Chapter 4

Penulis: Celebration Zero
I still remembered bumping into Sandra and William at the mall two months ago. What a coincidence it had been.

I had been picking out Sandra's birthday present. Meanwhile, she'd been shopping with William.

I had panicked while William had remained calm. Then, Sandra had flown into a fit of rage. She publicly accused me of stalking her and interfering with her and her client's private discussions.

In the end, I spent the entire day smoking cigarettes outside the mall entrance.

That was why I chose to distance myself from them this time.

The divorce agreement was swiftly amended.

Jasper had some business to attend to, so he gave me further instructions on some of the clauses before leaving.

I sipped on my coffee while basking in the warm sunlight. I then amended the remaining clauses while humming a happy little tune.

"Why don't I drive you back to the firm, Lincoln?" Sandra asked. She was standing by my table with a smile on her face. William was nowhere to be found, much to my surprise.

I glanced at her before wrinkling my nose. "You and your boyfriend sure know how to have a good time."

Sandra was wearing a tight-fitting suit today. There was a beige-colored kerchief tucked in her collar that clearly belonged to William.

The moment Sandra saw it, she tugged it out a little frantically.

"I got distracted while drinking soup earlier, and some of it got onto my collar. Will… William then helped me wipe it off…" Sandra carefully replied.

It didn't bother me too much, though.

"Shall I drive you back to the office?" she asked once more.

I looked at the divorce agreement on my laptop. I was nearly finished amending it at this point.

I then nodded and said apologetically, "Sorry, but I still need a little more time. Could you wait a little longer? I'll be done in a second."

Sandra looked a little cheerful today. She leaned over and glanced at the screen.

"What's this?" she asked.

"A divorce agreement. I'm still amending it," I drawled out as I typed on the keyboard.

I was a little unfamiliar with what was happening right now.

I never dared to make Sandra wait for me whenever she offered to drive me, not even when there was something urgent to deal with.

She'd get incredibly upset otherwise.

This was the first time I made her wait for me.

Sandra's expression changed a little the moment she heard the words "divorce agreement".

I was getting a little stuck while figuring out how to amend the clauses, so I asked, "How do I write a clause that ensures neither party disrupts the other's life after the divorce?"

"Huh? What?" Sandra asked.

Sandra Kimmel, a renowned divorce lawyer in the country, was actually faltering in her own area of expertise.

She even sidestepped my question by asking, "Why is a criminal lawyer like you so interested in divorce agreements?"

I was about to answer her directly when her phone rang. It was William.

I didn't waste any time while Sandra answered the call. I saved the amended agreement and went to see the cafe owner. I asked to borrow their printer.

Happiness bubbled up inside me as I watched the machine print the agreement out.

Outside, Sandra was still on the phone. She was impatiently pacing back and forth. She'd occasionally glance at me through the glass door.

"Sorry to keep you waiting," I said somewhat apologetically after walking out of the cafe.

It was quite the wait. The printer was a little finicky, and it took 15 minutes to print the agreement.

This was probably the longest Sandra had ever waited for me throughout our past few years of marriage.

Sandra quickly hung up and said, "It's completely fine!"

I really liked how formal and distant she was being. I hoped this would continue post-divorce.

No, that wasn't right. I hoped we would never see each other again after the divorce.

I'd quit my job here at Kimmel & Partners and apply to another firm for work. It might be best if I went to another city to work too.

The thought made me smile.

Sandra thought I was feeling happier now that I was smiling, so she smiled nervously as well.

I then placed the divorce agreement on the table and said quietly, "Let's just get this done today. You can sign right here. Don't worry. You'll benefit greatly when it comes to the assets."

Sandra's smile instantly disappeared from her face.

