Chapter 1

"Eleanor Malone, stop pretending to be dead! Get up!" Frank Martin shouted.

Everyone in the climbing group was a friend of Henry, Henry Malone. Frank, who was closest to Henry, was kicking my shoulder. "Do you think lying in the mud and pretending to faint will make Henry carry you home like he used to? Stop being so dumb!"

The force of his kick sent my body rolling a few feet forward. My face turned pale.

The werewolves around us immediately burst into laughter.

"Oh my God, she's even holding her breath! She's acting way too well! If I didn't know werewolves couldn't possibly be this weak, I'd almost believe her!" someone exclaimed.

Someone else took the opportunity to mock me even further.

"I bet she's just trying to slack off. She was dragging her feet the entire way up the slope. Henry is the strongest warrior in our pack. How could he have a biological sister who's this weak?

"Ella is so much better. Even without sharing the same bloodline, she's a hundred times stronger than Eleanor."

One insult followed another, but none of them knew the truth.

After spending years lost out there on my own, my wolf spirit had been severely hurt. Not only had I developed asthma, but I had also lost the ability to shift into a wolf and the power to heal myself.

Frank stared at my tightly shut eyes and pointed at the sky before cursing out loud. "How much longer are you going to hold us up? A downpour can happen without warning up here in the mountains. If something happens, don't expect us to help you!"

After hearing their complaints, Henry's expression darkened.

Ella Malone quietly moved closer to him. She put on a look of pure innocence and asked, "Henry, is Eleanor mad at me?"

This was happening again.

Ever since I had been brought back to my family, Ella had targeted me at every opportunity. She was wary I would steal all the love and attention she had always enjoyed, but I had never wanted to compete with her for anything.

She blinked and spoke in a wounded tone. "I only threw her medication away because I wanted to push her a little, help her break her dependence on it, and get her to awaken her wolf spirit sooner. How could she retaliate against us by throwing a tantrum?"

Henry frowned and walked toward my body. He seemed irritated.

Seeing the disgust in his expression, I instinctively shivered.

Henry hadn't always been like this.

When I first returned to the pack, he'd draped a warm cloak over my shoulders. He'd held me gently and promised that, even if our parents had passed away, he would make up for all the love I had missed during the eighteen years we'd been apart.

Back then, I thought I had finally found the family I had always dreamed of.

Everything changed two days ago when he caught me using my asthma inhaler.

He stared at the medication in my hand, and his expression shifted from shock to profound disappointment. "Eleanor, you have the blood of werewolves running through your veins. How can you rely on medication to survive like some fragile human?"

From that moment on, every time he frowned, I trembled in fear.

I was terrified he would despise me and send me away.

So I pushed myself to the limit in every test he arranged for me. I desperately tried to prove that I wasn't useless.

But hadn't I already died?

Apparently, even the dead could still feel afraid.

Henry stopped in front of my body and stared at my bluish face.

A flicker of doubt crossed his eyes, but it disappeared almost immediately.

"Eleanor, I'm running out of patience. I'm counting to three. You'd better get up!" His voice was cold and had an unmistakable menace to it.

"One!"

A cold gust of wind swept past, turning my lips even more purple.

"Two!"

Ella chimed in to urge me on. "Eleanor, come on. We still have a long way to go. The world doesn't revolve around you."

No one answered her. The silence was eerie.

"Three!"

The countdown ended, but I remained motionless.

The werewolves in the group burst into laughter. They cast curious looks at Henry.

"Henry, this loser doesn't even listen to you anymore. What are you going to do?"

Henry thought I was deliberately defying him and trying to humiliate him in front of his friends.

Fury surged through him, and he suddenly lost his temper. "How long are you going to keep this up?"

He bent down abruptly and lifted my entire body off the ground, but it went completely limp and slipped right through his fingers.

The moment my body fell, Henry's movements suddenly halted.

