Chapter 1

Isaac squeezed my hand. "Linda, don't do this. There are a lot of people here."

I turned to him. "I'm the future Luna of this pack. Is this really all I'm worth to you?"

I held up the moonstone necklace. You could buy the exact same one at any mall.

Isaac blinked, then tried to explain. "No one in the pack is going to disrespect you over a necklace.

"And Chloe is your sister. She can handle the pendant's energy better.

"I'll make it up to you, okay?"

My eyes burned.

He was always like this. He hurt me, then tried to make it up to me.

After missing my qualifiers, he made it up to me by driving north through the night to catch a meteor shower. By the time we got there, he was so exhausted that he fell asleep with his head on my shoulder.

"We saw the Tears of Saint Lawrence. That means we get to be together forever, right?"

So I forgave him for not showing up.

One night, he left me burning with fever to comfort Chloe after she'd had a nightmare. When he finally came back, he wrapped his late father's rosary around my wrist—the one keepsake his father had left him.

So I forgave him for neglecting me.

This time, I didn't want to forgive him.

When he moved to fasten the necklace around my neck, I stopped him and said calmly, "Isaac, let's break up."

Everything around us went quiet.

Isaac froze, then lowered his voice. "You're upset? Can we please not do this in public?"

"I'm not making a scene."

Chloe took off the wolf's-head necklace and pushed it toward me.

"Linda, if you want it that badly, you can have it.

"The bonding ceremony is next Saturday.

"Isaac is so busy. As his future Luna, you should really try to be more understanding."

I was so angry I almost laughed.

For years, I'd given up the ballet I loved and poured everything I had into helping him run the pack.

And now my own little sister was teaching me how to be a proper Luna.

I shot Chloe a cold look.

She stiffened and hid behind Isaac. "Linda's scary."

Isaac patted her shoulder, then turned to me. "Linda, don't take it out on Chloe."

My chest felt tight.

A heavy lump lodged in my throat.

Isaac took my hand again, looking completely sincere. "I promise. Next time, I'll get you a new necklace."

I didn't say anything.

He stroked my hair and mistook my silence for forgiveness.

Then he walked ahead with Chloe, laughing and talking, his head tilted toward her. He looked patient and gentle.

It was the same patient, gentle look he'd once given me as I sat alone in a corner. "The Moon Goddess chose you," he'd said. "I choose you too, Linda."

I used to believe that side of him belonged to me alone.

I used to believe I was the only one for him.

But now I knew I wasn't.

"Isaac," I said, catching his arm. "We..."

Isaac cut me off and handed me an envelope. "Here's the schedule. Take a look. After the ceremony, there's a press interview—"

I blinked. "I thought it was going to be a private ceremony."

"It was a last-minute change." He rubbed his forehead. "Chloe's producers want to ride the wave of attention, and the pack thinks the publicity will make us look good."

I looked down at the pages in my hand.

After the bonding ceremony came a family dinner, followed by a press conference.

And the last event on the schedule was—Chloe's celebration dinner?

"What is this?" My voice was cold.

"Chloe's show broke its ratings record last week. She wants to throw a small party and use our venue." Isaac paused, then added, "If you're tired by then, just come with me and make an appearance."

My bonding day.

Chloe's party day?

Back then, whenever I was upset, Isaac would drive me up to the hilltop to look at the moon.

We'd park by the road and lie side by side on the hood of the car.

His eyes were only ever on me.

But then Chloe said she wanted to see the moon too, and the hilltop became a place for all three of us.

Chloe was everywhere!

I folded the pages, then hurried ahead.

Behind me, she asked softly, "Isaac, I'm wearing a champagne-colored dress to the party. Want me to find you a matching tie?"

"Sure," he said. "You pick."

With Chloe, he never hesitated.

With me, he had to weigh every word.

Explain himself, again and again.

Fix things, again and again.

So what was I?

Just his second choice whenever Chloe wasn't around?

I stopped, pulled out my phone, and tapped a familiar name.

It was Jess, my friend and a principal dancer in Berlin.

I sent her a message.

"Babe, any chance your company still has an opening for a ballet dancer?"

She called me back almost immediately, thrilled. "Linda! You finally made up your mind? But I heard your bonding ceremony is next week."

"I want to go back onstage," I said quietly. "If there's still a place for me—"

"There is!" she said at once. "I'll talk to the company right now. The moment I hear anything, I'll call you."

