Chapter 3

Penulis: Celebration Zero
Yep. The moment Sandra made such a face, the one at fault could only ever be me.

However, all I was doing now was flipping through the contents of my briefcase to search for the divorce agreement.

I didn't manage to find it in the end. I most likely left it at the restaurant earlier.

"What are you looking for now?" Sandra asked. She shifted to her side and leaned over to look.

I hummed but said nothing further. I didn't like how close she was to me right now.

That night, I ditched the master bedroom and slept in the guestroom instead. My sleep was very peaceful and deep.

Considering that I had been seeing Sandra more frequently these two days, I decided to amend the divorce agreement.

I was deep in thought at my desk when Sandra suddenly gave me a phone call. She told me to head to her office and hand in some documents.

I thought about it and decided not to bring up the divorce yet. After all, Sandra hated it when any personal affairs were brought up in her office—especially when it had to do with me.

I hadn't expected William to be there when I arrived.

William was one of our clients' son. He was also a renowned livestream host. He was currently sitting on Sandra's office chair, spritzing some cologne on himself while peering into a mirror.

"You're here, Linc," William called out. There was a somewhat provocative look in his eye as he gazed at me.

I gave him a friendly smile in return, then set the documents on the desk.

I was about to leave when Sandra suddenly called to me.

"Give me my meds, Lincoln."

I glanced at Sandra and instantly understood why.

Sandra was born in wealth and luxury. She had a more delicate constitution than most and was allergic to many things, including certain perfumes.

That was why I could never really buy any skincare products after marrying her. She'd even snap at me if I bought different shampoos.

"Do you even care about me anymore?" she would hiss.

I gradually developed a habit of carrying Sandra's allergy meds with me.

Looks-wise, I was a pretty decent fellow. I just stopped grooming myself as much after marriage. In truth, all I needed was a quick wash.

"I didn't bring it," I said. My eyes were fixed on William's cologne.

I wasn't trying to imitate him. Sandra just happened to be allergic to William's cologne.

"I should start paying more attention to how I look once the divorce goes through," I thought to myself.

Irritation appeared in Sandra's gaze. Her tone was laced with disbelief as she spoke. "How could you not have brought it? You know how I get…"

"That's just wrong, Linc. You ought to be more concerned about Sandra," William cut in.

Sandra grew silent. She probably realized she couldn't comment further in the situation we were in.

After all, I'd just forgotten to bring her allergy medication. I wasn't the one causing her allergies to flare up.

"I'll send you back to retrieve it then," Sandra said.

She immediately felt a little embarrassed upon saying so. It was a little inconvenient to send me home just to get her medication for her. She was the one who needed it, not me.

"Go on your own. I have a lunch meeting," I replied.

I did indeed have a lunch meeting.

Besides Sandra, Jasper was the best lawyer to look for when it came to divorce cases. Since I wanted to amend the divorce agreement, I naturally had to get some help.

It wasn't like I could ask Sandra to amend the agreement, right?

Jasper and I agreed to have lunch at the cafe beside the firm.

I asked him some questions about the details of the agreement as we ate.

"Are you really going to divorce your wife?" Jasper asked. His eyes were sympathetic.

He wasn't aware that Sandra and I were married. In fact, no one in Kimmel & Partners knew.

Sandra hated it when people's private affairs were brought up in the office, after all.

"Yep. She has another man on the side. But it's no big deal. I've wanted to divorce her for some time now anyway," I said.

Just then, I saw Sandra and William walking into the cafe, all smiles.

Sandra instinctively stopped smiling the moment she saw me. She even took a step back away from William.

I shot both of them a polite smile.

I then called the waiter to switch Jasper and me to a table outside the cafe. The sunlight was just nice right now, and this position ensured we'd not be an eyesore to the lovebirds inside.

