Chapter 4

Author: Bagel
I pushed myself up and walked out, one step at a time.

I took out my phone and called for a car. "The private terminal," I told the driver.

The driver glanced at me in the rearview mirror, his eyes catching my pale face and the dried blood at my temple.

He hesitated, asking if I wanted to go to the hospital first, or maybe call the police.

I shook my head and repeated my destination.

Outside the window, the city's neon lights blurred into streaks, retreating in searing ribbons of color.

I clenched the metal chain of my handbag and took a deep breath."Mother, I'm doing well for myself in Europe.""I have my own business, a perfectly secure home, and I don't need anyone to worry about me.""But I can't live without you!"I didn't answer. I turned and walked out of the bedroom.Enzo hurried after me into the hallway. "Aurora, stay. Father and Mother are both full of regret.""They... they miss you."I gave a cold laugh. "Miss me? Miss having me back to play the 'sensible' Principessa?"He opened his mouth but couldn't force out a single word.Stepping out of the heavily guarded manor, the sunlight felt harsh on my eyes.My phone vibrated. It was a message from Jessy. "Big fish on the line over here. When are you back in the game?"I typed on the screen, "See you tomorrow morning."That night, I didn't stay at the manor. I booked a suite at a private club in the city.Just after midnight, the doorbell rang.I opened the door. My father was standing there alone. He had on

  • I Was The Outsider   Chapter 7

When my mother saw the viral screenshots, she froze. She pushed the encrypted phone in front of Bella and asked her if it was true.Bella's first reaction was to deny it, claiming the accounts weren't hers, that someone was deliberately faking them to frame her and destroy the Moretti family. But one of the accounts was linked to a private communication device my father had personally given her three years ago, a detail the family's tech people traced in no time.Faced with ironclad proof, my mother broke down sobbing. She cried so hard she could barely breathe, shaking her head."Bella, have we not been good to you? I brought you in from the streets. I let you wear my daughter's gowns, my daughter's jewels. We called you our little princess. Why would you do this?""Aurora is the child I raised, the true blood of the Moretti family. How dare you?"Bella cried too.Only this time, it wasn't her usual, carefully crafted performance. It was true hysteria."Donna, I was just so scared!""

If this had happened in the past, I probably would have curled up under the covers and cried all night.I would have blamed myself for causing trouble for my family again. But now, I just found the whole performance laughable.Bella always used the same trick: paint herself as the victim and make everyone believe that I was the one at fault. It was a trick that worked everywhere. But I never expected that an even crueler truth was waiting for me.That day, Jessy pushed open my office door and placed a cup of espresso in front of me. She looked at me, her expression complicated.I looked up. It was rare for Jessy to speak in such a serious tone. She hesitated, then told me what my mother had said to her. "My own daughter is just spoiled. If she were half as composed as Bella, I wouldn't be in this mess."I stared at the fine golden crema in the cup, and a chill spread from my fingertips. So that was it. In my mother’s heart, that’s who I was.Even though she wasn't my birth mother, she

I clutched the phone, my voice betraying nothing when I finally spoke. Her voice cracked. "Say something! Where are you? Mama will send someone to get you."My tone was flat. "Don't bother. I'm in Europe. I won't be returning to the manor anytime soon."There was silence on the other end for a few seconds, followed by a gasp of disbelief."What do you mean? You flew across the Atlantic by yourself? Are you insane? A young woman alone, without protection..."I cut her off. "Mother, I'm not asking for your permission. I'm informing you."Her voice shot up. "Aurora Moretti!""You get back here right now! What is this behavior? Over one dinner? You're making this scene over one dinner?"I didn't reply. She must have thought I was softening, because her tone softened too."Alright, just come home. I'll have the chef make you that risotto you loved as a child.""Enzo knows he was wrong, too. Just come home, and we can be a family again."The word "family" almost made me laugh."Mother, I hav

You are your mother's greatest pride.""My little princess, you're the one Mama loves most in this world."Thinking back on it now, it all felt absurd. When I arrived at the VIP terminal, it was still a few hours before my flight was cleared for departure.Jess

My mother forgot everything else and turned to pull Bella into her arms."Don't be silly, my child. This is your home. No one can ever make you leave.""We're the only family you have now."She looked back at me, my head bleeding, her eyes filled with a deep, impenetrable disappointment."Aurora, you've gone too far this time.""As a princess of the Moretti family, you shouldn't act like this. I'm very disappointed in you, Aurora."As the crimson blood ran down my cheek, a grim smile touched my lips. She wanted me to yield to Bella in all things. I did.She wanted me to be sensible, to be understanding. I was.And now, I couldn't imagine what she was disappointed in.Was she disappointed that I'd stopped playing the smiling puppet for Bella's amusement, that I'd failed to maintain the poised facade of a Principessa?Or was she disappointed that once I saw through their false affection and realized they never considered me family, I refused to play along with their clumsy charade? But I
