Chapter 2

Auteur: Oliver
The whole hall erupted.

"Wait, for real?"

"Same hotel?"

"No wonder she was the only one on duty all seven days."

"Never would've guessed. Selena actually went and..."

More and more phones pointed at me.

Isabella came toward me step by step, heeled boots striking the stone floor, each one heavier than the last.

"Same hotel?"

"What a coincidence."

I looked at the veins popping on the back of her hand. In my last life, that slap had left my ears ringing for days. I could almost feel the burn again.

But this time, I didn't back down.

"If you can't explain yourself today, don't even think about walking out of here!"

I looked down at the receipt in her hand.

The next second, I laughed.

Not because anything was funny. Because I was so angry it came out as a laugh.

"A luxury private suite?"

"Three thousand a night?"

I snatched the receipt and jabbed my finger at the price, my voice shaking with fury.

"I wish I could afford three thousand!"

"You think I'm worth that?"

"The stipend your husband pays me for pack work, does that even cover two nights?"

"I was in a two-hundred-a-night basic single room!"

"And to this day, pack finance still hasn't reimbursed me!"

I pulled out my phone and projected my booking confirmation onto the main screen.

Room number, price, check-in time. Every detail, crystal clear.

Everyone could see it.

The murmuring stopped cold.

Isabella frowned.

But Elena immediately went red-eyed, voice trembling.

"A regular room doesn't mean you can't go to the luxury suite..."

"Nobody said you have to stay in the room you booked."

I stared at her. Then I smiled.

"You're right."

"Nobody said you have to stay in the room you booked."

"And most nights, I wasn't actually sleeping in my regular room."

The crowd stirred again.

"Oh my God, is she actually admitting it?"

"Never seen someone this brazen."

"Wait, does that mean she really..."

I was so mad I almost choked laughing.

"Because I spent every night past midnight in the office working on proposals!"

"Seven days of Thanksgiving. I booked seven nights. The total amount of actual sleep I got might not even add up to ten hours!"

"Pull the Moonshade Inn security footage right now!"

"Let everyone see whether I was sleeping around or killing myself for this pack!"

By the time I finished, my eyes were burning red.

In my last life, nobody wanted to see any of this.

All they wanted was to watch me get slapped. Watch the Alpha throw me out personally. Watch the so-called homewrecker get publicly humiliated.

This time, I was going to make every last one of them see the truth.

Whether I was out there cheating or being worked to death.

I spun around and lunged straight at Isabella.

I grabbed on to her legs and wailed like the world was ending.

"SIS!"

Isabella went completely rigid.

"What are you doing?!"

"You spent Thanksgiving as a grass widow, and I spent Thanksgiving as a slave!"

"Your husband wouldn't come home, and my Alpha wouldn't do his job!"

"How are we both this unlucky?!"

"My overtime pay hasn't been issued, my hotel costs haven't been reimbursed, my proposal got sent back after eight revisions!"

"I pulled seven all-nighters in a row, and at the end of it all I get slapped with a homewrecker label!"

"That goddamn other woman!"

"Right now I could actually kill her!"

Isabella froze solid.

The hand that had knocked my ears ringing in my last life trembled once, then, incredibly, reached down like it was trying to help me up.

"You... just get up first..."

"Let's talk about this like normal people..."

Elena's face shifted.

She jumped in fast.

"But Selena..."

"You and Alpha Damian were on comms late at night all the time. That can't all be work, right?"

That only gave me more to say.

I let go of Isabella and got to my feet.

"Sure. Let's do this."

I opened my phone and blasted the audio through the whole hall.

"The whole pack can listen in."

"My late-night passion sessions with Alpha Damian."

The next second, the recording played.

Damian's exhausted, irritated voice filled the entire room.

"Selena! It's three in the morning! Why isn't the proposal on my desk yet?"

"Selena, why isn't this done? The client says it's not high-end enough!"

"Make the title bigger!"

"Don't ask me how big! Big enough that you can see it from across the room!"

"Stay on top of the supplier! I need them there by nine tomorrow morning, no excuses!"

"You young wolves need to stop thinking about rest. Building this territory is what matters!"

His entitled, matter-of-fact voice echoed through the hall.

I listened to the same sounds that had tortured me through countless nights, and my eyes slowly burned hot.

"Listen to this!"

"I just want to ask one thing!"

"What kind of mistress is up at three a.m. with her Alpha arguing about how big a proposal title should be?"

"Even if I was the other woman, at least I'd be getting something out of it, right?"

"So what did I get?"

"A mountain of work!"

"And a big fat label I didn't earn!"

Someone in the crowd finally cracked.

"Pffft..."

A laugh escaped.

Then a few more wolves ducked their heads, shoulders shaking.

The way they looked at me shifted from suspicion to pure sympathy.

Elena was biting her lip so hard it might bleed. Her face was getting uglier by the second.

I turned and looked straight at her.

"But actually, you."

"How do you know exactly how long Damian and I were on comms over Thanksgiving?"

Elena's face went white.

Right then. DING.

The elevator doors opened.

Damian was here.

