The sanctuary guards dragged Damon and Lily out of the gates like they were hauling trash.

“No…” Lily cried, reaching for me. “Mommy… don’t leave me…”

But I didn’t look back.

“Enough,” Lucas said, holding me tighter as I swayed.

“Was it worth it?” he asked quietly. “To hurt yourself just to cut him off.”

I leaned against his warm, solid chest and answered, my voice weak but firm.

“You have to carve out the rot to let the healing begin.”

The child in my womb seemed to feel my weakness. He shifted gently.

As if he was comforting me, giving me strength.

“Go rest,” Lucas said, sweeping me up into his arms.

His arms were a fortress. Not of possession, but of pure protection.
