Chapter 2

Autor: Fortune Paws
I froze with my fork hovering over the plate.

The steak looked delicious, but I had lost my appetite.

I set down my knife and fork.

“Then I’m done here. Enjoy your dinner.”

Tracey quickly caught my arm.

“Helen, don’t go. I said dinner was on me. Nobody has to split anything.”

Barney’s expression darkened.

“You’re not paying for anything.”

Then he turned to me.

“You were happy to come when Tracey was paying, but now that you have to chip in, you’re leaving? Did you only come to mooch a free dinner off your little sister?”

Ethan frowned too.

“Helen, don’t ruin the evening. Skip a couple of lattes, and you’ll have enough to cover your share.”

I almost laughed.

I could barely afford three meals a day. Where was I supposed to find money for lattes?

“Money’s tight. I can’t afford to split this bill,” I said calmly while standing up.

With that, I walked out of the restaurant.

I had barely reached the bottom of the steps when Ethan came after me.

“What was that about? The card I gave Tracey has a $5,000 monthly limit, and I heard your parents give her another $5,000 a month.”

He stared at me, puzzled. “Aren’t you supposed to get the same? What have you been spending it all on?”

His confusion seemed genuine. He actually believed that I had been getting that money.

Clinging to one last shred of hope, I patiently explained, “My parents sent both allowances to Tracey. The cards you and Barney got for us both went to her too. I haven’t received a cent.”

His grip on my hand loosened.

His frown deepened.

“If you spent it all, just say so. You don’t have to make up a story like that.”

I stared at him.

He only sounded more certain as he went on.

“Barney told me he got you a card. Tracey said the only card she received was mine, and your parents have always treated you both fairly. Why would they give her both allowances?”

The last of my hope died. I sneered and said, “Believe what you want.”

My stomach growled all the way back to the campus dining hall.

I was used to going hungry, but tonight, it hurt in a way it usually did not.

When the cool night air touched my wet cheeks, I realized I had been crying.

Ethan had not always been like this.

He was a few years older than me. When we were little, he was small and scrawny. The other kids in the neighborhood never wanted him around.

Tracey was always tagging along after Barney. She never paid Ethan any attention either.

I was the only one who went looking for him every day. I had no one else to play with, either.

Later, he and Barney got into the same college.

They grew closer and eventually started a business together.

Ethan made plenty of friends and often came over to our house for the holidays.

I missed having him to myself, but I was happy for him too.

The boy who had once only had me finally had other people who liked him.

Before I started college, Ethan and I had even made a promise.

Once I enrolled, we would officially start dating.

However, later, he told Barney, “Your family’s always been so careful to keep things fair. If I start dating Helen while Tracey’s still single, she’s going to feel left out. Helen and I should hold off for now.”

Had my family ever actually been fair?

Ethan was smart enough to see what was happening.

He just chose to believe the version that suited him more.

I bought a plain baked potato, the cheapest thing on the dining hall menu, and ate it through my tears.

It was almost ten by the time I got back to my dorm.

When I went to brush my teeth, I found there was barely any toothpaste left.

I squeezed the tube for several minutes before I managed to get a little out.

Outside the bathroom, my roommate Jenny Powell was chatting with the others. She sounded envious.

“Did you guys see the dorm group chat? Someone’s selling a brand-new bath and body gift set. Apparently, her parents didn’t check with each other, and each sent her the exact same one.”

I stopped short.

As I passed behind her, I stole a casual glance at her phone.

Sure enough, the girl who had received two gift sets was Tracey.

I quietly went back to my desk.

Opening my cabinet, I shook the last few drops of moisturizer out of a sample bottle.

Then I opened my shopping app and ordered a $27 tub of lotion.

A little while later, Jenny came back carrying a large shopping bag.

“Look what I got!”

She excitedly pulled out the items one by one.

“This toner and moisturizer set usually costs a few hundred dollars. There are sheet masks and a cleanser too. Everything’s brand-new.”

Tears welled up in my eyes again.

I quickly lowered my head and pretended to scroll through my phone.

Then I spotted a message I had no memory of seeing, even though it was marked as read.

[Helen, the college has an international exchange program starting over spring break. Would you be interested?]

