Chapter 1

Lily Anderson was the first to regain her composure.

"Since you've caught us, I'm just going to come clean.

"Julian doesn't have a family, and he can't be alone in the West. You've always been a tough kid. I believe you'll be able to live a good life independently."

Julian Smith grabbed her arm with teary eyes.

I did not cry.

Instead, I pointed at the conversation history displayed on the screen.

"Who came up with those fake application forms?"

Lily answered without any hesitation, "I did."

"Who was the one who wanted to play truth or dare?"

Julian's eyes flickered.

Maddie Harold immediately shielded him.

"We came up with the idea together. Don't even think about attacking Julian."

I nodded, then I looked at Lily.

"When you agreed to be my girlfriend last night, was it part of the plan too?"

Lily paused.

"You won't get into a long-distance relationship.

"If I hadn't agreed to your request, you wouldn't have signed the application form."

She said it matter-of-factly. She did not even seem guilty in the least.

Julian teared up and suddenly grabbed the phone from Silvia Brown.

"This is all my fault. I'll change my college application now.

"I'll go to West University with Luca, and the rest of you can stay in the north."

The four of them immediately surrounded him.

April Carpenter immediately took the phone away.

"You've received the offer letter from North University. Why are you changing it now?"

"But what about Luca?"

Julian was sobbing violently.

"He'll be going to such a faraway place all by himself. He must be very upset."

Lily took a few tissue papers and wiped his tears away.

"He's been very independent since he was a child. He'll be able to live a good life anywhere.

"Your health isn't the best, and you've never left North City before. Don't jeopardize your future over this."

I stood a few steps away as I watched them comforting him.

So, that was the true reason.

It was not because Julian could not live in West City.

It was because they were worried that he would suffer, so they would rather let me take the brunt of it.

Silvia pushed her glasses further up her nose bridge as she spoke in her characteristically calm manner.

"Luca, we may have been able to do this better, but it still gives everyone the best outcome.

"You're going to the university that's most suited for you, and we're staying back to accompany Julian.

"No one's future is compromised."

I laughed.

"Should I thank you then?"

Maddie's face fell as she heard the sarcasm in my voice.

"You were also keen to go to West University. Otherwise, why didn't you turn down the professor directly when he reached out to you that many times?

"We just helped you solidify your decision."

Indeed, I had wanted to go.

West University's ongoing project was my childhood dream.

But I did not want to leave my friends behind. That was why I rejected their offers two times.

I even thought of giving up my favorite research topic in order to remain in North City with them.

However, there was no point bringing these up any longer.

I picked up the offer letter from the table.

Lily subconsciously stopped me.

"Where are you going?"

"I'm going home."

"What about us?"

I looked at her.

"Is there even an us?"

Her expression froze.

"Luca, don't say things that you don't mean.

"I agreed to date you because I wanted you to sign that application form, but it wasn't an empty promise. I'll be with you until college starts, and I'll take time out to visit you in the future too.

"Aren't I already giving you what you want?"

It turned out that to her, dating me for two months was a very generous act.

Julian urged me softly.

"Luca, Lily really cares a lot about you.

"After you slept last night, she even put a blanket on you."

I almost laughed.

After they lied to me and made me sign my form, she threw a blanket over me.

Did I have to count my lucky stars for that?

"Then, I hope you'll be together forever."

I took out my keychain and showed it to Julian.

"Don't you want our childhood?

"I'll give this to you too."

Julian did not dare to take it.

Lily's frown deepened.

"What's wrong with you today?

"Didn't you always say that the five of us will be friends forever?"

"In the past, maybe."

I turned to leave.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was a text message from the professor, Pete Luther.

[There will be a car going to pick you up from North City in two days' time.]

[Luca, please confirm your early admission to the research team.]

I pressed the confirm button.

The research was highly confidential. After I reached the research center, my phone and personal devices would be taken away.

No one would be able to locate me in a short period of time.

I switched off my phone and muted the five-person group chat that had been with me for the past eighteen years.

They thought that I would return to them after I digested my anger and sadness, just like I did before.

That was not going to happen.

