Chapter 1

I tapped into the airline app and bought a one-way ticket bound for my hometown in three days. The flight would take off in the evening.

As a window popped up notifying me of the successful payment, my fingers froze over my phone for a long while. It was as though I had finally woken from a dream that had lasted for three years.

A little over 1:00 am, the sound of the front door unlocking rang out before the bedroom light abruptly flared to life seconds later.

The glaring white light seared my vision, making me instinctively shut my eyes.

My boyfriend, Zachary Sutton, came to a stop beside the bed and spoke up. His tone was filled with impatience.

"Why did you do it? Did you know that Rowena has a brand partner coming tomorrow to assess our account? That job is now ruined because you deleted the account! Winona Lipton, do you ever use your brain before you do anything?"

I opened my eyes again but kept silent.

After waiting several seconds with no response from me, Zachary grew even more enraged.

"Over a million followers, gone, just like that! That means all the work and effort that I put in for the past three years were wasted! Just what the hell were you thinking?"

Pushing myself into a sitting position, I replied softly, "Zachary, I want to break up with you."

He paused for a moment before laughing. "This again? Every time you're upset, you threaten to break up with me. Don't you find it annoying? I'm just helping Rowena build a portfolio so that she can use it to find more collaboration partners. You're already an adult; is it really necessary to get jealous over such a minor thing?"

Once again, I remained quiet.

He sighed, then softened his tone. "Fine. I know that you've been in a bad mood recently, but did you really have to delete the account? Did you have to throw such a huge tantrum and cause such a huge mess? Now I have to think of a way to explain this to the brand partner. Am I not busy enough for you?"

I watched him pour a glass of water and drink it, all the while trying to talk sense into me.

Suddenly, a wave of exhaustion swept over me.

Throughout his long rant, he had mentioned Rowena Sanders' brand deal, the worth of our TikTok account, and his wasted efforts over the past three years.

However, not once had he ever mentioned me.

I lay back down again with my back turned toward him.

Zachary stood there for a moment longer before uttering in a less tense voice, "Sleep. We'll talk about this further tomorrow."

Subsequently, the sound of the shower turning on in the bathroom reached my ears.

I opened my eyes to stare at the ceiling. My mind suddenly drifted back to three years ago.

The night our account reached 100 thousand followers, Zachary and I had sat on the floor of our rented apartment and eaten microwaved mac and cheese to celebrate.

Zachary had waved his phone at me, his eyes gleaming so brightly as he said, "Winnie, from now on, you'll be in charge of taking the most beautiful shots, while I'll be responsible for editing you into the most wonderful stories. It's a promise, okay?"

Back in the present, the hissing of the running shower continued.

I blinked, but that still didn't stop the tingling sensation in my eyes.

The next morning, Zachary was already gone when I woke up.

I cooked myself a bowl of oatmeal, and as the steam wafted into my face, I could feel my eyes start to water again.

I sent my mother a message. "Mom, I'll be going back home in two days to stay for a while."

It took a long while before Mom replied, "Really? Are you not busy anymore? Your dad went for a follow-up last month, and the doctor said he was recovering nicely. He's always talking about you, though."

As I read the sentence, "Are you not busy anymore?", my throat abruptly closed up tight.

The first year away from home, Zachary had said we had to rush to finish producing a video before the end of the year.

"Who's going to help me if you leave for the Christmas holidays?"

The second year, my dad had to undergo coronary artery bypass surgery.

Zachary had said, "You won't be able to help even if you go back. Might as well finish shooting this brand deal and send the money back. That's more helpful than anything else."

In the third year, Rowena returned to the country. This time, he couldn't even be bothered to think of an excuse, only giving a vague answer of, "I'm too busy and can't leave."

I typed out a long response, wanting to say that I was sorry, that I had genuinely missed them dearly all these years, and that I was so, so tired.

In the end, I deleted the entire thing and only replied with, "I'll call you when I arrive. Tell Dad not to worry about me."

