Vivienne's POV

The alarm went off at six.

I was already awake.

I had been awake since four forty in the specific way of someone whose body had understood what day it was before the alarm had the chance to announce it. I lay in the dark and looked at the ceiling and listened to my mother sleeping in the next room and the city outside doing its early morning thing and the dress hanging in the corner of my room taking up space in a way I could feel even in the dark.

I got up at five thirty.

  • I WON'T MARRY A BILLIONAIRE    The Morning

Vivienne's POV The alarm went off at six.I was already awake.I had been awake since four forty in the specific way of someone whose body had understood what day it was before the alarm had the chance to announce it. I lay in the dark and looked at the ceiling and listened to my mother sleeping in the next room and the city outside doing its early morning thing and the dress hanging in the corner of my room taking up space in a way I could feel even in the dark.I got up at five thirty.Made tea.Stood at my window. The city below was in its quietest hour. The particular quality of early morning before the day had decided what it was going to be. Clean and unhurried and asking nothing.I looked at the bracelet on my wrist. The coordinates catching the first thin light.I thought about a man who had put on an apron in a restaurant because he wanted to see if I was real before the money told me who he was.I thought about my mother's kitchen and chamomile tea and a warning that had be

  • I WON'T MARRY A BILLIONAIRE    The Article

Vivienne's POVI put my phone in my pocket.I stood in the doorway for a moment. The room continued around me. Maya and Charles's father still in their conversation. Lyla and Mrs. Chris Dick. Kelvin making my mother laugh again at something. Charles across the room looking at me now because he had felt the shift in me the way he felt most things, without being told, just from the quality of my stillness changing.I gave him a very small shake of my head. Not now.He held my gaze for a moment. Then he nodded.I went to my bedroom and closed the door and sat on the edge of my bed and read the article properly.....It was well written. That was the thing that sat with me alongside everything else. Whoever had been given this information had been given enough of it to construct something credible. Not sloppy. Not the rushed assembly of a story that had been handed over at the last minute and thrown together without care. This had been prepared. The details were accurate where I could ver

  • I WON'T MARRY A BILLIONAIRE    One Day

Vivienne's POVThe apartment had never held this many people. Not in the four years I had lived in it. It was a large apartment by any reasonable measure but it had always been a space for one person living deliberately and alone and the furniture and the light and the specific arrangement of everything in it reflected that.Today it reflected something else.Today it was full.....My mother had been up since six.I had found her in the kitchen when I came out at seven making the kind of breakfast that required multiple elements happening simultaneously, the specific organised chaos of a woman who expressed love through feeding people and had a room full of people to feed. She had looked at me when I came in.I had looked at her.We had not talked about Charles and Louis and the photograph and the metadata. Not yet. There hadn't been a moment and I hadn't made one because today was not the day for that conversation. Today was the day before my wedding and my mother was making breakfa

  • I WON'T MARRY A BILLIONAIRE    Louis Dials

Louis's (Third POV)His apartment was quiet. Not the uncomfortable quiet of a space that had never learned to hold a person properly. The settled quiet of somewhere that had been lived in alone for long enough that the solitude had become structural. Part of the walls. Part of the light. Part of the way the morning came in through the east window and moved across the floor at the angle it had always moved at because no one else's furniture had ever redirected it.Louis sat in the chair by the window. He was still. This was unusual for him in the specific way that stillness was unusual for people whose natural register was movement and presence and the forward momentum of someone who had always understood that occupying space fully was its own kind of power. He was not occupying space fully this morning. He was sitting in a chair by a window looking at a photograph.....The photograph was old.Not framed. That was the thing about it. He had never framed it. It had lived in a drawer fo

  • I WON'T MARRY A BILLIONAIRE    What Charles Knows About Louis

Vivienne's POVHe came back to the table. He sat down. Not across from me this time. Beside me. The chair pulled around the corner of the table so that when he talked he was talking to the room rather than to my face directly and I understood that this was how he needed to do it. Not performing the telling. Just saying it.I sat beside him and listened.....He started with Sophie. He said the name the way you said the name of something you had been carrying for a long time and had never said out loud in this particular context before. Carefully. With the specific weight of someone who understood that saying it here meant something different from the private way he had been carrying it.Sophie had been Louis's for fourteen months. Charles had met her at an event Louis had brought her to. She had been warm and interesting and he had liked her in the straightforward way you liked someone your friend had chosen. Nothing more than that. Two months later Louis had told him Sophie had ended

  • I WON'T MARRY A BILLIONAIRE    She Tells Charles

Vivienne's POVI called him at seven. He answered immediately the way he always answered. Fully present. No adjustment period between wherever he had been and the call."Can you come over," I said.Something in my voice. He heard it."Twenty minutes," he said.....My mother was up when I came out of the bedroom. She was in the kitchen with her tea and she looked at me and read my face and made a second cup without asking whether I wanted one and set it on the counter and went to sit in the living room with the specific tact of a woman who understood when her presence in a kitchen was the wrong kind of presence.I stood at the counter and held the mug and waited.Charles arrived in eighteen minutes. He came through the door and looked at me and I could see him reading me the way my mother had read me. Quickly and completely and with the attention of someone who had learned the specific language of my face and was now translating it and not finding anything that made him feel settled.