Before the enforcement squad arrived, Isabella had already lost every last shred of patience. She stood in front of Elena, chest heaving, all the fury she'd been holding back finally detonating.Elena clutched her swollen cheek, the fragile innocent act long gone, looking like someone whose last disguise had been ripped clean off.On the other side, Damian was on his knees in front of Isabella."Isabella, I was wrong.""We've been mates for years. You can't really hand me over to the Elder Council.""Give me one more chance. I can explain everything."Isabella looked down at him. Nothing left in her eyes but disgust and the cold stare of a stranger."Mates?"She let out one short laugh."My family fought to get you the Alpha seat. My family gave you warriors and silver. I spent years shielding you from the Elders' doubts. And this is how you repay me?""You were meeting another woman behind my back. You had the whole pack covering for you. You were ready to throw Viola out as your scap

"Check it."Isabella said one word. Cold enough to frost glass. The treasury elder had been hiding behind the crowd watching the show for a while now. When she called his name, the old wolf visibly flinched. He hurried out clutching the ledger, forehead already slick with sweat.Isabella didn't even glance at Damian. She spoke only to the elder. "Pull every pack expense from the seven days of Thanksgiving.""Hotel charges, private dining, gift purchases, and every extra under Damian's name.""And Viola's pack stipend.""Her seven-day duty pay, border travel costs, and Moonshade Inn room fees. Every single item."Damian's face went dark."Isabella!""How long are you going to keep this up?"Isabella looked up at him. The chill in her eyes could stop a heartbeat."Whose money built this territory's treasury? You haven't forgotten, have you?""Back when you were a nobody Alpha with no foundation, who went to the Elder Council and fought to put you in that seat?""I put you up there. And I

The hall was silent as death. The wolves who'd been whispering moments ago had all gone mute. Dozens of stares locked onto me.I looked at Elena. My voice was cold."Weren't you just saying it was suspicious that Damian and I were on comms late at night?""Then maybe you can explain why your voice shows up in his recording."Elena's lips trembled. The tears came fast."Viola, you can't just decide it's me because a voice sounds similar...""Voices can be faked. How do I know you didn't plant fake evidence to clear yourself?"Damian grabbed the opening. "Exactly. One comm recording doesn't prove anything.""Viola, don't drag innocent pack members into your mess just because you're under suspicion."I almost laughed."Dragging innocent people?"I pointed at the surveillance footage still up on the crystal screen."Then explain why I was receiving your pack orders in the middle of the night.""Why you had me rewriting the northern alliance terms. Why you kept me on border comms until dawn

Elena's tears came flooding out."I was handling the hotel registration for Alpha Damian!""He said there were trade envoys from outside the territory staying at the Moonshade Inn over Thanksgiving. I just picked up the room pass like he told me to.""Pack assistants handle this kind of thing for the Alpha all the time. What's so strange about that?"I nearly choked laughing."Booking a private Moonlight Suite for outside trade envoys? For seven consecutive nights?""You actually expect anyone to buy that?"Someone in the crowd couldn't hold it in. A laugh escaped, but one look at Damian's face and they ducked their head.Sophia wasn't laughing at all.The fury behind her eyes was barely contained.Damian immediately stepped in front of Elena."I told her to do it.""She was just following pack protocol. She had no idea what happened in that room."I stared at him. The irony was almost too much."Alpha Damian, didn't you just say I was the one chasing you?""Now the hotel records show

Damian's face finally went all the way dark.He stepped forward, clearly trying to shut this down. "Viola, cut it out.""Phones contain pack business and private information. If we force an inspection and something leaks, who takes the blame?"I laughed right in his face."When you were putting me on trial in front of the whole pack just now, nobody seemed worried about privacy.""Or does the Alpha get privacy while regular pack members don't?"Low murmurs spread through the hall. More than a few wolves were looking at Damian differently now.Elena was still crying. She sniffled softly. "Viola, you probably already deleted everything ahead of time.""Acting all confident now just because you know there's nothing left to find."I looked at her. And smiled."Nothing to find?"I raised my hand and pointed at the receipt in Sophia's hand."Then check the Moonshade Inn.""Messages can be deleted. They can be faked. But the hotel guard logs and the scent imprints left by anyone who entered t

The second those words left my mouth, the entire council hall went dead silent. The wolves who'd been whispering shut up instantly. Dozens of phone cameras swung toward me.Elena's face went white, but she was still fighting to hold that innocent look together.Damian walked out of the conference room behind me.The smile on his face hadn't fully faded. He clearly assumed I was cornered and this was my last desperate move.Isabella locked her eyes on me. "Who?"I caught my breath, but I didn't point at Elena. Not yet.Last life, I'd rushed to prove myself and walked straight into the trap they'd set. This time, I wasn't going to hand myself over with a single accusation.I took a step forward. And smiled."Sis, if I just say a name right now, you might not believe me.""So why don't we let the evidence do the talking?"Isabella frowned. "Evidence?"I turned and swept my gaze across every wolf in the hall."Think carefully. During those seven days of Thanksgiving, who was the first pers
