Chapter 3

Author: More Meat
Mom suddenly called me when I was just about to return to my dormitory to pack my belongings.

"You should come home for the holidays, Violet," she said. "Quinn is going to bring her boyfriend to meet us. You should be here too to see if he's a good match for her."

I was briefly stunned. "Quinn has a boyfriend?" I asked.

"She does!" Mom exclaimed proudly. "Apparently, he's a top science student. He's also handsome and treats Quinn well. You should take a page out of her book. Don't always dress so prudishly. Let me think… What was his name? Oh, that's right. Zack Henderson."

I felt as if I had been struck by lightning and nearly dropped my phone.

"Hello? Are you listening to me, Violet?"

I bit my lip until the metallic taste of blood filled my mouth.

"That settles it then! You definitely have to come home for the holidays!"

The second I hung up, I slumped against my chair.

Quinn and I were actually a pair of real and fake heiresses.

The Meville family tracked me down and took me home when I was ten years old, but my parents couldn't bear to send Quinn away after raising her for a decade. They told the public that we were sisters, but in reality, their hearts were biased toward Quinn.

In the four years that Zack and I were together, I told him countless times that I wanted to take him home to meet my parents.

However, he always claimed that he wasn't ready, using the excuse that he was too nervous to reject me every time. As a result, he had never stepped inside my home.

I never would have guessed that Zack would be visiting my home for the first time as Quinn's boyfriend.

Unbearable pain lanced through my chest.

I went home for the holidays. The moment I stepped across the threshold, the sounds of joyous conversation echoed from the living room.

A grand feast was laid out on the dining table.

Zack was dressed in a tailored suit as he sat next to Quinn. His lips were curled up in a gentle and refined smile.

I had never seen that expression on him.

Zack's eyes flashed for a moment when he noticed my arrival. He then averted his gaze as if it was the most natural thing in the world, pretending that he didn't know me.

"You're back, Violet," Dad said as he glanced at me. "Take a seat. Dinner's already been served."

I pulled out a chair and sat down.

Zack was meticulously slicing a steak into smaller pieces. He placed the sliced steak on Quinn's plate and said, "Be careful, Quinn. It's still hot."

"Thank you, Zack," Quinn said with a sweet smile.

Mom and Dad grinned from ear to ear as they watched the two of them.

"You're such an impressive young man, Zack," Mom said. "Quinn should count her blessings that she caught your eye."

Her satisfaction grew as she studied Zack. However, her expression darkened when she turned to look at me.

"Look at you," she continued. "You always look so unkempt. What on earth are you wearing? You're a woman, yet you don't even know how to put on makeup.

"You should take a page out of Quinn's book and learn how to speak and dress yourself. That's the only way that you'll be able to land an amazing boyfriend like Zack!"

I gripped my fork tightly.

"Mom," I said, lifting my head to look her dead in the eye. "Zack is my boyfriend."

Their laughter suddenly died down.

Quinn was briefly stunned before her eyes reddened in an instant. Tears spilled down her cheeks like broken pearls.

"I'm sorry, Violet…" she mumbled as she covered her mouth with her hand, her sobs intensifying. "I didn't mean to steal Zack from you. It's just that the theme of my photography class' final project is 'proposal'.

"I couldn't find a suitable guy to play the part, so I asked Zack to act the scenes out with me. We had to take photos of the entire process—from falling in love to getting married. I don't have any ulterior motives. Please don't be mad at me, Violet…"

Mom and Dad pulled Quinn into their arms, looking completely heartbroken.

"Have you lost your mind, Violet?" Dad roared, slamming his hand on the table. "You already have everything! Did we ever mistreat you after we brought you home?

"Quinn's so pitiful. She's just borrowing your boyfriend to complete her assignment. Why are you making things difficult for her?"

Mom also shook her head in disappointment.

"Why are you so petty, Violet?" she asked. "Quinn's your sister. Is it so hard for you to let her have this?"

I shot icy looks at them before directing my gaze toward Zack.

"Do you feel the same way, Zack?" I asked.

Zack set his fork down. He then grabbed a napkin and dabbed his lips elegantly before saying coldly, "You've utterly disappointed me, Violet."

