Chapter 3

Author: Iced Coconut
I watched the security camera feed casually and asked, "What do you need so much money for?"

Kayla hesitated before saying, "It's just something urgent. It's hard to explain over the phone. Lend me the money first, and I'll tell you about it later."

"What is it? Give me a quick rundown," I said lazily.

She fell silent for a few seconds, as if she hadn't expected me to press her for details.

In the past, whenever Kayla asked me for something, I never asked why. If she asked for 200,000 dollars, I'd send her 250,000 dollars. If she wanted a new car, I'd hand her the keys the very next day.

And so, she got used to it. So did the rest of my family. They'd gotten so used to it that they thought I was born to support them financially.

"It's for… Harper's party. I'm short on money." Kayla finally told me the truth.

I raised my voice. "Why didn't I know about this?"

Kayla immediately came up with an excuse. "I figured you were busy with work. How could I bother you with something this trivial?"

I nearly laughed out loud.

Just moments ago, she'd been calling me a slut. Now that she needed money, she was suddenly so considerate.

I took a sip of my wine, keeping my voice calm. "I'm not free to wire you any money right now."

"Then, what am I supposed to do? Everyone's waiting here!" Kayla panicked, her voice rising. "Stacy, you have to help me. I'm really desperate this time."

"Use your credit card first."

"My credit card limit won't cover it…"

"Then, use Mom's and Dad's cards. It's not like I won't wire the money to you later."

She sounded doubtful. "You'll pay us back, right?"

I snorted at how ridiculous it was that I had to pay for my own niece's celebration.

Still, I agreed, "Don't worry. As soon as I have some free time, I'll pay you all back."

Reassured, Kayla repeatedly thanked me before hanging up.

But this was just the beginning.

I didn't put my phone down. Instead, I contacted a few people. Then, I called Dan.

"I'll offer 1.5 million dollars. Keep raising the price."

Dan paused briefly before catching on. "But Ms. Upton, what if they really leave?"

"They won't." I smiled. "I have a way to make them stay."

Dan didn't ask any more questions and started making the arrangements.

I put my phone down and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows. Below me, traffic flowed through the brightly lit city.

Every day, countless people got rich overnight, while just as many lost everything in a flash.

And my family was about to become the latter.

…

Down in the banquet hall, Kayla had just finished paying by card and ushering her guests to their seats when Dan walked over once again, the polite smile still on his face.

"Ms. Upton, my apologies. The other client just offered us 1.5 million dollars. If you want to stay, you'll have to pay another million dollars."

Kayla lost her composure and shouted, "Another million dollars? This is daylight robbery! I want a refund now! I'm not holding the party here anymore!"

She turned and headed for the front desk, but then a well-dressed man in a suit suddenly appeared in the doorway.

When the man saw Samuel, he paused, then broke into a smile. "Hey, Samuel, it really is you!"

From then on, things only got worse for my parents. After being kicked out of the hotel, they had no choice but to go home. But when they reached the mansion, Mom froze. Someone had replaced the old lock with a digital one.Dad frowned and rang the doorbell. No one answered, so he called the property. The property manager told him politely, "Mr. Upton, the house ownership has already been transferred. You're no longer the owner."All the color drained from Dad's face. "What did you say? My daughter bought this house for us!""I'm sorry, but we don't know the details either. You'll have to contact the previous owner."Dad called me immediately, but I didn't answer. Mom stood by the door, finally starting to panic. "Could she really have abandoned us?"Dad gripped his phone and gritted his teeth. "She wouldn't dare!"His phone rang then, but it wasn't a call from me. It was a text message from the bank, saying the supplementary credit cards they'd used for years had been deacti