On the second day after the press release, my parents threw me a welcome back party. They did not invite Lily and the group. My father hugged me for a really long time. My mother burnt three different dishes in the kitchen, so we ordered delivery at the end. During dinner, my father suddenly asked, "Are you going to return to North City?"I shook my head. "The second phase of the project is still located in West City.""Is it going to be another five years?""It might be even longer than that." My mother paused. Finally, she said, "Do what you like to do. "You'll always have a place back home." I teared up. "Alright."Before I left, I went back to the neighborhood. The willow tree still stood there. The hole that used to contain the memory capsule was already filled. On top of the spot was a brand-new metal box. There was a note on the box. [For Luca]I did not open it. Instead, I walked past it. Lily walked out from behind the willow tree. She

In the fifth year, the project finally reached its final stage. I was twenty-three years old. I had grown from the youngest team member to the project leader of a core model. Before the results were released, the research center allowed us to contact the outside world for the very last time. The moment I switched on my phone, messages came flooding in. Lily had sent more than two thousand messages to me. The first one was: Luca, stop with your nonsense. The last text message was from the day before. [I'm not waiting for your forgiveness.][I just want to know if you're safe.]Every time Maddie won a medal, she would upload a photo. Silvia uploaded all the recovered videos. As for April, she edited a new growth documentary. She named the documentary: Empty Space. The cover photo was the uneven bump underneath the willow tree from where we buried the memory capsules. I watched all of them at one go. Then, I deleted them all with a single tap. It was not ou

It was busier than I had imagined at the research center in West City. In my first week, I went to the desert test base with Professor Luther. It was scorching hot during the day, and freezing during the night. The wind constantly blew sand about in the air. My senior from the same project, Mason Reid, passed me a scarf. "Do you regret your decision?"I shook my head. "No, I don't." "Do you miss home?"I pondered for a while. "I do miss my parents.""Anyone else?""There's no one else." Mason did not ask any further. In the third month of the project, my model succeeded on its first try. The entire team cheered for me at 3 a.m.. Professor Luther took out a soda can that was half-buried in the sand. "Due to limited resources, this will be our champagne." I took a sip. It tasted better than the champagne we had at Julian's party. Six months later, my parents contacted me via the research center's dedicated phone line. My father was sobbing. "You lo

The next day, the news about my early admission spread in school. The principal personally announced that I had joined a national-level research project due to my excellent results. It was not a regular admission. Instead, it was a strict selection. I was the only one admitted from North City. The boys who had bullied me the day before turned pale. One of them even went to Lily. "We were just joking. "We didn't know he's so petty to just leave like that."Lily glanced at him. "Who kicked the water bucket over?"The smile froze on his face. "I slipped." "What about the camera?""It was an accident too." Lily grabbed the phone from his hand and threw it into the fountain. He screamed at her. "You're crazy!" "I slipped." She returned his words to him. However, even after doing that, she still did not feel happy. It was because when I stood here the day before, she had not walked over. It was too late for her to do that for me. Maddie rummaged thr

Lily and the rest rushed to the research center's base in North City. The staff member, Ben Swift, asked, "Who are you to Luca?"She answered, "I'm his girlfriend."Ben retrieved my profile. "You are not on his emergency contact list." Lily froze. "He's mad at me. "Please tell me where he is.""I'm sorry, I can't tell you that." Maddie slammed the table. "We grew up together!" Ben looked up. "Then, you should know that he's joining the project team today." The four of them fell silent. They did not know. When they were flipping through my room yesterday, none of them had read the agreement. Silvia forced herself to calm down. "We're not asking for his exact location."But could you help us to pass something to him?""No." "When will we be able to contact him?""After he completes his five-year lockdown period. It also depends on the project's progress."Lily stood still for a very long time. "When he left, why didn't he ask us?"Ben frowned. "L

After the car drove onto the secluded path, they took my phone away. "From now on, you'll be identified only by your project number. "Your previous identity, personal relationships, and communication records will all be put on hold."I nodded. "Understood." Outside the window, the cityscape slowly turned into wasteland. I leaned against the car seat. For the first time in my life, I did not have to worry about sudden text messages instructing me to deliver items, edit videos, or clean up their messes. It was strangely quiet. At the same time, in North City, Julian's party had already started. Maddie was standing on the ladder as she hung the last string of fairy lights. Silvia was adjusting the settings on the projector. April cut their cake. Lily glanced at the time. It was 7:05 p.m.I still did not show up. She sent me a text message. [Where are you?]The text message did not get through. She was dumbfounded. Then, she tried again. [Luca, blocking m