After the trial, snow began falling from the sky and blanketed everything in white.Henry, who had thin clothing on, stumbled through the biting wind and climbed back up the mountain to the gorge where our lives had been separated by my death. He threw himself onto the snow-covered ground and frantically began digging. His bare hands turned purple and cracked from the cold, but he seemed completely oblivious to the pain.At last, after digging for what felt like an eternity, he found the backpack that had been kicked away.He immediately reached inside and pulled out the bottle of asthma medication that no longer had any use."Eleanor. I found it. The medicine is right here."As if holding a priceless treasure, he carefully pressed the bottle against his chest and burst into tears."Please come back. I'll never force you to become stronger again. Eleanor! Please just take one puff of your medicine! Open your eyes and look at me!"His anguished cries echoed through the empty go

Andy wheeled my body away. Meanwhile Ella, Frank, and the others were escorted away by the werewolf warriors for investigation.Henry was the last one to leave. His pale lips trembled violently as he lowered his head and muttered to himself. He sank into memories of the past."Eleanor, the day we brought you back to the pack, it was snowing so heavily outside. You were wearing tattered clothes and shivering from the cold. I held you tightly in my arms and swore to Moon Goddess that day."I swore I would protect you for the rest of your life in Mom and Dad's place, and that I would never let anyone hurt you again."He laughed and cried at the empty air. He looked like a lunatic who had completely lost his mind."But what did I do instead? I looked down on you for being weak. I despised you for having asthma."I even forced you to climb that mountain for training and watched with my own eyes as your medication was kicked away."As he spoke, he suddenly lifted his hand and slapped

Those words made Henry collapse to his knees.A scene suddenly flashed through his mind.On the mountain, I had been lying on the ground while desperately stretching out my hand toward the backpack filled with medication.Ella had kicked the backpack away. She even ran over to Henry to take credit for it.He had watched coldly from the sidelines. His face was full of disgust as he forced me to get up even as I struggled to breathe. He stood there and watched as I closed my eyes for the last time.Henry suddenly turned around. His eyes were bloodshot. "Ella!"As his wolf spirit let out a furious, uncontrollable roar, his wolf ears and tail emerged. He lunged at Ella, tackled her to the ground, and clamped both hands around her throat. "It was you! You kicked her backpack away! You stopped me from saving her! This is all your fault!"Ella's mouth was wide open as she struggled to breathe. She frantically pounded at Henry's arms. When she saw the murderous intent in his eyes, she

The storm grew more violent by the minute.Henry continued cursing under his breath, but his pace involuntarily quickened.Ella followed behind him while complaining incessantly. "Eleanor is so inconsiderate! She's forcing us to waste all this time chasing after her!"Frank showed an expression of eager anticipation. "Let's see how Eleanor gets herself out of this one. She even dared to deceive the rescue warriors. The pack will definitely lock her up as punishment!"Henry remained silent. His lips were pursed from the rage he tried to suppress. He appeared calm, but his fists kept clenching and unclenching. It was obvious he was panicking on the inside.A werewolf's keen instincts were sounding an alarm in Henry's mind. He had a vague, unsettling feeling that he was about to lose something precious.I floated above him and looked at him. He looked like a ridiculous fool.'Henry, do you really have no idea what you're afraid of?''Your hands are trembling. How much longer are

Henry's eyes went wide, and he staggered backward. "Her corpse? That's impossible!"The captain bared his hand to reveal an identification tag. "We found this on the corpse. Eleanor's name is written on it. Don't you recognize it?"Henry's eyes welled up with tears. Although he desperately refused to believe it, his body began trembling uncontrollably."Eleanor is my sister. How could she possibly be dead? The landslide hadn't even happened when we evacuated. She had a full set of emergency supplies, so she must have escaped long ago. Did you maybe identify the wrong person?"Ella emerged from behind Henry and chipped in with a shrill voice. "Exactly! You've all been fooled! Eleanor is good at scheming. She must have been afraid Henry would discover she'd sneaked away and punish her."That's why she deliberately planted her identification tag on some unidentified shewolf's body. That way, you'd come here and intimidate us! You have all been manipulated by her!"The captain's expr

Three hours passed in the blink of an eye.Inside the pack's treehouse, the scene was completely different.Everyone was gathered around the warm fire. They were eating barbecued meat and congratulating themselves on surviving the disaster.Henry sat stiffly by the door with a tense expression. He kept glancing out the window at the pitch-black storm. His brows were furrowed tightly.Ella walked over with a cup of warm water and thoughtfully placed it in his hands."Henry, drink some water to warm yourself up. Don't worry. Eleanor has a full set of emergency supplies in her backpack. She's definitely hiding somewhere else."Once she can't hold out any longer, she'll come back to look for you herself."Her words immediately put Henry at ease.He snorted as his confidence returned. "Me? Worry about her? That's ridiculous! She's staying away because she wants to make me feel guilty. I'm not falling for her scheme!"His tone turned harsh as he announced to everyone in the room, "