Before going to Frostia, I made a trip back to the city I used to live in with Zachary. It was not because of him, but because a brand had invited me to make a short film about goodbyes, and I had chosen this place. It was drizzling when my plane landed.I knew this city like the back of my hand—which routes to take to avoid traffic congestion, which coffee shop had the best coffee, and which scenic spot had the best sunset views. All these memories were associated with Zachary, but as I revisited these places, I realized that the city itself was pretty nice too. I had simply placed too much meaning on one person back then to see it.The day we wrapped up our shoot, a staff member asked me, "Ms. Lipton, should we head back to your old studio to capture some footage?"I paused for a moment, but in the end, I nodded. Our old studio was still in the same spot, as Zachary hadn't moved away. However, the signboard had been changed. When I pushed open the door and entered, I found hi

It was spring when Zachary finally appeared before me in the flesh.By then, my new account had already reached over 800 thousand followers, and the cultural tourism short film had won an industry award. The organizer invited me to the capital city to receive my award. Since Dad's recovery was coming along nicely, he and Mom decided to go with me.On the night of the award ceremony, I put on a long, white gown. It wasn't particularly expensive, but it fit my body like a glove. Before I had to step on stage, Mom fussed over my shoulder straps."You're so beautiful."I asked with a smile, "Really?"She nodded. "You're so much more beautiful now than in any of your past photos."I understood the implications behind her words. In the past, I was always trying to find the best angle for Zachary and was constantly worrying about getting an ugly shot, not having enough lighting, or taking an incomplete shot. This time, I was the one who was standing in the spotlight. I no longer nee

My new account grew at an incredibly fast rate, and one month later, I had reached over 200 thousand followers.I hadn't relied on a couple persona, nor had I relied on Zachary's editing. Instead, it had been entirely due to my own efforts as I captured moments in everyday life.I took photos of my dad during his physiotherapy. He steadied himself with the railings as he slowly stepped forward, and even though he kept complaining about how bothersome I was being, there was no hiding the way he subtly straightened his back.Similarly, I followed my mom when she went for her community line dancing sessions. At first, she was rather camera–shy and embarrassed, but eventually, I managed to capture the smile that stretched across her face, making her look significantly younger.Besides that, I went around the city, taking photos of the old-school breakfast diners, the raindrops pearling on the grass after a light rain, and the farmer's market early in the morning.Naturally, I also inc

It wasn't until a week later that Zachary finally sought me out. That day, I accompanied Mom to the farmer's market. While she was busy haggling over the prices, I took photos of her hand as she picked out tomatoes.Suddenly, my phone rang.It was an unfamiliar number, but when I answered it, it was Zachary's voice that came over the line. He sounded incredibly hoarse."Winona."I kept quiet for a few seconds before replying, "Is there something you need?"For a long moment, there was only silence. It was quiet for so long that I thought he would hang up.However, when he finally spoke up again, his voice was actually shaking."Did you really go home?""Yes.""Why didn't you tell me?"I failed to stop the bubble of laughter that burst from my lips. "Zachary, I told you that I wanted to break up before I left, didn't I?"His breathing audibly stuttered. "I just thought that that was spoken in the heat of the moment. In the past, you would get angry as well, but every time, y

By the time the plane landed, it was already late at night.I wheeled my suitcase out of the airport, instantly spotting my parents, who were waiting for me.Mom had a thick scarf wrapped around her neck, while her hands held a spare down jacket.Beside her was Dad. Even though it hadn't been all that long since he underwent heart surgery, he still stood with his back straight as he waved a hand at me."Winnie!"The instant Mom called out to me, my eyes and nose tingled with oncoming tears. It had been three years.During that time, I followed Zachary across dozens of cities, filming snow-capped mountains, vibrant islands, deep canyons, and beautiful sunsets.Yet, not once had I ever felt like I did now, like I had finally returned to the human world.Mom hurried over to me and draped the down jacket around my shoulders."Oh, look at how much weight you've lost! Did you forget to eat proper meals again?"I bowed my head, and my tears splashed onto the backs of my hands.Tha

The day I would be flying back to my hometown, Zachary left in the morning, but not before telling me, "I'll be doing a full-day photoshoot today, so I might be back later tonight.""Okay."After he shut the front door, silence descended upon the house. This would be the last day I spent in this place.I pulled my suitcase out from behind the closet and double-checked my items. My ID, gold earrings, content planner, a few articles of clothing, and my phone charger. In the end, I only managed to fully pack a 20-inch suitcase.I had handpicked most of the items in this house, yet I didn't bother bringing a single one with me.I was the one who had labelled the spice bottles in the kitchen, and the note stuck to the fridge door was also my doing."There are six eggs left, but the salt is running out."Zachary's fridge used to always be empty.I was the one who had turned this place into a home. The couch in the living room, the curtains, the bedding—they had all been carefull