Zack swayed from side to side, his eyes wide with anguish and disbelief. He couldn't believe that the woman who used to tolerate everything that he did would use such harsh words to criticize him."You're different now, Violet…" he mumbled."It's thanks to you that I changed," I shot back with a scoff.Just then, a slender but powerful arm draped itself across my shoulders."Did you run into trouble, Violet?"A warm, masculine voice echoed in my ears.I turned to look at my senior and current business partner, Joshua Lewis.Joshua was dressed in a silver suit. His gaze was gentle but firm."I'm fine, Joshua. This lunatic just mistook me for someone else," I said with a smile, leaning against his chest.Zack saw red when he saw Joshua's arm around me."Who the hell is he?" he demanded furiously, lunging forward to shove Joshua aside.Joshua grabbed Zack's wrist midair. "Please be mindful of your words and actions, sir. I'm Violet's fiance. If you keep harassing her, I'll have

Two years later.Dazzling lights flashed in the hall where the Royal Institute of Gladevale Architects' award ceremony was taking place. Thunderous applause erupted from the audience.I stood on the stage in a tailored gown, holding a trophy that symbolized the highest accolade a person could receive in the architectural world."I want to thank Professor Orson. I would also like to thank myself for never giving up for the past two years," I said into the microphone, using fluent Gladevaliann for my acceptance speech.Top architects and major investors from all over the globe sat in the crowd. I swept my gaze across the VIP guests who were seated in the front row, briefly pausing when my eyes landed on a certain figure. It was Zack. He was dressed in a sharp suit, attending the ceremony as the representative of Cambrion's largest real estate developer. His face hadn't changed much even though two years had passed. It was just that his cold and aloof eyes were red-rimmed at that m

A plane burst through the sea of clouds.Rain poured down from the sky over Gladevale, leaving an unfamiliar chill in the air. I took a deep breath after I stepped out of the airport, dragging my luggage bag along with me. The old Violet Meville was dead from that day on. The one who survived was a brand new version of myself.Professor Orson helped me secure an apartment near campus.I immediately threw myself into my studies. After all, architectural design was a major that required its students to dedicate their blood, sweat, and tears to their craft.I spent my days cooped up in the library and the art studio, sketching designs, building models, and doing research. I didn't have any time to reminisce about the past because of how busy I was. Eventually, I locked the people and the things that used to break my heart in the deepest corners of my mind.…Meanwhile, back in Cambrion, the days flew by. A month passed in the blink of an eye.Zack had been so sure that I would co

I turned and walked away after hanging up. The sounds of their cursing slowly faded until I couldn't hear them anymore.I hailed a cab and told the driver, "To the airport. As fast as you can, please."The cab hummed to life. The scenery beyond the window turned into a blur of colors as it sped past.I pulled out my phone and tapped on my chat app. I unpinned Zack's chat from the top before deleting it and blocking his number, doing the same for Dad, Mom, and Quinn.I cut off every possible way to contact this city, the Meville family, and Zack, leaving nothing behind. I leaned back against the seat after I was done and breathed out a long sigh.I wasn't nearly as heartbroken as I thought I would be. On the contrary, I just felt relieved as if I had freed myself from my bindings.…Meanwhile, in the hospital's emergency room, panic gripped Zack's heart as he stood by the bed.The doctor had bandaged Quinn's arm. She had only suffered a minor scrape that didn't even need stitche

"Quinn just needed my help. Why do you always think the worst of her?" Zack asked. As I took in his impatient expression, I was suddenly reminded of an incident from a hiking trip during our sophomore year.I hadn't been able to keep up with Zack because I walked a little slower than him. He'd ended up docking a point on the spot and blocking my number. All the water and food that I had packed for the hike had been in Zack's backpack. To avoid getting a heatstroke, I hid in a shaded cave until nightfall. I'd walked for about nine hours before I finally managed to trek my way out of the wilderness, completely exhausted by the time I made it back to the campsite.Zack had been sitting by the bonfire, chatting and joking with the other students. He hadn't seemed concerned at all when he took in my haggard appearance. Instead, he'd just coldly asked if I had learned my lesson. His icy words echoed in my ears, as if they had traveled four years into the future.I stared at Zack, the
