Chapter 1

My comment had been up for less than ten seconds.

The comment section, which had been full of [Need a sugar baby?] and [Please adopt me!], suddenly went quiet.

Then came a flood of question marks.

[???]

[Her older sister? Seriously?]

[One sister gets $20,000 for the week, and the other gets $32? Guess we know who the favorite is.]

Some people even tagged my sister and demanded an explanation.

As I stared at the comments, the page suddenly refreshed itself.

When I tried to open the post again, all I got was, [This post has been deleted.]

Less than two minutes later, over a dozen new messages popped up in the family group chat.

Tracey Darrow sent the first one.

[Helen, I’ll cancel the trip. Please don’t be mad.]

Then came four screenshots confirming the refunds.

She had sent back every cent of the $5,000 each of our parents, our brother, Barney Darrow, and Ethan Colbert had given her.

Her willingness to give up the trip only made everyone feel worse for her.

Mom was the first to respond. She tagged me directly.

[@Helen You little brat! What have you been telling people?]

[What’s this about surviving seven days on $32? You’re making it sound like we abuse you!]

[We give you an allowance AND a credit card. Most college kids would kill to have it as good as you!]

Whenever I had asked them individually, they had passed me off to someone else.

This time, I asked them all in the group chat.

[Really? Then where’s my allowance? And where’s my card?]

The chat went quiet for a moment.

Then Dad sent a voice message.

“So we give you money, and this is the thanks we get? We already sent it. If you blew through it, that’s your problem. Don’t blame your parents.”

I was about to argue when Barney stepped in to smooth things over.

[Enough. Don’t turn this into a whole thing.]

[Tracey worked hard in the orientation camp and won an award. We gave her that $20,000 so she could get away and relax over spring break.]

Ethan, our childhood friend, joined in.

[Helen, your parents have always treated you both fairly.]

[Tracey got the money because she won an award. When you win something, I’m sure they’ll do the same for you.]

Mom immediately chimed in.

[Exactly. When have we ever played favorites?]

[If you’d also won that award, I would’ve given you just as much.]

[But you didn’t!]

Easy for her to say.

She seemed to have forgotten that I never even had a chance to join the orientation camp.

The summer before college, my parents had signed us both up for driving lessons, supposedly because they wanted to “treat us equally.”

Except Tracey’s lessons cost $4,500. Mine cost $500.

The cars at my driving school were old wrecks that rattled so badly they felt ready to fall apart.

On my third lesson, the brakes failed, and the car slammed into a wall.

The crash broke my right leg.

I was still in a cast when the semester started.

What was even more absurd was that my medical bills came to $5,000, so my parents gave Tracey another $5,000, just to “keep things fair.”

None of the four would take Tracey’s money. They sent it all straight back.

Ethan stepped in again to smooth things over.

[How about this? Tracey keeps the money and takes us all out to dinner to celebrate. Then we put this behind us. Sound good?]

I was about to say I would pass, but then I remembered I had been scraping by on meatless meals for over a week. If Tracey was paying, we were bound to end up at a fancy restaurant.

So I swallowed my pride.

[Okay.]

The next day, I deliberately skipped lunch.

I felt rather pleased with myself. Not only would I have room for more food that evening, but I had also saved myself the cost of a meal.

When I reached the restaurant, Barney and Ethan were already there.

Each had a beautifully wrapped gift box beside him.

Tracey’s eyes lit up as she opened them.

“Barney, how did you know I wanted this? Ethan, this has been on my wishlist forever!”

I sat beside them in silence. I was looking forward to dinner, but then Ethan turned to me.

“Helen, Barney and I were supposed to get you girls a present each, but we didn’t check with each other, and we both ended up buying for Tracey. We’ll make it up to you next time, okay?”

It had always been like this.

Somehow, they always ended up buying both presents for Tracey.

At first, I had believed it was an honest mix-up.

After enough times, I had figured it out.

It was just like the allowance and the credit card. No one had ever intended to give me one either.

“Sure,” I replied.

I did not even care about presents anymore.

I just wanted to eat.

The steaks arrived a few minutes later.

My mouth watered as I picked up my knife and fork, ready to dig in.

Then Ethan ruined the moment again. “By the way, the four of us should split the bill. This place isn’t cheap, and Tracey’s the youngest. We can’t actually let her pay for all of us, can we?”

