Chapter 1

I stood in the rain, silently watching my fiancé, Carlo Vitale.

I watched as he personally slid the wedding ring onto my stepsister Sophia’s finger.

Sophia was wearing a custom-made designer wedding gown and smiling beautifully.

The moment the ring was on her hand, Carlo pulled her into his arms without hesitation.

Members of the family surrounded them, along with so-called friends I once knew, all cheering them on.

They kissed for nearly ten minutes. Only when Sophia was so weak in the knees that she could barely stand did Carlo finally pull away, breathless.

Rain slid down my hair, blurring my vision.

However, I could not shake off the image of the man I had loved for twelve years kissing the woman who used to bully me.

Memories surged back like a tide.

I first met Carlo when I was sixteen.

He was the son of my father’s business partner. He was only eighteen at the time, but he was already carrying the aura of a future don.

That day, my father was about to hit me again. Carlo stepped in front of me. A broken glass bottle slashed a long wound across his arm.

Blood ran down his arm, but he only turned to me and said, “Don’t be afraid.”

No one remembered my eighteenth birthday.

He was the only one who stayed by my side the entire night.

He did not say much, just draped his coat over my shoulders.

When the light of dawn came, he said, “Elena, I’ll protect you from now on.”

At twenty-two, I graduated from university.

He appeared in the last row of the auditorium, holding a bouquet of white roses.

He confessed, “I like you. Be with me. I’ll protect you from now on.”

I thought he loved me.

It turned out it was all just my wishful thinking.

Sophia threw the bridal bouquet.

Everyone rushed forward to catch it.

That was when I realized my family was at the wedding, too.

My younger brother Michael, whom I once risked my life to protect, was standing there and smiling. His entire attention was fixed on Sophia—the same woman who once tormented him.

He had already forgotten how we almost died at the hands of Sophia and her mother years ago.

I still remembered it clearly.

I was only ten when Sophia and her mother first came into our home.

They acted gentle and kind in front of my father, but the moment he left, they locked Michael and me in the basement.

Michael had a fever, so I begged them for medicine. Sophia’s mother kicked me in the chest and said, “Your mother is dead. Why don’t you join her in Hell?”

Sophia stood beside her, putting on a sweet smile. “Please don’t blame my mother, Elena. You were just being disobedient.”

One day, Michael fell and hit his head, causing him to lose his memory.

It was Sophia who pushed him, but she cried and blamed me instead.

When Michael woke up, he remembered only the one month Sophia had taken care of him, and from then on, he was completely devoted to her.

I told Carlo all of this.

He thought I was lying.

“Congratulations to the bride and groom!”

Michael and the others shouted.

As he spoke, fireworks were lit outside the church.

Under the sky full of fireworks, Carlo lifted Sophia into his arms.

The crowd roared with cheers all around.

I stood in the drizzle, suffocating in despair.

I dialed Michael’s number.

The brother who once swore he would always stand by me glanced at the screen and hung up immediately.

I did not stop. I called Carlo.

The moment he saw it was me, his face turned cold.

He was about to hang up, but Sophia whispered something in his ear. Only then did he reluctantly answer.

I asked in a soft voice, “Where are you?”

He sneered in front of everyone.

“What, checking up on me again? You’re pregnant, yet you still can’t behave? Elena, are you that desperate for a man?

“Can’t you live without a man?

“I already told you, I’m with Sophia because of some family business. Only someone as filthy-minded as you can twist everything into something dirty!”

Every word cut like a knife.

The last thread of hope in my heart made me choke out,

“But Carlo, it’s my birthday today…”

He promised me that he would spend my birthday with me no matter what happened.

Thus, even though he was two hundred miles away, I changed trains several times and walked a mile in the rain just to find him.

Carlo seemed to finally remember.

Silence fell on the other end of the line.

Before he could speak, the phone was snatched away.

“Can you stop being so disgusting, Elena?” snapped Michael.

“Do you think everyone is as obsessed with this nonsense as you are?

“Stop causing trouble! Do you even know how important today is?

“Stop doing stupid things and making others clean up your mess!”

He hung up.

Sophia leaned into Carlo’s arms, smiling gently.

She patted Michael’s head.

“All right. You all know what kind of person Elena is.

“Today is the most important day of my life. Be good, okay? Smile.”

That was all it took to calm Michael down.

The group headed back, laughing and celebrating.

The noise faded, leaving me alone in the dark, silent night.

I felt discarded and unwanted.

I wiped away my last tear.

Then, I turned and walked away.

I no longer wanted the man whose cold heart I had tried to warm for twelve years.

