Chapter 2

Author: Bagel
"Aurora, that's enough! It was just a stupid post! Why do you have to be so petty?"

"You made Bella cry. Apologize to her. Now."

My heart felt like it had been dragged into an abyss.

I had done nothing, yet I was the one who had to make amends.

My voice was coated in a layer of frost. "Apologize to her? For what? What did I do wrong?"

Enzo, ever the hothead, sounded like a cornered animal. "You have the nerve to talk back? In this house, making Bella cry is crossing the line!"

"I'll count to three. Apologize now! Or you'll answer to me when I get back!"

My mother's voice came from the background.

"Enzo, don't talk to Aurora like that. She's your sister."

Then, speaking into the phone, she said, "Aurora, your brother has always been hot-headed, you know that. Don't take it personally."

"Tonight was just a spur-of-the-moment dinner. We didn't call you because we thought you'd be bored. Don't read too much into it."

My mother's flawlessly biased words were like a blunt instrument to my chest, crushing it over and over.

After a long pause, I spoke coldly.

"You don't have to explain. After all, you're the real family."

"There's no place for me in this house anymore."

It was the truth, but my words hit a nerve. My mother's voice suddenly shot up an octave.

"Aurora! How can you say that?"

"So we didn't invite you to one dinner? Is that a reason to make such a scene?"

"What do you want to eat? I'll have my secretary wire money to your account. Go to that Michelin-starred place on the east side, the most expensive one."

Before she finished, my phone screen lit up. A sum large enough to buy a restaurant was deposited into my account.

"There. I've settled the bill. This matter is closed. Don't bring any more shame on this family."

She hung up before I could say a word. This time, I laughed out loud.

Was she trying to pay off a beggar?

Forget it. A family like this, a love like this… I didn't want it anymore.

I pulled up my contact list and dialed my best friend Jessy's number. "That key position at your fashion house you offered me… is it still open?"

There was almost no hesitation on the other end.

"Of course it is!"

"Aurora, I've been waiting three years for you to say that."

"When are you coming? I'll have a driver and the private jet on standby."

I didn't hesitate for a second. "Tomorrow. The sooner, the better."

After the call, the ache in my chest finally began to subside.

I once believed my life's purpose was loyalty to my family, to fulfill what I saw as the duties of a mafia princess.

I thought staying in the Moretti manor, by my parents' and brother's side, was my destiny.

But now, I felt a sense of release. All my past devotion had been meaningless.

It was late when the four of them returned to the manor. The smell of champagne and cigars wafted up the spiral staircase.

At that moment, I was tossing a few casual outfits into a minimalist suitcase.

Seeing this, my parents' faces hardened.

My mother rushed over, snatched the trench coat from my hand, and threw it onto the carpet.

"Aurora, what is this? Are you running away from home?"

"Didn't I just send you the money? What are you still making a fuss about?"

I bent down, picked up the coat, folded it again, and looked directly at her.

"A fuss? Who's the one making a fuss?"

"I saw the group chat. Did any of you ever consider me part of this family?"

The color drained from my mother's face.

"Aurora, listen to me, that was just your brother talking nonsense. He was drunk…"

I cut her off. "Don't bother. A family like this… I don't want it anymore."

My father, who had been silent until now, finally spoke, each word a condemnation.

"It was just a few jokes in a group chat. What does that prove?"

"You're being shortsighted, Aurora."

I'm shortsighted?

Fine. In their version of events, I was always the one at fault. I was done trying to defend myself.

I said nothing more and continued packing.

But then Bella rushed over, her eyes red-rimmed. "Aurora, did you see what I posted?"

"I'm so sorry, it's all my fault."

"If I hadn't come to this family, you wouldn't be so unhappy…"

She reached for my arm, her tears falling on my skin.

"Sister, please don't be mad at me, okay?"

"If anyone should leave, it should be me. You're the real Moretti daughter… and I'm nobody."

I stepped aside, avoiding her touch. "Stop the act. I'm not buying it."

I had barely used any force, but as if she'd rehearsed it a thousand times, Bella stumbled backward, tumbling toward the grand marble staircase behind her.

Her scream echoed through the entire manor.

Enzo bolted up from downstairs. He saw Bella collapsed at the bottom of the stairs, then looked up to see me standing on the second-floor landing.

His brow furrowed, and a sudden rage flared in his eyes.

He took the stairs three at a time and shoved me, hard.

The force of the impact sent me off balance. I fell backward, and my temple struck the sharp corner of a nearby table.

A sharp pain, then darkness.

Blood trickled down from my temple, seeping into the collar of my shirt.

My own brother, the one I shared blood with, had a look on his face that bordered on satisfaction.

"That's a lesson for you. Don't you ever lay a hand on Bella again!"

"We'll see if you dare try that next time!"

Seeing the blood on the floor, a flicker of instinctual panic crossed my mother's eyes.

She took half a step toward me.

But then Bella started crying again, and her attention snapped right back to her.

