Chapter 3

Author: Ocean Cloud
"As a son-in-law by marriage to the Sweeney family, if you don't even have that much self-awareness, you deserve to be kicked out!"

His mocking voice continued behind me.

I let out a bitter laugh and walked forward, step by step.

I did not know when it had started, but suddenly, it began to snow.

Bathed in the glow of the streetlights, I suddenly felt as if the whole world had become a bit hazy.

After walking just a few steps, I soon found myself sitting on a lounge chair.

I was a worthless and pathetic person at that moment.

I ran my hand over the centipede-like scar on my waist.

It was precisely because of this scar that I had successfully married into the Sweeney family as their son-in-law.

I had donated one of my kidneys to Sherry.

It was precisely for that reason that the Sweeney family patriarch had arranged for Sherry to marry me.

The patriarch even forbade me from telling Sherry about it, so as not to burden her with the guilt.

I had not planned on telling her anyway.

A year ago, Sherry sent me to North Maia, hoping I would suffer.

At the time, I told her that North Maia was a place where people were devoured whole. I begged her not to send me there.

But Sherry said coldly, "Don't worry. I'll have people ensure your safety. Other than that, you'll have to fend for yourself."

What she did not know was that as soon as I arrived in North Maia, I was dragged into an operating room by people that Harold had sent.

They intended to remove one of my kidneys, but discovered before proceeding that I had already donated one.

Furious, they kicked and punched me relentlessly until I was spitting blood and convulsing all over. They thought I was nothing but a worthless piece of trash.

To them, I was useless because I had already lost a kidney.

When they failed to remove my kidney, they tried to force me into illegal activities.

I refused every single one of them.

In the end, I was beaten to the brink of death and dumped in a garbage heap.

I mustered the last ounce of strength to crawl back to my home country, only to unexpectedly learn that I had a terminal illness and did not have long to live.

When I heard the news, I was quickly swallowed up by the tide of death.

It was getting colder and colder, and I curled up in the chair.

I did not know how I managed to get through that night.

The next day, I saw a news headline.

[Ms. Sweeney has booked all the fireworks in the city just to celebrate her man's birthday.]

The comments section was abuzz.

[Wow, Ms. Sweeney really treats her husband so well.]

[It must be such a blessing to be Ms. Sweeney's husband. When will it be my turn?]

[I absolutely have to watch tonight's fireworks.]

'Birthday?' I thought. 'Ms. Sweeney's husband?'

My birthday had long since passed.

If Sherry was celebrating her man's birthday, then that man certainly wasn't me.

It had to be Harold.

I could not help but feel a wave of bitterness welling up inside me.

I made my way, with great difficulty, to the Legal Aid Center to consult a lawyer about some matters.

Then, with the center's help, I drafted a divorce agreement.

'Sherry, since there's no love left between us, let's just end it,' I thought.

I knew Sherry would be celebrating Harold's birthday tonight at Seasky Villa.

It was the most luxurious hotel in the city.

I heard that a single night's stay there started at several thousand and could go as high as $100,000.

It was a den of extravagance for the wealthy.

When it got dark, at the entrance to Seasky Villa, luxury cars lined up, and guests swarmed in.

With security guards on duty, there was no way I could get in dressed like a penniless bum.

Clutching that divorce agreement in my hand, I waited outside the entrance.

Sherry was furious. Her chest heaved as she raised her hand, ready to strike him again. This time, Harold caught her wrist before she could strike him. "Can you stop pretending you love him so deeply? Deep down, you're just like me—selfish and cold-hearted.""No, I'm not like you!"Sherry shook her head."If you really want to avenge Liam, then kill me. Do you have the guts to kill me?"Provoked by Harold's repeated taunts, Sherry drew a dagger.Realizing what Sherry was about to do, I tried to stop her."Sherry, don't!"I stood in front of Harold, but it was no use. The dagger passed right through me and into Harold's chest. The next second, Harold collapsed in a pool of blood."Join Liam in death!"Sherry stabbed Harold repeatedly. She did not stop until he had completely stopped breathing."Liam..."Sherry tossed aside the blood-soaked dagger, knelt before my grave, and reached out to touch my portrait."I've avenged you."Then, she pulled the divorce agreement from

