Chapter 4

Author: Shearheart
Valentina's POV

The moment I finished speaking, Carlotta immediately pointed a finger at me and snapped at me harshly, "You'd better watch your tongue, Valentina! Isabella had to spend five miserable years hiding abroad! How can you still say such hurtful things to her?"

Mom publicly berated me as well.

"How I wish I never gave birth to you! Ms. Bianchi is a sweet and thoughtful young woman. She has been nothing but considerate of Don Antonio. Meanwhile, look at you! You're so petty, spiteful, and narrow-minded. You don't show the slightest hint of tolerance or understanding at all!"

The mask on Isabella's face finally shattered. Furious and humiliated, she raised her hand and swung it toward my face.

But I was prepared for that. I caught her wrist and flung it aside. She immediately stumbled backward, and Antonio strode forward, catching her securely in his arms before shoving me aside.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?"

I lost my balance and crashed onto the floor.

Pain shot through my body, spreading all over. My knees had scraped against the floor and had started to bleed. I braced both hands against the floor and tried to push myself up, but I failed both attempts.

Antonio's eyes flashed with remorse. He took half a step forward, saying, "Are you—"

Isabella suddenly furrowed her brows and whimpered softly, "Antonio, my wrist really hurts… I think I twisted my waist, too."

All at once, the concern in Antonio's eyes vanished. He swiftly cradled Isabella in his arms and carefully rubbed her reddened wrist for her.

Then he turned back toward me, his tone clipped and icy as he declared, "How dare you lay a hand on someone as sweet and gentle as Isabella? It's my fault for indulging in your temper, allowing you to become this arrogant and domineering!"

Even my parents and Carlotta didn't bother helping me up. Instead, they were busy urging Antonio to calm down and not get upset because of me.

They all hurried out of the airport together. Not one of them turned around to look at me.

I lay there on the floor, watching as they left without a thought for me. A bitter, self-deprecating laugh escaped me, and the tears soon followed beyond my control, turning me into a humiliating and pathetic mess.

When the plane landed, I turned my phone back on. It'd been off the entire day. The moment I unlocked the screen, dozens of missed calls from Antonio came flooding in. There were also several text messages.

"I let my emotions get the better of me at the airport just now. I shouldn't have pushed you like that."

"Where are you now? Are you hurt?"

"Let's talk when you've calmed down, okay? I'll explain everything to you."

I sneered at the screen, my gaze impassive.

Without any hesitation, I opened my contacts list and blocked every single one of them before deleting their numbers altogether.

As their figures disappeared around the corner, I simply smiled indifferently. They knew better than anyone else why my heart had turned to stone when it came to them. They just had to make themselves seem like the victim to feel better about themselves. After they left, only Antonio remained frozen where he was. He'd brought the marriage license application with him, and he was clutching it now until his knuckles turned white.A bodyguard stood silently beside him, watching the normally ruthless and decisive Don of the Leone family lose all composure.Antonio's piercing gaze remained locked on me. His voice was steeped in his obsessive and stubborn unwillingness to accept this situation. "You'd truly rather be alone for the rest of your life than give me another chance to make things right by you?"You're only acting out of spite right now. You've chosen the wrong person to lean on. Come back to me. All of the past restrictions won't apply anymore. I'll make our relationship publi

Out of nowhere, Carlotta fell to her knees. She grabbed my legs and cried out tearfully, "I'm so sorry, Val! I let my greedy desire for Don Antonio's resources come between us. I betrayed you, my best friend."Now that my business has collapsed and no one else in the circle is willing to help me, I finally realize that you're the only one who has ever genuinely cared about me."My parents rushed forward as well, reaching out to grab me. In just six months, their hair had already turned gray, and their faces were haggard."We've been thinking about you this whole time. We always favored Carlo over you and treated you unfairly… But he took all of our money and gambled it all away. His creditors took the house to pay off his debts. We've had to move into a shabby rental and rely on odd jobs to survive!"Can you please forgive us?"All three of them looked at me with desperation in their eyes. After eyeing them in silence for a moment, I said evenly, "I stopped hating you guys a long

Valentina's POVThe six months of closed-door preparations finally ended. We'd finalized the entire plan for the auction house's inaugural international antique auction. After reading through the whole thing, Enzo looked at me with anticipation in his eyes. "Since we've completed the preliminary work, I'll give you two days to rest and recharge. Once the auction house is officially up and running, I'll leave the entire operation to you. Can you handle it?"As the salty sea breeze rushed against my face, I declared with a faint smile, "Of course."The moment I stepped out of the quiet seaside clubhouse, the noise of the outside world came rushing toward me. For a moment, it felt as if I'd stepped out of another life. For the past six months, I'd deliberately pushed aside every other thought and thrown myself headfirst into work, tackling one task after another. We kept running into all kinds of problems. Scrapping and rewriting the proposals became routine work for me.If a projec

Antonio's expression was cold as ice as he raised his voice and shouted, "Guards!"In an instant, the bodyguards waiting by the walls of the compound rushed over, seizing Federico, Giulia, and Carlotta by the arms to restrain them.Eyeing the trio who started pleading with him, Antonio declared authoritatively, "From this moment on, I'm freezing all the approvals I gave for the Santoro family's trade business. I'm also cutting off all of the exclusive supply chains I provided to Carlotta Moretti's business. I'm terminating all of my business dealings with the three of you!"Their faces darkened, but they were too intimidated by his immense power and influence to confront him openly.Federico gritted his teeth and muttered, "When it comes down to it, you're the one who never even thought about making your relationship with Valentina official. You've been keeping her in hiding for five years, so what gives you the right to expect her to obey you in everything?"Carlotta's eyes redde

For the past five years, whenever he came back late at night, he would return to a home filled with traces of Valentina. Over time, he'd grown accustomed to it.And whenever they got into a fight, he never took any of it seriously. They were all nothing but minor spats to him. She would always calm down and come back to her senses on her own.Even if the fights got serious, Federico, Giulia, and Carlotta would all step in to convince her to back down. After all, he had indeed funneled them the resources they wanted for that very purpose anyway. By having the trio step in on his behalf every time he fought with her, he saved himself a ton of trouble in the relationship.Somewhere in his subconscious, Antonio had always been certain that no matter how badly he and Valentina argued, in the end, she would still choose to stay with him. He had long since taken her companionsh

Third-Person POVInside a lavish private room in an exclusive clubhouse, Antonio stared at the messages he had sent Valentina. He could tell from the blue ticks that she'd read them, but even though hours had passed, she never sent a response. For some reason, he felt restless and uneasy.Since Isabella had just returned to the country, a small group of friends had gathered to welcome her home.Valentina's parents, Federico Santoro and Giulia Conti, edged closer to Antonio, their faces plastered with ingratiating smiles."Stop worrying about that ungrateful girl. She was the one who behaved disgracefully at the airport, making a scene in public. She completely humiliated herself!"By the way, when do you think you'll be able to start providing your support for the overseas trade network that Carlo needs?"The sheer greed behind their question only intensified Antonio's disgust for them. "We'll revisit that later. Valentina fell pretty hard at the airport just now. Have you guys
