SHATTERED

Mara woke to someone pounding on the door.

For a moment she didn’t know where she was. All she registered was warmth against her back, a strong arm heavy around her waist, the slow, steady beat of someone else’s heart under her cheek.

Then last night hit her in a rush.

Valen. His hands. His mouth. The way their magic had tangled and exploded, shadows curling tight around them as if even the darkness wanted to keep them together.

Another round of pounding rattled the handle.

“Valen!” a woman’s voice shrieked from the hall. “I know you’re in there! Who are you with? Is it her? Is it that dirty little maid?”

Mara’s stomach plunged.

The arm around her tightened for the briefest second, then vanished. Valen sat up fast, muscles going tense, eyes already burning with frustration as he grabbed his shirt from the floor.

Mara pushed herself up, clutching the sheet to her chest. “Who is that?”

He swore under his breath. The sound was old and raw.

The woman jiggled the handle. “Open this door! I

  • I Was Promised To The Vampire King   BIRTHDAY BAD DECISIONS

The first thing she did was go to the closet. If she thought about it too long, she wouldn’t move at all. She’d sit on the edge of the nice bed in the nice room in the king’s private wing, listening to the echo of immortal ringing around her skull until it hollowed her out.So she didn’t think. She opened the closet instead.Light washed over neat rows of clothes he’d had brought for her. Dark jeans, soft sweaters, fitted tops, leather jackets, boots. It was too much. Too intimate. It said I see you in a language made of fabric and thread. Her gaze slid past the practical things to the section she’d ignored on purpose the first time. The dresses.Tiny. Black. Slip-thin straps, plunging necklines, hems that would start fights. One caught her eye—a little black dress that was more suggestion than garment. Thin shoulder straps, a neckline that dipped scandalously low, fabric that clung and ended mid-thigh at best.“Absolutely not,” she told it.Five minutes later, she was zipping herself

  • I Was Promised To The Vampire King   THE KING’S CLAIM

Mara didn’t sleep. Her heart still felt wrong in her chest—like someone had rewired it with ancient magic and expected her to pretend it was normal. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw that flash of power in the training room, the cold floor beneath her as everything went dark… and Valen’s hand closing over her chest to bring her back.Immortal, he’d said. She didn’t know what that meant yet. But it sounded like a cage that went on forever.By the time daylight began leaking through the high window, she was still awake, sitting on the bedroom floor with her back against the bedframe, staring at nothing.A knock at the door broke the silence.“Kira?” she called, voice hoarse. Her friend slipped inside and shut the door quickly behind her. Kira’s messy ponytail and smudged eyeliner told Mara she hadn’t slept either.“You look like death,” Kira said.“I feel like death,” Mara corrected. “Or whatever comes after.”Kira crouched in front of her. “Talk to me.”Mara swallowed. “He said I

  • I Was Promised To The Vampire King   THE NIGHT THE STARS BLED

Mara woke up to the feeling that something had crawled under her skin and decided to stay. Her bones ached, a deep, throbbing pressure like a storm front pushing from the inside out. Her muscles felt too tight for her body. Even her teeth hurt, a dull pressure in her jaw that made her want to grind them together.Kira was already up, sitting cross-legged on her own bed with a half-braided section of hair and three different charm bracelets spread out around her. A thin strand of magic floated above her palm, twisting lazily into different shapes.“You look like death,” Kira said conversationally as Mara groaned and pushed herself upright.“Happy birthday to me,” Mara muttered.Kira’s eyes softened. “Oh. Right. Forty today?”Mara threw a pillow at her.“Twenty-one,” she said, rubbing at her arms. Her skin was hypersensitive; even the brush of the thin blanket had felt like sandpaper. “Which feels like forty.”“Twenty-one is prime.” Kira flicked her fingers; the floating strand of magic

  • I Was Promised To The Vampire King   The Last Night Before Midnight

By the time dusk bruised the sky in purples and ash, Mara had run out of excuses not to go.The message spell had reached her an hour earlier, ink flaring across her assignment slate in Valen’s sharp, elegant hand:TRAINING CHAMBER. DUSK.– VNo title. No please. Just his constant assumption that she’d obey. She told herself she was only going so she didn’t end up in chains—or worse—by morning. Definitely not because part of her wanted to know what would happen when she and the King were alone in a room with nothing between them except her magic and his patience. The corridor outside the training chamber was quiet. The sigil-carved door loomed ahead, dark wood banded with iron, the air around it humming faintly with wards. Shadows gathered at the edges like they were holding their breath.Mara flexed her fingers, wiped her palms on her stupidly short skirt, and pushed the door open. The chamber beyond was wide and high, stone walls curving up to a vaulted ceiling. Pale tiles covered t

  • I Was Promised To The Vampire King   Jealousy Burns Cold

Mara told herself she was not avoiding the east wing. She was simply… rerouting her tasks with strategic efficiency.Totally different. She cleaned the stairwells twice. Scrubbed a perfectly spotless tapestry rail until her arms ached. Sorted the cleaning supplies in the little linen alcove outside Valen’s private hall by color, then by size, then by completely made-up magical volatility rating.Anything to avoid walking past the door she’d seen standing open.Anything to avoid remembering the sound of that woman’s throat under his mouth.Of course, the castle didn’t care about her avoidance strategies.By midafternoon, her assignment slate updated itself with a faint shimmer of red sigils across the surface:EAST WING – OUTER CORRIDORSPERSONAL WING – WINDOW RAILS, FLOOR RUNESSUPERVISING AUTHORITY: KING VALENMara closed her eyes and thunked the slate lightly against her forehead.“Problem?” asked a dry voice behind her.She glanced back. Kira stood in the doorway of the alcove, arm