Back in school, I threw myself into physics.I still posted on my account, but less and less often. When followers asked for an update, I would post a photo from the lab.[Busy with a research project. I’ll post when I can.]Sponsorship offers filled my inbox, but I only accepted a few that felt right. Most days, I was in the lab collecting and analyzing data with my professor while preparing my applications for graduate school. When my professor asked what I wanted to do next, I answered without hesitation for the first time.“I want to be a researcher.”For so long, I had chased every paycheck just to survive.I could finally afford to pursue what I loved.Mom, Dad, and Barney still would not leave me alone. They kept messaging me from different numbers.[Helen, you’re so busy now. Why let your account sit idle when Barney could run it for you?][We’re family. You know we’d never do anything to hurt you.][Don’t be stubborn. Opportunities to make this kind of money won’

Mom stared at the scholarship email. It took her a while to speak.“But research is such hard work.”Dad frowned, clearly unconvinced.“You could make money much faster online. Audiences move on. Now’s the time to make the most of yours.”Barney tried to reason with me.“Helen, we’re looking out for you. Stop assuming the worst of your own family.”I looked at them and smiled.“Research has never made me as miserable as being your family.”The smiles vanished from their faces.I turned away and wheeled my suitcase toward the airport exit.I had almost reached the doors when Ethan hurried after me and stepped into my path.“Helen, I’m not like them. They came because of your account. I came because of you.”I stopped and looked at the face I had loved for more than ten years. In the past, I thought he was a perfect guy. But his sincerity at present looked like an act. The sight of him made my stomach turn.Ethan seemed to think I still saw him the way I used to.He moved

As my year abroad drew to a close, my suitcase was much heavier than when I had arrived.Inside were a memory book from my labmates, a recommendation letter my professor had written for me, and an invitation to join a summer research program. My account had accumulated a million followers. I was earning more from ads than I had ever imagined. It was early evening when my flight landed back home.I wheeled my suitcase through arrivals and immediately spotted four familiar faces in the crowd.Mom held an enormous bouquet.Dad carried a gift box.Several shopping bags sat at Barney’s feet, while Ethan had his hands full too.Mom reached me first and tried to press the flowers into my arms.“Helen, you’ve lost weight. You look beautiful.”I glanced at the flowers.Pink roses. Tracey’s favorites.I did not take them. “I’m allergic to pollen.”Mom’s smile faltered.Dad quickly held out his gift box.“Forget the flowers. We’re just glad you’re home. I got you a watch. You’re al

The next few months flew by.I settled in faster than I had expected. At first, I struggled to follow some of the terms in my lectures. I read ahead before class, then replayed the recordings late into the night. One day in physics class, the professor filled the board with equations and asked if anyone could work out the final step. The room stayed quiet for a few seconds.I raised my hand and carefully walked the class through my solution in halting English. He smiled at me.“Helen, could you stay behind after class?”When everyone else had left, he handed me an application for a lab assistant position.“That was an elegant solution. Would you be interested in working in my lab?”I wanted to jump for joy, but I managed to nod calmly.“Absolutely.”My scholarship and lab stipend came through soon after.Even so, rent, transportation, and insurance added up fast.I kept working outside of class.Nobody wanted the late shifts at the convenience store, so I took them and wo

I had already answered that question once. I did not owe him the same answer again.Besides, he must have known the truth, or he would not have asked. So I hung up.A little later, Ethan sent me a message.[I checked. You really didn’t get a cent.]Then a message from Tracey appeared.[What did you say to Ethan?][He just blew up at everyone. We were having a nice time, and now you’ve ruined the whole trip.]Mom soon messaged me too.[Helen, when are you going to grow up?][You’re off overseas while the rest of us are left dealing with this mess. Did you have to start a family fight?]Barney had never had much patience with me. He sent a voice message. When I played it, I could hear him struggling to keep his temper.“You’ve really outdone yourself, Helen. Ethan just demanded to see my credit card account and made Mom and Dad show him their bank transfers. Now Tracey’s in tears. Happy?”Between all their messages, I pieced together what had happened. After I hung up, Eth

We landed just after dawn.I cleared immigration with the program coordinator, then took a bus to the host university. Nearly an hour passed before I finally had a chance to check my phone. There were dozens of unread messages in the family group chat. The first was from Barney.[Helen, wasn’t your train supposed to be in by now?]A few minutes later, he had sent another.[The hotel says you haven’t checked in. Where are you?]Ethan’s message came next.[Helen, stop sulking. Everyone’s waiting for you so we can have dinner. You’re ruining the mood.]Then Mom and Dad joined in.[Your sister’s been asking about you all day. Don’t make her worry.][We’re family. Why can’t we just talk this out?]Reading their messages, I suddenly felt drained. The exhaustion from more than ten hours in the air seemed to catch up with me all at once.I leaned against the door frame of my new dorm room and typed a reply.[Don’t wait for me. I’m overseas with the university’s exchange program.