Little did he know that Sherry already knew the whole truth. She slapped Harold across the face. "Are you still going to lie to me?"Harold rubbed his swollen cheek but continued to deny it. "When have I lied to you?"It was not until Sherry laid the evidence right in front of him that Harold could no longer refute it.His face was ashen. He looked at Sherry and tried to manipulate her. "Sherry, listen to me. I didn't set out to get revenge on Liam. When I first heard you were marrying him, I was truly filled with hatred. I wished he were dead."But when I came back to you and realized you still loved me as much as ever, my hatred for him faded. I just wanted to be closer to you, which is why I resorted to such a desperate measure. "I just wanted to teach him a lesson to make him walk away from you on his own. I never intended to kill him."I could not help but laugh. Even in the face of such irrefutable evidence, he managed to come up with such a ridiculous excuse.Sherry s

One of the videos showed Harold on his birthday falsely accusing me of hurting him.I was a little surprised. I hadn't expected Mr. Sweeney to have tracked down that video too. There were also clips of me on the streets, looking pitiful as I rummaged through trash cans for food.Mr. Sweeney was deeply distressed."Sherry, why did you treat Liam this way?"Faced with Mr. Sweeney's questioning, Sherry did not know how to respond. Her intention had simply been to make me suffer a little, to force me to back down, and to make me admit my mistake. She never imagined I had endured such torment."I really didn't know things would turn out like this!"Sherry slapped herself hard across the face twice. She was overcome with self-loathing. "It's all my fault for being so stupid! I caused Liam's death!"Liam, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry…"Sherry cried so hard that she nearly fainted.Seeing her in such agony, I could not help but want to step forward to comfort her and to wipe away her te

At the same time, he ordered his bodyguards to keep an eye on Harold. As Harold watched the two walk away, a sense of foreboding welled up inside him.He tried to slip away, but the bodyguards immediately stopped him. "Mr. York, you can't leave yet.""Really? You think I won't call the police and report you for unlawfully holding me against my will?" Harold tried to threaten them.As a result, he was beaten up until he backed down.Mr. Sweeney led Sherry to the study and placed the items he had prepared in front of her.I leaned in to take a look. It was the surgery consent form from when I donated a kidney to Sherry, along with some videos. When Sherry saw that the signature on the consent form was mine, her eyes widened in surprise. But her first reaction was still one of skepticism. "Grandpa, this is fake, right?""Don't you trust me anymore?" Mr. Sweeney sighed heavily. "If I'd known this would happen, I would've told you the truth from the very beginning."Sherry's hand

The police officer's words left Sherry completely dumbfounded."How could this happen? He had a terminal illness?! Why didn't he tell me?" Sherry was emotional.I thought she would be indifferent to my death. Her reaction told me that she still cared about me, after all."We don't know the answer to that. Once we've gone through the formalities, you can take the body home."Sherry looked at my scarred body, and tears streamed down her face. With trembling hands, she cupped my cheeks. Her voice was choked with emotion. "Liam, you always lie, don't you? You're lying to me now, aren't you? Open your eyes and look at me!"Warm tears fell onto my cold body."Liam Sullivan, if you don't wake up soon, I'm really going to get very angry!"It did not matter. The only response was silence.I stood right beside her and felt the sorrow radiating from her. It was almost unbelievable.Did she not hate me?I was dead. I thought she would be happy. Why was she crying?Maybe even she did

When it came to me, Sherry felt nothing but disgust. Her voice turned icy. "What right does he have to be upset? Today, he made someone call me to say that he was dead. Maybe he thought I'd go see him. How ridiculous!"A barely perceptible flicker of emotion crossed Harold's eyes. "Well, he really did go too far this time. Sherry, I'd like us to wear them together. Is that okay?""Sure," Sherry said with a smile.Right in front of me, the two of them pinned the brooches on each other.I smiled bitterly, then I began to cry.It seemed even spirits could shed tears.I wanted to leave Sherry so badly. I did not want to see her being affectionate with another man.But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't leave her side. All I could do was endure the sorrow. The following day, Sherry received another call from the authorities. This time, she simply refused to answer. After rejecting the call three times, Sherry's anger reached its peak. She summoned her secretary and said, "F
