Tessa's POV

Six months later, I was living in Havenport.

We'd just wrapped a major project, so Caleb took everyone out for dinner and karaoke.

In the middle of one of the games, my stomach suddenly started hurting again.

Caleb noticed almost immediately and decided we were leaving early. A chorus of teasing followed us toward the door, but one look over his shoulder shut everyone up.

"Keep partying," he told them.

I smiled without saying anything.

I refused, so Yana planted herself outside my hospital room and refused to leave. With her that far along, no one could exactly drag her out. After I was discharged, I finally agreed to go back to Jadenton with her.Caleb insisted on coming with me.On the flight, Yana suddenly started acting like some overprotective relative sending me off into a new relationship, peppering Caleb with questions before warning him, "If you ever hurt Tessa, you'll have me to answer to."I'd had enough."Yana Carter, stop. Don't you hear how disgusting you sound?"Her head dropped immediately, her eyes turning red again. My mouth twisted in a bitter smile. I pulled on my sleep mask and didn't say another word.As soon as we landed, Yana wanted to take me straight to the hospital, but Caleb stopped her."Tessa needs food and rest first."Yana didn't argue. Instead, she smiled at me and said, "Caleb really cares about you. Seeing how well he treats you, I can finally stop worrying."Caleb and I spent the n

The pain got bad enough to land me in the hospital, and instead of being sent home, I was admitted and scheduled for surgery.Afterward, I lay weakly in bed while Caleb took care of everything around me.The scene felt strangely familia

  • I Was Never More Than His Backup Plan   Chapter 6

Tessa's job had always been exhausting. Working until midnight was routine, and she talked about quitting almost every day.Yale had been telling her for ages to find something less demanding, or better yet, take some time off altogether. He could afford to support her. After proposing two months ago, he'd handed over his salary account and all his savings to her. Not long afterward, Tessa had another bad stomach episode while working late. That was what finally pushed her to resign. There was only one person from Tessa's college days who could have been the man on the phone.Caleb Lawson. He'd been three years ahead of her in the same department at college, and later became the manager who recruited her into the company.Tessa had once mentioned that Caleb's voice sounded a little like Yale's.Yale had pretended to be jealous. "So that's why you don't mind sitting in meetings with him until midnight?"She'd kicked him lightly. "Even if it is, isn't that still because I like you?"For

Third-Person POVBy the time Yale gave chase, Tessa was already gone. He tried calling, but there was no answer.Outside the hospital, the glare was so intense that his vision swam. Despite the heat beating down on him, he felt cold all over. His phone rang while he was still standing there. The moment he answered, Yana's panicked voice came through."Yale, I think I'm bleeding."His heart jumped into his throat. For several seconds, he stared blankly at the traffic streaming past the hospital before turning and running back inside.Tessa was only too hurt to accept what had happened right now, he told himself. She had loved him for more than ten years. She'd carried that crush quietly all that time and never truly given up on him. There was no way she could actually walk away.Yana remained in the hospital for three days before Yale brought her home to recuperate. After coaxing her into drinking half a bowl of soup, she shooed him out of the bedroom."Go find Tessa! If anything happen

My lips moved, but I wasn't sure any sound came out before everything went black. When I woke up in the hospital, the IV bag beside me was nearly empty. I lay there for a moment, bracing myself for Yale to appear. So when a different man walked in behind the nurse, I startled so badly I almost sat up."Don't move."He immediately came around to the other side of the bed and gently stopped me."I happened to call you earlier. A security guard answered your phone and said you'd passed out. He asked who I was to you..."I stared at him blankly, then nodded. It took me a while to fully process what he was saying. When I checked my phone, I found dozens of missed calls and messages from both Yale and Yana. They'd gone back to the apartment, seen that all my things were gone, and wanted to know where I'd gone.Over and over, they apologized and begged me not to be angry.Yale promised that I was still the woman he was going to marry.Yana swore she would terminate the pregnancy. Then another

I watched Yana pound at her own stomach, her eyes growing redder by the second. The woman in front of me suddenly felt like a stranger. Worse, there was something about her that sent a chill down my spine. If she really hadn't wanted to come between Yale and me, she never would have called him in the middle of the night. She wouldn't have blurted out that she was pregnant before she'd even heard his voice. And she knew we were getting married the next day.A wave of nausea hit me. I dry-heaved several times, but nothing came up.Yana immediately reached over to rub my back, then hurried off to get me water and medicine."I'm sorry, Tessa. Is your stomach hurting again? You're so pale. Even your lips have lost all their color..."My head was pounding. I knocked her hand away. The glass and the bottle of pills slipped from her hands and hit the floor, water and tablets scattering everywhere."No," I said. "I should be thanking you. You stopped me before I walked straight into a disaster.
