Chapter 16

Author: Phoenix
James's POV

After James threw Emily out of the Blackwood Pack, he fell apart. It was like he'd lost all purpose.

At first, every day he'd run to the woods just outside the Frost Pack border and crouch there all night, watching the one road between the Frost Pack and the Blackwood Pack.

He told himself, what if? What if Olivia was just angry with him, and once the guests were gone, she'd come out to take a look, see him still waiting, and her heart would soften, and she'd come back with him?

  • I Was Never His Luna   Chapter 18

He saw that I'd spotted him, and his lips moved. But the crowd was so loud I couldn't hear a word he said. And I didn't care anymore.I looked at him once, then looked away, turning to Lucas to say the dessert at the feast was sweet and tart and really good.Lucas lit up at the compliment, his eyes crinkling. He leaned close and murmured, "Then I'll learn to make it. I'll make it for you every day."I laughed and shoved him playfully, and then we were teasing each other. When I glanced back at the spot where I'd seen him, the corner where James had stood was empty.I didn't know when he'd left, and I didn't care.As long as he didn't come looking for me again, we'd have nothing to do with each other from then on.After that, the days flew by.Lucas kept his word. He really went and learned to make that pastry I liked. The first attempt was half burnt, half raw.The second time, what should've been creamy white came out black. The third time, the color was finally right, not raw, not ov

  • I Was Never His Luna   Chapter 17

In the Frost Pack, I was the only heir. After bonding with Lucas, he and I talked it over and made a decision—to merge the Silver Moon pack and the Frost pack.We moved to a place halfway between the two packs and governed them together. When Lucas took me to meet the Silver Moon pack members, they stood along both sides of the road, holding moonflower bouquets, laughing as they pushed them into my arms.Lucas was worried I'd get worn out, so he took every single one for me.There were so many bouquets they completely blocked his face. He could barely see where he was going, stumbling step by step, a total mess—nothing like an Alpha.I laughed so hard watching him. He laughed too, then bent down and nuzzled my forehead affectionately, and the crowd burst into laughter. My face went red, but he didn't even blink. He just took my hand and walked on, muttering to me, "Ignore them. They're just jealous my mate loves me so much."Our days were busy.Merging two packs meant countless things

What if Olivia was just angry with him, and once the guests were gone, she'd come out to take a look, see him still waiting, and her heart would soften, and she'd come back with him?But he waited a whole week. Nothing. Then one day, he saw Olivia and Lucas walk out of the Frost pack from a distance.Lucas was carrying several big boxes of luggage. Olivia walked beside him, her head tilted as she said something to him, the corners of her mouth curved up, her eyes bright. And Lucas was looking down at her patiently, listening. When she finished, he'd smile and answer, then reach over and tuck a strand of hair the wind had blown loose back behind her ear.James stared hard at that

  • I Was Never His Luna   Chapter 15

Emily's POVShe found a poker table, sat down, and pulled out every bit of cash in the wallet. Then she maxed out every single credit card. Finally, she slapped the table and declared, "Chips. All of it."The casino staff traded it all for her, grinning ear to ear.Emily took the money and gambled right there for two days and two nights. She never slept, never ate. When she got thirsty, she gulped the free drinks the waiters brought around. When she got hungry, she grabbed the complimentary peanuts off the tables. Her eyes were bloodshot, fixed on the cards and the wheel. When she won, she slapped the table and howled with laughter. When she lost, she cursed and swore, her body reeking of sweat and cheap perfume. When the cards were maxed out and the cash was gone, she pulled out the ID from the wallet and used the casino's loan service, trading it for a stack of chips to keep going. She had one thought in her head—win it back. Win back everything she'd lost.Once she hit the big money

Emily's POVBut before she could get up, the next second, someone stepped right on her hand. And didn't even seem to notice, laughing and talking with someone beside her.Emily lay on the ground, her palm stinging like fire. She looked up at the human who'd stepped on her and then looked at her like she was trash, and the humiliation exploded in her chest.Since when had Emily ever been treated like this?In the Blackwood Pack, she'd practically been worshiped by Alpha James. She ate the best, wore the best, and everyone treated her with respect.Basically, she'd had the treatment of a Luna. And now, a mere human dared to step on her hand? And look at her with that disgusted face?"You're dead!" Emily gritted her teeth and pushed herself up, a vicious gleam in her eyes as she called to her wolf. She was going to shift. She was going to lunge. She was going to show this human what happened when you crossed her.She was going to make her kneel and beg for mercy, then tear her apart witho

James's POVEmily clawed desperately at the hand around her throat, fighting to speak."James, why do you only believe Olivia? Have you forgotten how much she's hated and envied me all these years?""She hates me being near you, so she wanted to drive me out. When she couldn't, she deliberately mistreated me, starved me, sent people to hurt me. And after I awakened my wolf, she got even worse—""Shut up!" James cut her off with a roar, his face dark. "You still dare to badmouth her! Clearly, I haven't punished you enough!"With that, he flung Emily away.Emily scrambled to run, crawling and stumbling to get away, but a cold voice sounded behind her."Throw her in the dungeon! Investigate everything!"At James's command, the border guards rushed forward and seized her.Emily tried to flee, struggling and cursing, "James, you bastard, how dare you do this to me..."But before she could finish, her mouth was gagged.James had people investigate everything about Emily.Olivia had tried so
