Chapter 1

I stared at the word "Goods" on the screen. I hadn't even realized that I was holding my breath.

A delivery? What was being delivered? What were the goods?

My thoughts spiraled, but some stubborn part of me kept trying to make excuses for Dad.

Maybe we'd landed some huge business deal. Maybe he'd sold something expensive.

Dad loved me.

Just last month, when I'd accidentally scratched the back of my hand with my fingernail, he'd immediately hired a top skincare specialist to make sure that it wouldn't leave a mark.

For 18 years, I'd given up everything a normal kid enjoyed so I wouldn't disappoint him.

While my brother, Michael Hollister, devoured greasy fried chicken, I sat alone in the training room eating boiled vegetables without a drop of oil.

While he spent weekends racing around amusement parks, I was pinned to the floor by a personal trainer, enduring agonizing stretches to perfect my posture.

Thus, how could they possibly be talking about me?

The next morning, Dad walked into my room carrying a freshly made smoothie bowl.

"Come on, Evan. Eat it while it's fresh. I had made it just for you. It'll do wonders for your health."

He smiled warmly and brushed the hair away from my forehead.

Staring into his gentle eyes, I tested the waters. "Who was that guy last night? And that huge payment… Are we selling him something?"

Dad's hand froze around the spoon. The metal spoon struck the edge of the bowl with a sharp clink.

The shock lasted only a second before his smile returned.

"Since when do kids worry about business?" he said with a chuckle. "That's Ian Sullivan, the eldest son of the Sullivan family. He's going to be one of our biggest clients. Just keep doing what you're told and stay healthy. I promise you'll have a life of luxury."

The more he dodged the question, the more uneasy I became.

That night, I lay awake in bed.

A nagging feeling finally drove me out of bed. I crept upstairs and stopped outside the study.

The door wasn't fully closed. Michael's impatient voice drifted through the crack in the door.

"Dad, when is he finally going into surgery? It's taking too long! When am I getting the ten-million-dollar limited-edition sports car the Sullivans promised me?"

My heart lurched.

Then, I heard Dad's merciless voice. He sounded nothing like the man I'd spoken to that morning. "What's the rush? The Sullivans are even more nervous than we are. He'll have his final physical checkup tomorrow. Once they confirm that everything's perfect, we'll send him over.

"Don't let him get suspicious now. If this deal falls through, this family's over."

I clamped both hands over my mouth, forcing myself not to make a sound. Tears splashed onto the back of my hands.

I really was getting sold.

18 years of meticulous care hadn't been love. I'd simply been raised to fetch a higher price.

My whole body shook as I stumbled back toward my room. Just as I reached for the door, a wave of terror washed over me.

The door I was sure I had closed was now slightly ajar, and a pair of cloudy eyes stared straight at me through the narrow gap.

They now stared at him with nothing but disgust. Then, he stared at my emotionless face. Whatever hope he had left was shattered."Evan! Evan, please save me!"He dropped to his knees, crawling toward me and reaching for the leg of my pants. "I made a terrible mistake! I raised you for 18 years! Just tell the police it's all been a misunderstanding. Please forgive me."He sobbed as he repeatedly slapped himself across the face.I took a step back before he could touch me."You raised me just to sell me. The following evening, the charity dinner was in full swing in the ballroom on the top floor of the hotel.Ian sat in a wheelchair dressed in a crisp white suit. He smiled as he accepted the compliments and well-wishes from people.Among the crowd, Dad and Michael were impossible to miss.Dad wore a custom-tailored suit embroidered with gold thread and had an oversized emerald ring gleaming on his thumb. He looked like someone desperate to prove he belonged in the circle."Mr. Sullivan, you look fantastic. My son Evan's studying abroad now," he said with a broad grin as he patted his stomach. "He's always been such a good kid. He's always thinking of his old man."The lie rolled off his tongue without the slightest hesitation.Meanwhile, Michael nursed a glass of champagne while showing off photos of his brand-new Ferrari to a group of rich kids."Five million dollars? Three days later, the Hollister residence was buzzing with excitement."Dad, the money's here! Every last penny of the 50 million dollars!"Michael raced around the living room with his phone in hand. His face was flushed with excitement. "The Sullivans really don't mess around. They buy a life as if picking up groceries."Dad lounged on a leather couch, dressed head to toe in designer labels from a recent shopping spree. An expensive sheet mask covered his face."Calm down," he huffed, even though the grin tugging at his lips only grew wider. "I told you that useless boy was born to pave the way for this family. If I hadn't spent the last ten years keeping him in perfect condition, do you think anyone would've paid this much for him?""You're absolutely right, Dad."Michael snatched up his car keys. "My limited-edition Ferrari finally arrived at the dealership. I'm going to pick it up now. Then, I'm renting the most exclusive club in the city tonight to celebrate.""Go have fun

A sharp pain shot through my chest. I jerked awake, gasping for air.My vision slowly came into focus. Above me was a pristine white ceiling surrounded by expensive medical equipment.I instinctively reached for my chest. There were no bandages or stitches. All I felt was my heart pounding steadily inside my ribcage.I was alive. My heart was still mine."Stop checking. Nobody wants your lousy heart anymore," said a female voice from beside my bed.I turned my head. Saddie was sitting on the couch with one leg crossed over the other. She absently flipped a solid gold lighter open and shut. The flame flickered across her elegant features."Ms. Sullivan…" I said, struggling to sit upright. "Thank you for seeing my email and coming to save me.""Your email?"Saddie snorted. "Are you really that sheltered, Evan? Did you actually think that pathetic cry for help ever got sent?"I froze. "What do you mean?""Your father had your home's internet locked down with a firewall. The seco

Michael looked at me as if I were an idiot."Are you really this stupid, or are you just playing dumb? Why would Dad love you?" he asked, laughing mockingly. "I'm the one he loves.