Isaac returned to his apartment and slid down to the floor just inside the door. The room was so quiet he could hear his own heartbeat. He reached for the mind-link in his chest. It flickered like a flame about to go out.He used to feel everything Linda felt through the mind-link: her anger, her hurt, her sadness. He'd always known. And every time, he'd tried to make it up to her. He'd believed that once he made it up to her, the pain disappeared. He had never imagined the link between them could become so fragile. The Elder called. "Alpha, we're still dealing with the fallout from the interrupted ceremony. The pack can't be without its Alpha. You have to come back and do your duty.""I need time." His voice was raw."You don't have time. The pack's image has taken a hit, and outside forces are watching. As Alpha, your duty comes before your feelings." The Elder took a breath and tried again. "Once the rejection ceremony is over, you can choose another Luna."The call ended.Isaac sat

Lately, Seth had been showing up outside my apartment building all the time.He always said he was in the area and offered me a ride, but somehow, he'd have my favorite coffee and a little cake waiting for me in the car.Amy sat in the back. As soon as I climbed into the front seat, she said, "Linda, today's cake is raspberry. My brother said you seem to like things a little tart."I paused, then took the little cake and bit into it.Just the right amount of sweet and tart. And it was exactly the flavor I liked."Thank you. It's delicious," I said."He guessed right!" Amy said.Seth smiled. He started the car, keeping his eyes on the road. "I didn't guess. I observed, then I deduced."I laughed. With the two of them around, life felt a lot lighter. What surprised me was that Isaac didn't hurry back to London. He rented an apartment in Berlin and waited outside the company entrance for me every day.He filled my dressing room with gifts: custom pointe shoes, an antique necklace from an

Seth saw my expression and asked quietly, "Need a hand?"I shook my head.I knew Isaac would find me sooner or later. And I'd been waiting for him to."All right." Seth patted Amy's shoulder. "We'll head out, then. Call me if you need anything."I watched them leave, then turned back. Isaac stared at me without blinking."Who is he?" His voice was hoarse."That's none of your business," I said flatly, even as my chest tightened.I couldn't tell whether the pain in my chest was mine or his."Linda—" Isaac stepped toward me and reached for my hand.I stepped back, out of reach."Isaac, you came all this way, but my answer hasn't changed." I took a breath and kept my voice calm. "When I told you we were over, I wasn't joking."I looked away and continued, "I'm tired of always coming second to Chloe. I'm tired of you putting her first, then trying to make it up to me.""No! It's not like that!" Isaac cut in desperately. "Linda, I know I was wrong. I swear, from now on—""There is no from n

At six on the morning of the bonding ceremony, Isaac woke up.Out of habit, he rolled over and reached for Linda's side of the bed, only to find cold sheets.Isaac lay still as sleep drained from him. Then he remembered that Linda had been staying at her own house for the past few days.He tried to reach her through the mind-link.Nothing came back.He tried again. It was as if the link had been swallowed whole. All that remained was a hollow echo. Before, even when Linda was angry with him, he could still feel her there.Every breath she took was like a thread tugging at him, telling him she'd always be beside him.Now that thread felt ready to snap.Isaac sat up as a panic he couldn't explain swept through him.He called Linda. No answer. Then he called Chloe, who sounded relaxed. "Linda's probably just nervous."Isaac gripped the phone, frozen. He told himself Linda was only angry. Once the ceremony was over, he would make up for everything that had happened over the past few days.

The day after the mix-up, Isaac had every announcement with the wrong name taken down. The head of PR was replaced too.He came to see me himself and set the corrected statement on the table. "Linda, I promise nothing like this will ever happen again."I didn't look up. I kept stretching at the barre. He stood there for a while, then said, "The rite is Thursday night. The Elders will all be there.""Okay," I said.Traditionally, a rite honoring the Moon Goddess had to be performed before the bonding ceremony.Isaac and I would stand side by side inside the circle, hold hands, and summon the moon's resonance. If the resonance was strong enough, all 12 stones around the circle would light up at once, proving that the Moon Goddess blessed the match.Everyone knew it was just a formality. After all, the Moon Goddess had already chosen me as Isaac's fated mate. But no one expected what happened at our rite.On the open grounds in front of the Kane estate, Isaac held out his hand to me.His