Epilogue: Carlo’s Final LetterCarlo hid this letter in a file he left with his lawyer, with instructions that it be delivered to me only after he was cremated.Following his wishes, the lawyer brought me the letter one week after his funeral. It was without an envelope, tied only with a black ribbon. When I opened it, soft rain was falling outside the window, just like the night my mother died years ago.I read it word by word, my fingers brushing over the signature at the bottom—the one that had once made my heart race, and later shattered it.[Elena.][If you’re reading this, it means I’m gone.][I don’t ask for your forgiveness.][I only wanted to tell you a few things.][First, I went to visit our child. The burial plot was in my name, but I’ve transferred it to you. I’m sorry, but I wanted him to know he wasn’t unloved.][Second, I found out the truth. Your mother was driven to her death by Sophia’s family. I made them pay. Still, I know it’s not enough. It will never b

Three years later.I attended the Global Documentary Awards as an award recipient. My documentary told the stories of forgotten women around the world—from widows in Sicily, refugees in the Middle East, abused wives, and trafficked girls. The award citation read: [Through Her Lens, the Voiceless Speak.]I stood on stage and said, “I was once one of those silent women, but I am not anymore. I hope I can continue speaking for more women in the future.”After the ceremony, I signed autographs one by one for the fans who came to congratulate me.Over these three years, I continued my work in humanitarian aid and feminism.I traveled the world almost constantly with my colleagues, documenting and reporting on different cases.By the time I finished work, it was already late at night. When I returned to my villa in the city center, I was so exhausted I could barely keep my eyes open. The moment I noticed a man standing in front of my gate, I instinctively tightened my grip on my s

The next day, I went out to attend my best friend’s wedding. She had been my closest friend since high school.Back then, when Sophia manipulated the whole class into isolating and bullying me, she was the only one who stayed by my side.During my two days back in the country, I also heard from various people about what had happened to Sophia and her parents. My friend told me that half a year ago, Carlo learned the truth and destroyed Sophia’s face after I left.As for Sophia’s parents, they tried to continue making a scene, but Carlo did not give them the chance. He made them disappear from New York entirely. After finishing her story, my friend heaved a sigh and said earnestly, “That’s why you can’t do bad things. Karma really does come around.”I smiled, took a bite of mousse, and replied, “Yeah, exactly.”She leaned in curiously when she saw how calm I was.“You don’t know this, but Carlo went crazy looking for you that day. He asked everyone who knew you.“When he found

Six months later.I sat in the Lanza family estate in Sicily, watching the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea.In these past six months, Don Lanza had treated me like his own daughter.Everyone in the family called me ‘Principessa’.Here, I learned the rules of how Sicilians do business and how to protect myself in this world.More importantly, I learned how to let go.I started making documentaries. My first project was about a woman in Sicily who had suffered years of domestic abuse. In the end, she killed her husband and spent ten years in prison. On the day she was released, she said, “I’m finally free.”I cried behind the camera. It was because I knew I was finally free too. That evening, I returned to my room and received a call from Don Lanza.“Elena, your mother’s memorial day is coming up. You should go back and visit.”I took off my sunglasses and let out a soft laugh.“All right. I’ll go back tomorrow.”He was silent for a moment, then said, “Carlo Vit

Sophia’s mother snapped completely, screaming hysterically, “Stop! Let go of my daughter, you murderers! Sophia has always been innocent! You two are ones who hurt Elena! What does it have to do with us?!”Carlo’s entire body trembled at her words. Then, he let out a bitter laugh and nodded.“Yeah, we were always the ones hurting Elena.”He thought back to that day when he pushed Elena to the ground. The bullet pierced her abdomen. She was still looking at him when she fell. However, he never once looked back.A sharp, ruthless glint suddenly surfaced in his eyes.He made a call to the family council’s encrypted line.Three days later, the Vitale family council held a closed-door meeting.Carlo submitted everything from the USB drive. There were records from the church school, fake financial documents, and recorded conversations of Sophia’s family plotting together. The council ruled that all of the Rossi family patriarch’s assets would be absorbed by the family. My father

Sophia’s mother looked especially smug and sneered.“Our Sophia is so smart, pretending to be sick and keeping that idiot Carlo completely fooled!“He’s a Mafia don, yet he can’t even tell whether a medical report is real or fake.”Her tone was sharp and vicious. She exchanged a glance with her husband and scoffed.“Carlo’s just pathetic. He threw away Elena, who loved him for twelve years, just to cling to my daughter.“Tsk! My girl really does have charm.”Sophia’s father took a sip of red wine and added arrogantly, “That girl Elena was doomed from the start. Just like her mother, she was born to suffer through life.“If her mother had just handed the money over back then, she wouldn’t have been driven to jump off that building, and we wouldn’t have had to maintain that act to fool that idiot Michael.”Sophia rolled her eyes impatiently. Her voice was full of disgust.“Why isn’t that b*tch Elena here yet?“If she dares run from the wedding, I’ll make sure she regrets it.
