Chapter 3

Author: Afterlife Riot
Astrid's POV

Leah resigned almost immediately and became Jacob's personal assistant that very afternoon.

To celebrate her new job, the three of them rented out an entire lodge for her.

I frowned at the invitation on my phone and declined without hesitation. "I'm not going."

Leah burst into tears again, and Jacob was so desperate to comfort her that he came straight to my house.

He cornered me outside my bedroom. "Can you stop being so difficult for once?"

I sighed. "What exactly have I done? Am I not even allowed to say I don't want to go?"

Over the years, whenever I refused to go along with Leah's wishes or she started crying, I was automatically to blame. No one ever bothered asking what I wanted or whether I was happy.

When it was time to take our graduation photos, the three of them bought flowers for Leah but forgot about me.

Leah insisted on giving me her flowers, but I refused to accept them. Rather than let her get upset at the sight of me, they simply excluded me from the graduation photos altogether.

It was a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, and I didn't even get to be part of it.

Even our trip to the amusement park for my birthday had been Jacob's idea because Leah liked it, not because it was somewhere I wanted to go.

But to Jacob, the exhaustion in my tone was just another sign that I was being unreasonable.

He pressed his lips together and tried to speak as calmly as possible.

"Leah's a small-town girl. She's finally found a group of friends she can count on. If you don't come, she's going to take it personally. Astrid, I'm begging you. Please, just come with us."

I stared at him in disbelief.

I'd never imagined that Jacob, who'd always had everything handed to him, would ever have to beg anyone for something.

Yet, here he was, begging me to do something for another woman rather than for me, his own fiancee.

I lowered my head as tears blurred my vision.

"Fine."

He breathed a sigh of relief, but just as he was about to leave, he snatched the emerald pendant from my nightstand.

Grandma Hilda had left it to me before she passed away. Every night, I held it in my hand until I fell asleep.

"I'll hang on to this for now. You'll get it back when you show up tonight," said Jacob.

My heart sank. "Do you even know how much that pendant means to me?"

"Of course I do. That's why I know you'll actually show up if I have it. Otherwise, Leah will just get even more upset."

With that, he turned and walked away.

I watched him leave, and before I knew it, tears were streaming down my face.

Jacob knew that Grandma Hilda had raised me. He knew that when she passed away, I'd cried so much that I developed pneumonia and nearly died myself.

Yet, he'd still taken the one thing she'd left me, all for Leah's sake.

I squeezed my eyes shut and wiped away my tears, determined that I'd never shed another one over him.

That evening, I arrived at the lodge to find it decorated like something straight out of a fairy tale.

Leah immediately came over and took my hand when she saw me.

"Astrid! I knew you weren't really mad at me," she exclaimed.

"Yeah."

I quietly slipped my hand out of hers and walked over to Jacob. "Give me my pendant back."

He frowned impatiently. "What's the rush? If you start demanding it back now, Leah will know you didn't want to come. I'll give it back when the party's over."

Caleb glanced at me. "Astrid, you're acting like a child."

Meanwhile, Lucas stood off to the side, deliberately blocking Leah's view of us so she wouldn't see us arguing and get upset.

My throat tightened. I still hadn't fully recovered from my fever, and even swallowing was painful.

Meanwhile, Leah sat down on a chair and blinked expectantly.

"It's time!"

Jacob immediately pushed me aside and brought out a custom-made cake. "Look, Leah! That's us on the cake. We'll always be here for you."

Caleb and Lucas had each prepared extravagant gifts for her, one giving her a house and the other a car. They seemed determined to give her everything she could ever want.

Leah was so touched that she couldn't stop crying.

I glanced at the cake and saw four little figurines on top. Once again, I wasn't one of them.

But it didn't matter anymore.

I looked away, knowing I had zero desire to be part of their little group.