"Mama… maybe I should just leave. If I stay, I'll only cause trouble between everyone…"

I clenched the metal chain of my handbag and took a deep breath."Mother, I'm doing well for myself in Europe.""I have my own business, a perfectly secure home, and I don't need anyone to worry about me.""But I can't live without you!"I didn't answer. I turned and walked out of the bedroom.Enzo hurried after me into the hallway. "Aurora, stay. Father and Mother are both full of regret.""They... they miss you."I gave a cold laugh. "Miss me? Miss having me back to play the 'sensible' Principessa?"He opened his mouth but couldn't force out a single word.Stepping out of the heavily guarded manor, the sunlight felt harsh on my eyes.My phone vibrated. It was a message from Jessy. "Big fish on the line over here. When are you back in the game?"I typed on the screen, "See you tomorrow morning."That night, I didn't stay at the manor. I booked a suite at a private club in the city.Just after midnight, the doorbell rang.I opened the door. My father was standing there alone. He had on

  • I Was The Outsider   Chapter 7

When my mother saw the viral screenshots, she froze. She pushed the encrypted phone in front of Bella and asked her if it was true.Bella's first reaction was to deny it, claiming the accounts weren't hers, that someone was deliberately faking them to frame her and destroy the Moretti family. But one of the accounts was linked to a private communication device my father had personally given her three years ago, a detail the family's tech people traced in no time.Faced with ironclad proof, my mother broke down sobbing. She cried so hard she could barely breathe, shaking her head."Bella, have we not been good to you? I brought you in from the streets. I let you wear my daughter's gowns, my daughter's jewels. We called you our little princess. Why would you do this?""Aurora is the child I raised, the true blood of the Moretti family. How dare you?"Bella cried too.Only this time, it wasn't her usual, carefully crafted performance. It was true hysteria."Donna, I was just so scared!""

If this had happened in the past, I probably would have curled up under the covers and cried all night.I would have blamed myself for causing trouble for my family again. But now, I just found the whole performance laughable.Bella always used the same trick: paint herself as the victim and make everyone believe that I was the one at fault. It was a trick that worked everywhere. But I never expected that an even crueler truth was waiting for me.That day, Jessy pushed open my office door and placed a cup of espresso in front of me. She looked at me, her expression complicated.I looked up. It was rare for Jessy to speak in such a serious tone. She hesitated, then told me what my mother had said to her. "My own daughter is just spoiled. If she were half as composed as Bella, I wouldn't be in this mess."I stared at the fine golden crema in the cup, and a chill spread from my fingertips. So that was it. In my mother’s heart, that’s who I was.Even though she wasn't my birth mother, she

I clutched the phone, my voice betraying nothing when I finally spoke. Her voice cracked. "Say something! Where are you? Mama will send someone to get you."My tone was flat. "Don't bother. I'm in Europe. I won't be returning to the manor anytime soon."There was silence on the other end for a few seconds, followed by a gasp of disbelief."What do you mean? You flew across the Atlantic by yourself? Are you insane? A young woman alone, without protection..."I cut her off. "Mother, I'm not asking for your permission. I'm informing you."Her voice shot up. "Aurora Moretti!""You get back here right now! What is this behavior? Over one dinner? You're making this scene over one dinner?"I didn't reply. She must have thought I was softening, because her tone softened too."Alright, just come home. I'll have the chef make you that risotto you loved as a child.""Enzo knows he was wrong, too. Just come home, and we can be a family again."The word "family" almost made me laugh."Mother, I hav

  • I Was The Outsider   Chapter 4

I pushed myself up and walked out, one step at a time.I took out my phone and called for a car. "The private terminal," I told the driver. The driver glanced at me in the rearview mirror, his eyes catching my pale face and the dried blood at my temple. He hesitated, asking if I wanted to go to the hospital first, or maybe call the police.I shook my head and repeated my destination.Outside the window, the city's neon lights blurred into streaks, retreating in searing ribbons of color. It reminded me of when I was seven, when my mother held my hand as we walked down the long corridor of the family garden, asking me to count the row of bronze wall lamps.Back then, she would stroke my hair and say, "Aurora is always so composed. You are your mother's greatest pride.""My little princess, you're the one Mama loves most in this world."Thinking back on it now, it all felt absurd. When I arrived at the VIP terminal, it was still a few hours before my flight was cleared for departure.Jess

My mother forgot everything else and turned to pull Bella into her arms."Don't be silly, my child. This is your home. No one can ever make you leave.""We're the only family you have now."She looked back at me, my head bleeding, her eyes filled with a deep, impenetrable disappointment."Aurora, you've gone too far this time.""As a princess of the Moretti family, you shouldn't act like this. I'm very disappointed in you, Aurora."As the crimson blood ran down my cheek, a grim smile touched my lips. She wanted me to yield to Bella in all things. I did.She wanted me to be sensible, to be understanding. I was.And now, I couldn't imagine what she was disappointed in.Was she disappointed that I'd stopped playing the smiling puppet for Bella's amusement, that I'd failed to maintain the poised facade of a Principessa?Or was she disappointed that once I saw through their false affection and realized they never considered me family, I refused to play along with their clumsy charade? But I