Kayla suddenly remembered what Dan had said earlier, and her head shot up. "Wait. Where's my car?"Before anyone could react, she spun around and ran out. She rushed to the parking garage, frantically searching for her car, but it was nowhere to be found. On the verge of breaking down, she grabbed a security guard and demanded, "Where's my Porsche?""What are you talking about?""The black one! License plate 175888. I parked it here this afternoon!"The security guard scratched his head, then suddenly remembered something. "Oh! It was towed."Kayla was stunned. "Towed? Who the hell gave you permission to do that?"The security guard blinked innocently. "The towing company took it. They said the owner had requested the car be towed to pay off a debt."Kayla was shaking all over. "I'm the owner! When did I ever authorize that?"She yelled so loud the security guard stepped back. He mumbled, "I-I don't know either. The towing company had all the proper paperwork. We had no reason

Downstairs, guests began trickling out of the banquet hall, their faces disappointed and annoyed.A drunk relative, supported by someone else, complained, "Why pretend to be some big shot when you're not? They threw a banquet in a place like this, only to get kicked out before they even served all the dishes. This is the first time in my life that I've seen anything so humiliating.""Exactly! They said two million dollars was nothing to them, but they still couldn't afford it.""They used to show off every time they saw us. Looks like they've finally been put in their place."Those words stung my parents. Dad's face was livid as he quickly explained to a few relatives, "It's not that we can't afford it. Some lunatic insisted on snatching the banquet hall from us and deliberately drove the price up to over two million! "Who in their right mind would spend so much on a single meal? We weren't about to let ourselves get ripped off."The relatives waved their hands awkwardly, pret

Kayla asked, "What do you mean?"I leaned back in my chair and said lightly, "I said I'm not planning to give you any money this time."Kayla stepped forward. She sounded panicked. "Then, how are you going to help me?"I straightened my hair and slowly stood up, speaking as if I were granting her a favor, "I'll keep the price at 2.5 million dollars and not raise it further. Kayla, now you only have to pay two million dollars. Aren't I being generous?"Kayla froze, and after a long moment, she cried out in shock, "You were the crazy person bidding against me all along? Stacy, have you gone insane? Is it fun to mess with me?"I stayed calm despite her anger. I shook my head. "Kayla, we're adults now. I don't play games. I just wanted to show you that without me, you can't even come up with two million. And what did you say about me?"I mimicked her tone and repeated, "No matter how much money she gives us, she still has no class.""Since you think my money is dirty, then I won't g

Kayla froze, the smile on her face slowly fading.Mom and Dad walked in behind her. When they saw me, their expressions changed too."Stacy?" Mom cried out, then acted as if nothing had happened and came toward me with a delighted smile.I didn't share her excitement. Instead, I leaned back in my chair and looked at them. "I heard you were going to send me to someone else's bed just to throw a party for Harper?"Mom's face paled, and she immediately waved her hand. "No way! Don't listen to that nonsense! We just came up to ask the boss for a favor. We had no idea you'd be here."As she spoke, she walked toward me and reached for my arm. "Come on. Let's go downstairs and meet your niece."I stepped aside, dodging her hand. Mom missed, and her smile faltered for a moment.Kayla jumped in quickly, forcing a smile. "Yeah, Stacy, why didn't you tell me you were here? You scared me half to death. I have no idea who that crazy person trying to take the banquet hall from me is. But now

"Mr. Lowe, what are you doing here?" Samuel immediately bent down to hold the man's hand, looking respectful.Andy Lowe said, "Wow, Samuel, I had no idea you were this successful! You actually booked the entire hotel just for your daughter's party. I clearly underestimated you."Samuel scratched his head, looking modest. "Oh, I'm nothing compared to you, Mr. Lowe. Do you want to join us for a couple of drinks?"Andy nodded with a smile. "I have some business to discuss with the hotel owner later, so I'll just have a couple of drinks."Samuel ushered him inside, then turned and grabbed Kayla. "No matter what, we're holding this party! Mr. Lowe is a big name in investment circles. If he gives me a few pointers, we'll be rolling in money."Kayla looked troubled. "But where are we supposed to get a million dollars?""Ask Stacy for it! I'm going inside first!"Samuel hurried after Andy into the banquet hall.Kayla stared at Dan for a second before suddenly asking, "He said your boss
