Chapter 4

Author: September Almond
I had just climbed into a cab when Mom called.

She yelled, "Jason, if you still think of me as your mom, then get your ass back here to sign the agreement! You ingrate, it's just a stupid pendant! Why are you so hung up over it?"

I hung up.

When I checked into the hotel, I found that all my cards had been frozen. I sat in the lobby and called my friends, but they either hung up without a word or didn't answer at all.

One of them said helplessly, "Jason, Ms. Dixon has made it clear that we are not to help you. Just admit you were wrong to her."

Jasper posted nine photos on his Instagram. They were filled with pictures of luxury goods, and the center photo showed him beaming between Bella and Mom.

The caption read, "It's obvious when someone loves you. It feels so good to have people backing me up and someone to catch me when I fall."

I spent the night at a 24-hour convenience store.

Early the next morning, two bodyguards blocked my way when I stepped out.

"Mr. Frost, Ms. Dixon wants us to bring you home."

One of them punched me, knocking me unconscious.

When I came to, Bella and Mom sat in the VIP section near the front. Jasper stood on the stage with a microphone, his portrait displayed on the giant LED screen behind him.

My heart skipped a beat as a bad feeling crept over me.

The next second, my face appeared on the screen. Those humiliating moments from my past were played for everyone to see.

I rushed over, wanting to smash the projector, but the bodyguards pulled me back.

"Is he the madman in Dr. Wilder's footage?"

"The one who wet himself? That's disgusting!"

Whispers spread through the crowd, full of undisguised contempt and morbid curiosity.

"This is illegal!" I yelled, my voice cracking from the anger and humiliation.

"Jason, have you lost your mind?!" Bella grabbed me by the collar. "It's the most important day in Jasper's life. Are you trying to ruin him?"

Mom stood up and snapped, "Jasper has spent so much effort treating you over the past year. You've already caused your dad's death and dragged Bella down with you. Now you want to ruin his life too?"

I trembled all over, my chest aching so badly I could barely breathe. My eyes reddened as I shook my head.

Jasper hurried offstage, his voice choked with emotion. "Jason is just upset. I believe he didn't mean to do this."

Bella's chest heaved. "Jason, apologize to Jasper."

I snapped, "I'm the victim! He trampled on my dignity! Why should I apologize to him?"

People began whispering and pointing at me, and Bella's expression darkened.

She ordered the bodyguards in a cold voice, "Lock him in the storage room backstage. Let him out when he realizes what he did wrong. This is very important to Jasper. I won't let anyone ruin it, not even you."

Despite my best efforts to pull free, the bodyguards dragged me into the cramped space and locked the door.

After a while, the smell of something burning drifted through the crack under the door.

I froze as my strength gradually left my body. The firelight illuminated my face, and I passed out.

…

After the forum, Bella took Jasper and Mom to the celebration banquet. By the time it ended, it was nearly midnight.

"Let Jason out. He should have learned his lesson by now," Bella said from the couch, her eyes closed.

She didn't notice the panicked look on the guard's face as he held up his phone.

"Ms. Dixon, something happened to… Mr. Frost."

"Mr. Shaw, we've found Jasper."When the police called, I was filling out the paperwork to report Jasper and Bella. I handed over all the evidence against Jasper, the group chat records, and proof that Bella had visited the abandoned hospital.I didn't forgive Jasper, and I wouldn't accept Bella using illegal acts as proof of love.By the time the police rescued Jasper, he'd completely lost it. He knelt before the police and screamed when he saw the lights. The doctor said the burns on his legs were so severe that he might not be able to walk normally again. When Jasper woke up, he immediately said that Mom had done this to him."Where's my mom?""Hannah isn't your mom!""She's my godmother. Bring her here. I have something to ask her."Later, the police showed me the footage from the hospital hallway. The caregiver wheeled Mom over to Jasper.Mom was still feeling hopeful. "Jasper, don't be mad at Bella, okay? She just loves Jason a lot."Jasper lifted his head. The burns

Bella stood outside the lab with a folder in her hands. She'd been doing this for 27 days straight. For the first 20 days, Bella came to see me, but I refused to let her in. Then for the next 7 days, she came with the patent transfer documents. She hadn't fought it when Shaw Corporation acquired her company. She'd only held on to a few key technologies. Now, she was handing them over to Claire."I don't want money. I just want to stay by your side, even if it means just bringing you a glass of water."I didn't take the folder from her. "We only recruit useful talents.""I can volunteer for clinical trials.""The New Life Program is still in the observation phase.""I'm willing to sign any agreement.""Bella, drug trials are overseen by an ethics committee. They're not a place for you to atone for your sins."She faltered. "Then what can I do?""Go downstairs and sign up with the project team. They need a data entry clerk."Bella nodded. "Okay. I'll do whatever it takes for

"Jason, is it you? Jason!"I had just set down my microphone, and the audience was still applauding when Bella rushed to the stage.I'd just finished explaining the clinical focus of the New Life Program, including rebuilding after trauma and helping patients regain control of their lives.Suddenly, a chair toppled over in the last row.Bella's eyes were bloodshot, and she'd lost a lot of weight. Her hair was usually perfect, but now it was a mess. She shoved the security guard aside and walked over to me. "Jason, you're still alive. This is great. Did you know I've looked for you for the past three years…"I stood still, my fingers gripping the edge of the microphone. My expression remained calm. "Ma'am, you've mistaken me for someone else."Bella's face paled. "How can you not be him? You have his voice, his eyes, and the scar on his left hand."She reached out to touch my palm, but I took a step back.Claire walked onto the stage and stepped in front of me. "Ms. Dixon, plea

"No, I didn't! Shut up!" Bella screamed, her eyes red, then she pounced on Mom.The woman turned off the tablet."Let me introduce myself. I'm Claire Jenkin, the head of Hermon Trauma Research Center in Aether. I'm also the sponsor of the New Life Program you applied for."The fire was not an accident. By the time we received your message and arrived, all we could do was place a body at the scene. You were already unconscious, and your condition was critical. As for what happens next…"I nodded, my voice weak and hoarse. "They'll recognize the phone. The medical examiner will run a DNA test. Jasper has a year's worth of my treatment samples. If I'm right, he'll do everything he can to prove that the body is mine."Claire looked at me. "He already did. He provided the police with a DNA comparison report. The report identified the deceased as Jason Frost."I slowly balled my fist as Claire handed me a name change form."You can keep your name, or you can choose a new one."I nodd

Bella's eyes flew open in shock."The storage room caught fire, and they found an unrecognizable body at the scene." The bodyguard's voice shook, and every word hammered into Bella's heart."What?" Bella sat up straight, her face white. "What did you just say?"The bodyguard didn't dare to lift his head. "It was caused by a short circuit in the old, faulty wiring. By the time the firefighters arrived, the fire was already out of control."Bella didn't hear the rest as she rushed out of the house.Mom was talking to Jasper about the celebration banquet when she noticed a change in Bella's expression and a tremor in her voice. She asked, "Bella, what's wrong? What happened?""Something happened to Jason."Jasper and Mom exchanged a glance, then hurried after Bella.…When I opened my eyes, there was a needle in my wrist. A woman sat beside my bed, dressed in a black suit and holding a document. Her voice was cool, but not pushy at all. "The doctor said you inhaled too much smo
