fingers clenched tight.

"What are you saying?"

Damian spread his hands.

"Daughter's out here being the other woman. You think they'll ever be able to hold their heads up around the pack again?"

"And if you don't play along..."

He paused, a meaningful smile curling at his lips.

"I can't guarantee what happens next."

My head went white.

Last life.

After I died, my father stood outside the council hall and went grey overnight.

My mother clutched my death certificate and cried until she passed out.

They couldn't take the grief and the rumors. On the drive back, their minds were somewhere else. A truck ran a light and hit them head on.

I died. And they didn't make it either.

I clenched my jaw.

"And if I don't go along with it?"

Damian slowly straightened up.

The smile on his face grew wider.

"Then don't. Won't matter."

"You were just out there screaming about finding the other woman."

"But can you actually find her? You don't even know who she is."

He stared straight into my eyes, one word at a time.

"So if I say it's you, what are you gonna do about it?"

In that moment.

Seven days of Thanksgiving rage. A lifetime of being destroyed. My parents dying in blood.

And the bone-deep disgust I felt for this man across two lifetimes.

All of it slammed together inside my skull at once.

Two lives of broken pieces finally crashed into each other.

And I understood.

Everything. Every last thing. It all made sense now.

I shot to my feet.

"Damian, I'm done!"

Damian was still smiling.

"Selena, don't push your luck."

I spun around, ripped the conference room door open.

Dozens of pack members were staring right at me.

Every phone still pointing.

I charged through the hall, past every camera, straight at Isabella.

Then I screamed.

"SIS!"

"I know who the other woman is!"

Before the enforcement squad arrived, Isabella had already lost every last shred of patience. She stood in front of Elena, chest heaving, all the fury she'd been holding back finally detonating.Elena clutched her swollen cheek, the fragile innocent act long gone, looking like someone whose last disguise had been ripped clean off.On the other side, Damian was on his knees in front of Isabella."Isabella, I was wrong.""We've been mates for years. You can't really hand me over to the Elder Council.""Give me one more chance. I can explain everything."Isabella looked down at him. Nothing left in her eyes but disgust and the cold stare of a stranger."Mates?"She let out one short laugh."My family fought to get you the Alpha seat. My family gave you warriors and silver. I spent years shielding you from the Elders' doubts. And this is how you repay me?""You were meeting another woman behind my back. You had the whole pack covering for you. You were ready to throw Viola out as your scap

"Check it."Isabella said one word. Cold enough to frost glass. The treasury elder had been hiding behind the crowd watching the show for a while now. When she called his name, the old wolf visibly flinched. He hurried out clutching the ledger, forehead already slick with sweat.Isabella didn't even glance at Damian. She spoke only to the elder. "Pull every pack expense from the seven days of Thanksgiving.""Hotel charges, private dining, gift purchases, and every extra under Damian's name.""And Viola's pack stipend.""Her seven-day duty pay, border travel costs, and Moonshade Inn room fees. Every single item."Damian's face went dark."Isabella!""How long are you going to keep this up?"Isabella looked up at him. The chill in her eyes could stop a heartbeat."Whose money built this territory's treasury? You haven't forgotten, have you?""Back when you were a nobody Alpha with no foundation, who went to the Elder Council and fought to put you in that seat?""I put you up there. And I

The hall was silent as death. The wolves who'd been whispering moments ago had all gone mute. Dozens of stares locked onto me.I looked at Elena. My voice was cold."Weren't you just saying it was suspicious that Damian and I were on comms late at night?""Then maybe you can explain why your voice shows up in his recording."Elena's lips trembled. The tears came fast."Viola, you can't just decide it's me because a voice sounds similar...""Voices can be faked. How do I know you didn't plant fake evidence to clear yourself?"Damian grabbed the opening. "Exactly. One comm recording doesn't prove anything.""Viola, don't drag innocent pack members into your mess just because you're under suspicion."I almost laughed."Dragging innocent people?"I pointed at the surveillance footage still up on the crystal screen."Then explain why I was receiving your pack orders in the middle of the night.""Why you had me rewriting the northern alliance terms. Why you kept me on border comms until dawn

Elena's tears came flooding out."I was handling the hotel registration for Alpha Damian!""He said there were trade envoys from outside the territory staying at the Moonshade Inn over Thanksgiving. I just picked up the room pass like he told me to.""Pack assistants handle this kind of thing for the Alpha all the time. What's so strange about that?"I nearly choked laughing."Booking a private Moonlight Suite for outside trade envoys? For seven consecutive nights?""You actually expect anyone to buy that?"Someone in the crowd couldn't hold it in. A laugh escaped, but one look at Damian's face and they ducked their head.Sophia wasn't laughing at all.The fury behind her eyes was barely contained.Damian immediately stepped in front of Elena."I told her to do it.""She was just following pack protocol. She had no idea what happened in that room."I stared at him. The irony was almost too much."Alpha Damian, didn't you just say I was the one chasing you?""Now the hotel records show

Damian's face finally went all the way dark.He stepped forward, clearly trying to shut this down. "Viola, cut it out.""Phones contain pack business and private information. If we force an inspection and something leaks, who takes the blame?"I laughed right in his face."When you were putting me on trial in front of the whole pack just now, nobody seemed worried about privacy.""Or does the Alpha get privacy while regular pack members don't?"Low murmurs spread through the hall. More than a few wolves were looking at Damian differently now.Elena was still crying. She sniffled softly. "Viola, you probably already deleted everything ahead of time.""Acting all confident now just because you know there's nothing left to find."I looked at her. And smiled."Nothing to find?"I raised my hand and pointed at the receipt in Sophia's hand."Then check the Moonshade Inn.""Messages can be deleted. They can be faked. But the hotel guard logs and the scent imprints left by anyone who entered t

The second those words left my mouth, the entire council hall went dead silent. The wolves who'd been whispering shut up instantly. Dozens of phone cameras swung toward me.Elena's face went white, but she was still fighting to hold that innocent look together.Damian walked out of the conference room behind me.The smile on his face hadn't fully faded. He clearly assumed I was cornered and this was my last desperate move.Isabella locked her eyes on me. "Who?"I caught my breath, but I didn't point at Elena. Not yet.Last life, I'd rushed to prove myself and walked straight into the trap they'd set. This time, I wasn't going to hand myself over with a single accusation.I took a step forward. And smiled."Sis, if I just say a name right now, you might not believe me.""So why don't we let the evidence do the talking?"Isabella frowned. "Evidence?"I turned and swept my gaze across every wolf in the hall."Think carefully. During those seven days of Thanksgiving, who was the first pers