Astrid's POVI listened to his apology in silence, my face expressionless. While Jacob could barely contain his emotions, I felt nothing at all. He seemed to notice the difference, and his expression grew increasingly dejected. After a moment, I gave a small nod."Okay. I've heard you."I turned to leave, but he caught me by the wrist. His grip was gentle, nothing like the way he'd grabbed me when he tried to force me to apologize to Leah. But that only made the irony sting."Please don't go," he said, looking down at me with desperation in his eyes. "Astrid, I don't want us to break up."He lowered his head and pleaded, "I've already fired Leah, and I promise I'll never have anything to do with her again. Please believe me."I looked at him in silence for a couple of seconds before pulling my hand away. That seemed to send him into a panic."I don't believe you," I said. "You promised you'd protect me for the rest of your life. Did you think that promise would expire after

Astrid's POVMeanwhile, on the other side of the world, I'd just landed in Meryn. My phone was flooded with messages from all three of them. Jacob alone had sent me more than a hundred, but I didn't bother replying to a single one. Instead, I blocked their numbers and deleted everything.I'd left in such a hurry that I'd almost forgotten about those three jerks.Shortly afterward, Mom video-called me."Those boys came looking for you. They went to the lodge first, and Jacob even got into a car accident."I merely nodded. In the past, I would've dropped everything to rush to Jacob's side and take care of him, but now, I simply acknowledged what Mom had told me.Whether he lived or died had nothing to do with me anymore."Oh, and I've officially called off your engagement with Jacob," Mom added."Got it. Thanks, Mom."After hanging up, I headed to the house I'd purchased in Meryn before my departure. I unpacked my belongings and finally breathed a sigh of relief. That mise

Third-Person POVIn that instant, Jacob felt as though all the air had been knocked out of him. His chest tightened so painfully that he could barely breathe."Astrid…"Caleb and Lucas stared at the stretcher in disbelief. They couldn't comprehend how someone who'd been perfectly fine just the day before could suddenly be gone.If something really had happened to Astrid, how could they ever make up for what they'd done? How were they supposed to live with themselves?Jacob rushed toward the stretcher, his eyes red as he reached out with trembling hands and lifted the sheet. But when he saw an unfamiliar face beneath it, he let out a breath of relief. His knees nearly buckled, and Caleb and Lucas hurried to steady him."Thank goodness it's not Astrid."Something seemed to occur to Caleb then. "Wait, what if Astrid found her own way home after we left last night?"Jacob shook his head. He didn't know, but he desperately hoped Caleb was right. The rescue teams eventually finish

Third-Person POVThe group chat was dead silent. After a long while, Caleb and Lucas finally responded."Wait, did Astrid get in the car last night?""I can't remember. I wasn't paying attention."Jacob was already in his car when he saw their messages, and his breathing grew unsteady. He'd forgotten about Astrid, too. He hadn't even noticed that she was missing.Ever since he'd seen the news about the mudslide that morning, he'd had a terrible feeling that something was wrong. He called Astrid three times, but she didn't answer any of his calls. That had never happened before. He squeezed his eyes shut, his lips pressed tightly together as he struggled to contain his growing panic.Suddenly, his gaze fell on the car's dashcam. He immediately pulled up the footage from the previous night. There, in the pouring rain, he saw Caleb and Lucas helping Leah into the car. Then, he watched himself drive away, leaving Astrid standing outside alone in the storm. The second he saw th

Astrid's POVI was sitting off to the side when a text popped up on my phone, reminding me to check in for my flight the following morning.Jacob came over and glanced down at my screen."What are you looking at?" he asked.I immediately locked my phone. "Nothing."Then, I looked at Leah, who was laughing happily, and held out my hand. "Your precious Leah is happy now. Can I have my pendant back?"Jacob's brows drew together almost imperceptibly at my choice of words, but his expression relaxed a moment later. He handed the emerald pendant back to me.Just as I reached for it, Leah slammed into me, knocking the pendant out of my reach. It hit the ground with a sharp crack and shattered. My eyes widened in horror. I stared at the broken pieces scattered across the floor before slowly crouching down to pick them up.Leah immediately bit her lip and apologized, "I'm so sorry, Astrid!
