The Billionaire’s Unwanted Wife Elara Vale has spent years fighting to save her family’s failing business after her father’s mysterious disappearance leaves behind debts, secrets and unanswered questions. When the company finally reaches the brink of collapse, she accepts an offer she never imagined she would consider: a contract marriage to Alaric Thorne, the cold and ruthless billionaire CEO of Thorne International. For Alaric, the marriage is supposed to be nothing more than a strategic arrangement. For Elara, it is a chance to protect her family’s future without surrendering her independence. They agree to rules, boundaries and an expiration date. But living together makes those rules increasingly difficult to follow. Their constant clashes soon give way to undeniable attraction, while the arrival of Silas Thorne threatens Alaric’s position and exposes dangerous secrets buried within the Thorne family. When Elara discovers a mysterious Black Ledger linking her missing father to Alaric’s family, she realises her marriage may be part of something far more complicated than she ever imagined. As Elara and Alaric join forces to uncover the truth, their contractual relationship slowly becomes genuine love. When they believe they have finally defeated their enemies, a devastating revelation makes Elara question everything. Evidence emerges suggesting that Alaric married her only to use her to reach her father. Heartbroken, Elara walks away and builds an empire of her own. But when Alaric is framed for a crime he did not commit, Elara must decide whether the man who broke her heart is truly her enemy or the one person she can still trust. Because some contracts are meant to be broken. And some loves are impossible to escape.

Chapter 1: The Price of Survival

The mahogany walls of my father’s study felt like they were closing in, smelling of old cigars and desperation. My father, Arthur Vance, looked twenty years older than he had a month ago. The empire he had built—Vance Logistics—wasn't just crumbling; it was being systematically dismantled by a predator who enjoyed the scent of blood.

"We have no other options, Elara," he whispered, his voice trembling. "The creditors are at the door. If we don't secure a massive infusion of capital by Friday, we lose everything. The house, the company... your legacy."

I stood by the window, my reflection ghosting over the rainy cityscape of New York. I didn't feel the panic he did. I felt a cold, sharpening clarity. I had spent five years building my own reputation in the industry, carving out a niche in sustainable supply chains, only to have it incinerated in a single afternoon three years ago.

I knew exactly who the predator was.

"Alaric Thorne," I said, the name tasting like poison.

"He’s the only one with the liquidity to save us," my father replied. "And he’s... he’s expressed an interest in a partnership. But not a corporate one."

I turned, my brow furrowed. "What does that mean?"

The door to the study opened without a knock. I didn't need to look to know who it was. The air in the room shifted, becoming heavy and charged, as if a storm had just walked inside. Alaric Thorne entered with the effortless grace of a man who owned the ground he walked on and the air everyone else breathed.

He was devastatingly handsome in a way that felt dangerous—sharp cheekbones, eyes the colour of a winter sea, and a mouth that looked like it had forgotten how to smile. He wore a charcoal suit that cost more than my first car, and his presence commanded every inch of the room.

"Arthur," Alaric acknowledged with a curt nod before his gaze shifted to me.

The intensity of his stare was a physical weight. Three years ago, he had leaked my proprietary data to my biggest competitor, ensuring my first independent venture collapsed before it could launch. He hadn't just beaten me; he had tried to erase me.

"Elara," he murmured. His voice was a low, rich velvet that sent a traitorous shiver down my spine. "You look... determined. I’ve always admired that about you."

"I admire your audacity," I retorted, my voice steady despite the drumming of my heart. "Why are you here, Alaric? Do you want to buy the ruins of my father's company for pennies on the dollar?"

Alaric stepped closer, invading my personal space. I refused to flinch. He smelled of sandalwood and cold ambition. He leaned in, his voice dropping to a whisper that only I could hear.

"I don't want the company, Elara. I want a wife."

I froze. I looked at my father, who avoided my gaze, and then back to the man I hated most in the world.

"Explain," I demanded.

"My grandfather’s will is explicit," Alaric said, stepping back and regaining his professional composure. "To retain full control of Thorne International and inherit the remaining family trust, I must be married by the end of the month. I have no interest in a love match, and I certainly don't trust any of the socialites my mother parades in front of me."

He paused, his eyes scanning me with a possessive hunger that he didn't bother to hide.

"You are intelligent, ambitious, and you have a grudge against me that ensures you'll never actually fall in love with me. You’re the perfect candidate. I provide the capital to clear your father's debts and revitalise Vance Logistics. In exchange, you give me two years of your life and the title of Mrs Thorne."

I felt a surge of nausea mixed with a spark of defiance. He wasn't offering a lifeline; he was offering a golden cage. He wanted to own the woman who had dared to compete with him.

"And if I refuse?"

Alaric shrugged, a cold, cruel movement. "Then I watch your father go bankrupt from my penthouse. It would be a shame to see such a legacy vanish, wouldn't it?"

I looked at my father’s broken expression and then at Alaric’s triumphant smirk. I hated him. I hated that he knew exactly which lever to pull to make me submit. But I was a Vance, and we did not let our empire fall.

"I want a contract," I said, my voice like ice. "Written terms. I keep my professional autonomy. I maintain a separate bank account. And the moment the two years are up, we divorce with a generous settlement."

Alaric’s eyes darkened, a flash of something—desire, or perhaps just the thrill of the hunt—crossing his features.

"Agreed," he said. "But there is one more condition, Elara. One that isn't negotiable."

I narrowed my eyes. "What is it?"

Alaric stepped closer again, his hand grazing my waist—a touch that felt like a brand. "For the world to believe this is real, we must live together. In my house. In the same bedroom."

As he spoke, I noticed a man standing in the doorway behind him—a man with a sinister smile and eyes that looked at me not as a person, but as a target.

And that," Alaric added, glancing at the stranger, "is where the real trouble begins."