Back in school, I threw myself into physics.I still posted on my account, but less and less often. When followers asked for an update, I would post a photo from the lab.[Busy with a research project. I’ll post when I can.]Sponsorship offers filled my inbox, but I only accepted a few that felt right. Most days, I was in the lab collecting and analyzing data with my professor while preparing my applications for graduate school. When my professor asked what I wanted to do next, I answered without hesitation for the first time.“I want to be a researcher.”For so long, I had chased every paycheck just to survive.I could finally afford to pursue what I loved.Mom, Dad, and Barney still would not leave me alone. They kept messaging me from different numbers.[Helen, you’re so busy now. Why let your account sit idle when Barney could run it for you?][We’re family. You know we’d never do anything to hurt you.][Don’t be stubborn. Opportunities to make this kind of money won’

Mom stared at the scholarship email. It took her a while to speak.“But research is such hard work.”Dad frowned, clearly unconvinced.“You could make money much faster online. Audiences move on. Now’s the time to make the most of yours.”Barney tried to reason with me.“Helen, we’re looking out for you. Stop assuming the worst of your own family.”I looked at them and smiled.“Research has never made me as miserable as being your family.”The smiles vanished from their faces.I turned away and wheeled my suitcase toward the airport exit.I had almost reached the doors when Ethan hurried after me and stepped into my path.“Helen, I’m not like them. They came because of your account. I came because of you.”I stopped and looked at the face I had loved for more than ten years. In the past, I thought he was a perfect guy. But his sincerity at present looked like an act. The sight of him made my stomach turn.Ethan seemed to think I still saw him the way I used to.He moved

As my year abroad drew to a close, my suitcase was much heavier than when I had arrived.Inside were a memory book from my labmates, a recommendation letter my professor had written for me, and an invitation to join a summer research program. My account had accumulated a million followers. I was earning more from ads than I had ever imagined. It was early evening when my flight landed back home.I wheeled my suitcase through arrivals and immediately spotted four familiar faces in the crowd.Mom held an enormous bouquet.Dad carried a gift box.Several shopping bags sat at Barney’s feet, while Ethan had his hands full too.Mom reached me first and tried to press the flowers into my arms.“Helen, you’ve lost weight. You look beautiful.”I glanced at the flowers.Pink roses. Tracey’s favorites.I did not take them. “I’m allergic to pollen.”Mom’s smile faltered.Dad quickly held out his gift box.“Forget the flowers. We’re just glad you’re home. I got you a watch. You’re al

The next few months flew by.I settled in faster than I had expected. At first, I struggled to follow some of the terms in my lectures. I read ahead before class, then replayed the recordings late into the night. One day in physics class, the professor filled the board with equations and asked if anyone could work out the final step. The room stayed quiet for a few seconds.I raised my hand and carefully walked the class through my solution in halting English. He smiled at me.“Helen, could you stay behind after class?”When everyone else had left, he handed me an application for a lab assistant position.“That was an elegant solution. Would you be interested in working in my lab?”I wanted to jump for joy, but I managed to nod calmly.“Absolutely.”My scholarship and lab stipend came through soon after.Even so, rent, transportation, and insurance added up fast.I kept working outside of class.Nobody wanted the late shifts at the convenience store, so I took them and wo

I had already answered that question once. I did not owe him the same answer again.Besides, he must have known the truth, or he would not have asked. So I hung up.A little later, Ethan sent me a message.[I checked. You really didn’t get a cent.]Then a message from Tracey appeared.[What did you say to Ethan?][He just blew up at everyone. We were having a nice time, and now you’ve ruined the whole trip.]Mom soon messaged me too.[Helen, when are you going to grow up?][You’re off overseas while the rest of us are left dealing with this mess. Did you have to start a family fight?]Barney had never had much patience with me. He sent a voice message. When I played it, I could hear him struggling to keep his temper.“You’ve really outdone yourself, Helen. Ethan just demanded to see my credit card account and made Mom and Dad show him their bank transfers. Now Tracey’s in tears. Happy?”Between all their messages, I pieced together what had happened. After I hung up, Eth

We landed just after dawn.I cleared immigration with the program coordinator, then took a bus to the host university. Nearly an hour passed before I finally had a chance to check my phone. There were dozens of unread messages in the family group chat. The first was from Barney.[Helen, wasn’t your train supposed to be in by now?]A few minutes later, he had sent another.[The hotel says you haven’t checked in. Where are you?]Ethan’s message came next.[Helen, stop sulking. Everyone’s waiting for you so we can have dinner. You’re ruining the mood.]Then Mom and Dad joined in.[Your sister’s been asking about you all day. Don’t make her worry.][We’re family. Why can’t we just talk this out?]Reading their messages, I suddenly felt drained. The exhaustion from more than ten hours in the air seemed to catch up with me all at once.I leaned against the door frame of my new dorm room and typed a reply.[Don’t wait for me. I’m overseas with the university’s exchange program.
