Chapter 3

Author: Shearheart
Valentina's POV

After waiting till dawn, I numbly dragged my suitcase out of the villa and took a cab to the airport. I checked in for my flight and stood alone in the departure hall, staring blankly into the distance.

The din of conversation filled the air. Suddenly, several voices I knew all too well drifted over from somewhere behind me.

Stiffening, I turned my head to look.

Antonio stood in the middle in a perfectly tailored suit, with Carlotta and my parents beside him. And in front of him was a woman who had just emerged from the international arrivals gate. She had a bright smile on her face.

It was Isabella, the woman with whom he'd taken all those photos in his encrypted album—the woman he'd claimed to be dead for years now.

Isabella rushed forward and threw herself into Antonio's arms without a care in the world.

Antonio immediately opened his arms wide and caught her securely. Throughout our five-year relationship, I had never been on the receiving end of even a modicum of the tenderness that now filled his eyes.

Pressing her cheek against his chest, Isabella said in a soft tone and coquettish pout, "Back then, you deliberately spread the news that I had died in an accident and arranged for me to hide abroad to keep me out of danger. It must have been hard on you, carrying the weight of the family's conflicts all by yourself."

Antonio's voice was filled with affectionate indulgence. "That's nothing if it means I get to keep you safe. Our enemies were watching closely then. The only way to make sure they stopped trying to hunt you down was to convince everyone that you were already dead. As for Valentina…"

He paused.

"I only kept her by my side as a means to an end. If my enemies knew that I had someone new in my life, they would stop trying to look into you."

Mom hurriedly chimed in with an ingratiating smile, "It's so wonderful to see that you've returned safely, Ms. Bianchi! All these years, Don Antonio has kept Valentina on a tight leash, refusing to take any photos with her or make their relationship official.

"He did it all for the sake of ensuring that no one would get in between you two once you've reunited, of course. And yesterday, the moment he heard that you'd be coming back, he didn't even bother going through with the engagement party!"

I stood frozen nearby. All the blood in my body seemed to stop flowing. An icy chill spread through me.

So all that talk about being sentimental and afraid of history repeating itself had been nothing but carefully crafted lies!

Isabella's gaze swept toward me. She stiffened for a moment before whispering something into Antonio's ear.

Antonio whipped around. The moment his eyes met mine, a flicker of unease and guilt appeared in them.

But at the very next moment, Isabella exclaimed with artfully crafted surprise, "Oh! Isn't that Valentina? What a coincidence, running into you here. Don't tell me… you deliberately tailed Antonio and followed him here."

The moment Antonio heard that, a brief flash of remorse in his eyes swiftly faded, replaced by wariness and annoyance.

Isabella affectionately looped her arm through Antonio's, her voice carrying a feigned note of apology as she continued, "Now that I think about it, I do feel bad that you had to remain in the shadows for five whole years. You didn't even get to have your relationship acknowledged in public. You won't hold it against me, right?"

Antonio instinctively moved Isabella behind him, his guard up as he eyed me.

My parents and Carlotta hurried over as well, clearly afraid I might make things difficult for Isabella.

After seeing the four of them stand united in protecting Isabella, I let out a mocking scoff. "Why would I hold it against you? I've long since decided that I want nothing to do with a lying scumbag like him, along with that sycophantic family and so-called friend of mine.

"In fact, I should thank you for taking the trash off my hands. You saved me the trouble of having to find a way to get rid of them myself."

As their figures disappeared around the corner, I simply smiled indifferently. They knew better than anyone else why my heart had turned to stone when it came to them. They just had to make themselves seem like the victim to feel better about themselves. After they left, only Antonio remained frozen where he was. He'd brought the marriage license application with him, and he was clutching it now until his knuckles turned white.A bodyguard stood silently beside him, watching the normally ruthless and decisive Don of the Leone family lose all composure.Antonio's piercing gaze remained locked on me. His voice was steeped in his obsessive and stubborn unwillingness to accept this situation. "You'd truly rather be alone for the rest of your life than give me another chance to make things right by you?"You're only acting out of spite right now. You've chosen the wrong person to lean on. Come back to me. All of the past restrictions won't apply anymore. I'll make our relationship publi

Out of nowhere, Carlotta fell to her knees. She grabbed my legs and cried out tearfully, "I'm so sorry, Val! I let my greedy desire for Don Antonio's resources come between us. I betrayed you, my best friend."Now that my business has collapsed and no one else in the circle is willing to help me, I finally realize that you're the only one who has ever genuinely cared about me."My parents rushed forward as well, reaching out to grab me. In just six months, their hair had already turned gray, and their faces were haggard."We've been thinking about you this whole time. We always favored Carlo over you and treated you unfairly… But he took all of our money and gambled it all away. His creditors took the house to pay off his debts. We've had to move into a shabby rental and rely on odd jobs to survive!"Can you please forgive us?"All three of them looked at me with desperation in their eyes. After eyeing them in silence for a moment, I said evenly, "I stopped hating you guys a long

Valentina's POVThe six months of closed-door preparations finally ended. We'd finalized the entire plan for the auction house's inaugural international antique auction. After reading through the whole thing, Enzo looked at me with anticipation in his eyes. "Since we've completed the preliminary work, I'll give you two days to rest and recharge. Once the auction house is officially up and running, I'll leave the entire operation to you. Can you handle it?"As the salty sea breeze rushed against my face, I declared with a faint smile, "Of course."The moment I stepped out of the quiet seaside clubhouse, the noise of the outside world came rushing toward me. For a moment, it felt as if I'd stepped out of another life. For the past six months, I'd deliberately pushed aside every other thought and thrown myself headfirst into work, tackling one task after another. We kept running into all kinds of problems. Scrapping and rewriting the proposals became routine work for me.If a projec

Antonio's expression was cold as ice as he raised his voice and shouted, "Guards!"In an instant, the bodyguards waiting by the walls of the compound rushed over, seizing Federico, Giulia, and Carlotta by the arms to restrain them.Eyeing the trio who started pleading with him, Antonio declared authoritatively, "From this moment on, I'm freezing all the approvals I gave for the Santoro family's trade business. I'm also cutting off all of the exclusive supply chains I provided to Carlotta Moretti's business. I'm terminating all of my business dealings with the three of you!"Their faces darkened, but they were too intimidated by his immense power and influence to confront him openly.Federico gritted his teeth and muttered, "When it comes down to it, you're the one who never even thought about making your relationship with Valentina official. You've been keeping her in hiding for five years, so what gives you the right to expect her to obey you in everything?"Carlotta's eyes redde

Third-Person POVInside a lavish private room in an exclusive clubhouse, Antonio stared at the messages he had sent Valentina. He could tell from the blue ticks that she'd read them, but even though hours had passed, she never sent a response. For some reason, he felt restless and uneasy.Since Isabella had just returned to the country, a small group of friends had gathered to welcome her home.Valentina's parents, Federico Santoro and Giulia Conti, edged closer to Antonio, their faces plastered with ingratiating smiles."Stop worrying about that ungrateful girl. She was the one who behaved disgracefully at the airport, making a scene in public. She completely humiliated herself!"By the way, when do you think you'll be able to start providing your support for the overseas trade network that Carlo needs?"The sheer greed behind their question only intensified Antonio's disgust for them. "We'll revisit that later. Valentina fell pretty hard at the airport just now. Have you guys