Neither Sandra nor I was like that."You don't need to come visit me every day either," I said. "I use skincare products now, and you won't be able to handle it because of your allergies."But Sandra was still unexpectedly caring toward me while I was handling William's case. Throughout our five years of marriage, this was the kindest she had ever been to me.I had no clue whether she was doing this for my sake or for William's.Olivia took leave from work on the day Howles Inc.'s trial began. She said she wanted to watch her newly-recruited lawyer on the playing field, and that she would fire me if my performance was unsatisfactory.I didn't bother retorting her harsh words. Because I knew her soft heart. The defense procedure went smoothly. There was nothing much I could say in William's defense, as his deeds in the company had been too terrible. In the end, the judge still gave them a hefty fine.William grabbed onto me and lashed out in anger when we left the courtroom."Yo

"Why not?" I cut Sandra's attempt at gaining an upper hand off. "Once you agree to the divorce, I'll do my best to help William out in return. That's a pretty good deal, isn't it?"Sandra opened her mouth to speak, but she couldn't think of anything to say. In the end, she could only furrow her brows and say, "Don't get your feelings involved in this.""You know that's not what's happening here."Sandra knew I cared most about my professional reputation as a lawyer. A lawyer's duty was to uphold justice. If it weren't for the legal aid, I would never have taken on a losing case like this one. Sandra knew very well that William's company was facing a major crisis. She might still have a chance to survive after the case was over. But the financial issues in William's company really were too substantial. Furthermore, since William had no intention of pleading guilty, we were bound to lose this case.So if we actually took his case, who would still believe in the justice we swore t

"Are you trying to make me get a stroke, Lincoln? Why'd you bring Olivia Hilton here?" Sandra demanded.Olivia took a step forward to stand between Sandra and me. "Please watch your tone with my employee, Ms. Kimmel. What right do you have to be berating him right now?"Sandra looked at me, then at Olivia. She sneered and pointed at Olivia before turning her finger to me. "You went to Olivia right after resigning from my firm? You're such an idiot. Do you enjoy being degraded that much?""Hey now." Olivia shifted Sandra's finger, so she was pointing at herself. "Watch it. Lincoln here only ever got degraded when he was working for you."Sandra was already upset with how quiet I was being."How is this any of your business?" she hissed at Olivia.Olivia calmly tucked her hair behind her ear and cleared her throat. "Since my firm's newest lawyer is taking on his first case on his own, I thought to come along with him out of care and consideration for his well-being. Is that so wron

At least Olivia wasn't berating me.I wanted to remind her that speaking too harshly could bring about unnecessary trouble. I opened my mouth to speak, but I hesitated and gave up in the end. After all, Olivia had a point."Yes. We're getting divorced," I said.Olivia froze slightly, taken aback by how straightforward I was.But she quickly came to her senses and smiled. "In all the years I've known you, this is the first time I've seen you make such an intelligent decision."To reward me for making such a decision, Olivia put me through an excruciatingly challenging training program for work. I had to wake up at the crack of dawn and go to work early each day. I only went home to sleep after the firm had closed for the day.But I had to admit that Olivia's highly difficult training was quite effective. I learned many things that I hadn't learned at Kimmel & Partners, even though I'd worked there for so many years. My hectic work schedule soon made Sandra fade from my thoughts.

That would be so embarrassing.I had no choice but to keep diligently applying for jobs in order to live a better life. But I'd spent too long working at Kimmel & Partners. Many of the bigger firms rejected me after seeing that I didn't have a lot of litigation experience in court. Additionally, Sandra's ban was still in effect. All the firms were worried that the reason I'd been fired was that I'd stabbed Kimmel & Partners in the back. This went on for a week. I then finally received a message about an interview.Honestly, I hadn't held any hopes prior to applying to this law firm. The reason was that the firm's founder knew about my and Sandra's relationship. Her and Sandra's enmity began in high school. "Ms. Kimmel is especially terrifying today. Are you alright? Do you need me to rescue you later?" the intern asked.I shook my head, grateful for the intern's kindness.I then went to Sandra's office with her.She slammed the door shut with a loud bang. It made me flinch—the glass door had just been installed. It better not break from how hard Sandra had shut it."What the hell are you going on about, huh?" Sandra hissed. My eyes roamed across the office.William was spritzing his cologne throughout the office as he'd just finished smoking a cigarette.Yet Sandra remained quiet about his actions. She had taken two of her allergy pills. The packaging was sitting quietly in the nearby trash bin. There was some redness on Sandra's neck too. It seemed like her allergic reaction hadn't fully healed yet.She was still suffering from her allergies because of William? Now, of all times? Of course, Sandra would be furious."I'm not going on about anything, Ms. Kimmel. I've just thoug