Neither Sandra nor I was like that."You don't need to come visit me every day either," I said. "I use skincare products now, and you won't be able to handle it because of your allergies."But Sandra was still unexpectedly caring toward me while I was handling William's case. Throughout our five years of marriage, this was the kindest she had ever been to me.I had no clue whether she was doing this for my sake or for William's.Olivia took leave from work on the day Howles Inc.'s trial began. She said she wanted to watch her newly-recruited lawyer on the playing field, and that she would fire me if my performance was unsatisfactory.I didn't bother retorting her harsh words. Because I knew her soft heart. The defense procedure went smoothly. There was nothing much I could say in William's defense, as his deeds in the company had been too terrible. In the end, the judge still gave them a hefty fine.William grabbed onto me and lashed out in anger when we left the courtroom."Yo

"Why not?" I cut Sandra's attempt at gaining an upper hand off. "Once you agree to the divorce, I'll do my best to help William out in return. That's a pretty good deal, isn't it?"Sandra opened her mouth to speak, but she couldn't think of anything to say. In the end, she could only furrow her brows and say, "Don't get your feelings involved in this.""You know that's not what's happening here."Sandra knew I cared most about my professional reputation as a lawyer. A lawyer's duty was to uphold justice. If it weren't for the legal aid, I would never have taken on a losing case like this one. Sandra knew very well that William's company was facing a major crisis. She might still have a chance to survive after the case was over. But the financial issues in William's company really were too substantial. Furthermore, since William had no intention of pleading guilty, we were bound to lose this case.So if we actually took his case, who would still believe in the justice we swore t

"Are you trying to make me get a stroke, Lincoln? Why'd you bring Olivia Hilton here?" Sandra demanded.Olivia took a step forward to stand between Sandra and me. "Please watch your tone with my employee, Ms. Kimmel. What right do you have to be berating him right now?"Sandra looked at me, then at Olivia. She sneered and pointed at Olivia before turning her finger to me. "You went to Olivia right after resigning from my firm? You're such an idiot. Do you enjoy being degraded that much?""Hey now." Olivia shifted Sandra's finger, so she was pointing at herself. "Watch it. Lincoln here only ever got degraded when he was working for you."Sandra was already upset with how quiet I was being."How is this any of your business?" she hissed at Olivia.Olivia calmly tucked her hair behind her ear and cleared her throat. "Since my firm's newest lawyer is taking on his first case on his own, I thought to come along with him out of care and consideration for his well-being. Is that so wron

At least Olivia wasn't berating me.I wanted to remind her that speaking too harshly could bring about unnecessary trouble. I opened my mouth to speak, but I hesitated and gave up in the end. After all, Olivia had a point."Yes. We're getting divorced," I said.Olivia froze slightly, taken aback by how straightforward I was.But she quickly came to her senses and smiled. "In all the years I've known you, this is the first time I've seen you make such an intelligent decision."To reward me for making such a decision, Olivia put me through an excruciatingly challenging training program for work. I had to wake up at the crack of dawn and go to work early each day. I only went home to sleep after the firm had closed for the day.But I had to admit that Olivia's highly difficult training was quite effective. I learned many things that I hadn't learned at Kimmel & Partners, even though I'd worked there for so many years. My hectic work schedule soon made Sandra fade from my thoughts.

That would be so embarrassing.I had no choice but to keep diligently applying for jobs in order to live a better life. But I'd spent too long working at Kimmel & Partners. Many of the bigger firms rejected me after seeing that I didn't have a lot of litigation experience in court. Additionally, Sandra's ban was still in effect. All the firms were worried that the reason I'd been fired was that I'd stabbed Kimmel & Partners in the back. This went on for a week. I then finally received a message about an interview.Honestly, I hadn't held any hopes prior to applying to this law firm. The reason was that the firm's founder knew about my and Sandra's relationship. Her and Sandra's enmity began in high school. Theirs was a tale of competing for the spot of prettiest girl in school, where the firm's founder happened to lose.…Olivia Hilton used to be in the same class as Sandra in high school. "Ms. Kimmel is especially terrifying today. Are you alright? Do you need me to rescue you later?" the intern asked.I shook my head, grateful for the intern's kindness.I then went to Sandra's office with her.She slammed the door shut with a loud bang. It made me flinch—the glass door had just been installed. It better not break from how hard Sandra had shut it."What the hell are you going on about, huh?" Sandra hissed. My eyes roamed across the office.William was spritzing his cologne throughout the office as he'd just finished smoking a cigarette.Yet Sandra remained quiet about his actions. She had taken two of her allergy pills. The packaging was sitting quietly in the nearby trash bin. There was some redness on Sandra's neck too. It seemed like her allergic reaction hadn't fully healed yet.She was still suffering from her allergies because of William? Now, of all times? Of course, Sandra would be furious."I'm not going on about anything, Ms. Kimmel. I've just thoug
