Chapter 5

Autor: Summer Dream
Before, I would've dodged a cheap move like that without thinking.

Now the silver poison had slowed me down.

I tried to pull back. Too late. The blade sliced across the back of my hand. Black blood welled up.

"Ah!" Velda screamed first. She grabbed her stomach and dropped to the floor. "Zara, why did you shove me? If you don't want fruit, fine—but you can't push my stomach!"

"Stop!"

Eric walked in right then, fresh off the call with the Elder Council.

He saw her on the ground. Thought I'd gone for her stomach.

He rushed over and slapped me across the face. Hard.

Velda threw herself into his arms, sobbing. "It hurts... Eric, is Zara trying to kill our pup?"

He held her tight and looked at me like he wanted me dead. "Zara, you're hopeless! Velda peeled fruit for you out of kindness, and you attack the pup she's carrying?

"You're just jealous! You can't carry a pup, so you go after someone who can!"

My cheek burned.

I looked up at the wolf who once swore he'd protect me.

I wanted to explain. I didn't do it. I wanted to tell him I was dying.

But those eyes held nothing but disgust.

And just like that—I knew.

It didn't matter.

With the last of my strength, I shouted, "Get out!"

"Fine. Very fine."

He scooped Velda into his arms and walked out.

At the door, he paused. "Zara, this is your official warning. Touch Velda again and I'll ask the Elder Council to strip you of your Luna title. A she-wolf who can't control her own body, who lives off jealousy and attacks her pack, doesn't deserve to be Luna."

Their footsteps faded.

The door shut.

I swallowed the blood climbing up my throat.

The ache in my eyes went flat. Empty.

After Eric left, the pain—body and soul—made me want it to end.

I moved on instinct toward the pack's hot spring. The healer had mixed medicine into the water. It dulled the hurt.

Before, whenever I got injured, Eric would carry me there himself.

This time, a spear cut across my path.

Ron.

He was still a pup when I pulled him from a pile of corpses. I taught him to hunt. To fight. Raised him like my own.

He followed Eric and me when we built Moonveil.

Now he was the Alpha's guard captain.

"Sorry, Luna. Go back." He wouldn't meet my eyes. "Alpha's orders. The warm spring belongs to Velda now."

"Velda's?" I pressed my hand to my aching stomach. "She's not hurt. Why does she need it?"

"Her skin's delicate. Alpha wants her bathing there." His voice went flat. "He said you're thick-skinned. Greasy. You'd mess up the water."

"I'm injured..." I looked at the wolf who used to cry over a scratch on my hand when he was just a pup. "Let me soak a little. I won't tell him."

Ron frowned, already over it.

Velda's convoy rolled up in the distance.

He shoved me, like I was nothing.

"Leave. You don't belong here. Move, or I'll make you."

I wasn't ready. I stumbled and hit the ground.

My knees slammed into stone. Pain shot up fast.

Ron didn't even look back. He rushed toward Velda's convoy like he'd been waiting for it.

That's when it clicked.

In this pack—after Eric switched up—

I ranked lower than a stray.

Right then, I had no one.

But the second she got near, Zara's face flashed in his mind."Get out!"Eric shoved her hard."You don't have her scent. No one deserves to look like her. No one is her!"He almost ripped out the innocent wolf's throat.Instead, he threw her out like trash. Then he went to Stormcrown territory. He knelt outside the border for three days. Three nights. No food. No water. Didn't move."Zara, I'm here. Let me in. Please? I know I was wrong... I know... Just let me see you once..."He muttered to the empty air. Dazed. Broken.Daisy couldn't take it anymore. She walked out and pointed at him."Who are you performing for now? Zara's bones are ash. She will never forgive you."Eric looked up, a stupid smile on his face, pointing at empty air."No... she didn't leave... Look. She's right there. She's smiling at me..."That night, he dreamed. In the dream, Zara never lost the pup. Never got poisoned. She was round and glowing, sitting by the fireplace with a pile of fluffy pup

"What did you say?"Eric grabbed the healer by the collar. The healer wiped his sweat. "She's not pregnant. Didn't you ever take her for a real exam?"Eric pressed a hand to his head.Velda's healer friend. In that second, it clicked. She faked the pregnancy to lock him in."You bitch!"He roared and kicked her hard in the stomach. "You filthy liar! You thought you could play me?"Velda curled on the floor, shaking. No more pretending. When she looked up again, her eyes were pure mockery. "What do you think you are? Who kept coming back to me while Zara needed you? Who whispered that her body went soft?""Admit it. You chase whatever's new. You—" she laughed, sharp and cruel, "—you're the one who drove her to death."Eric snapped. She was right. He wanted the younger, prettier body. And now he was dumping the blame on her.If he hadn't shielded Velda—if he hadn't ignored his mate—Zara wouldn't have ended like this."Shut up! Shut up!"He kicked her in the face. Teeth

He kept flipping.[January 13, 2026. Today is the day Eric and I became mates. I was ambushed by a vampire. I called him to save me, but he thought I was lying. I reacted fast. Barely survived. I cooked a full table and waited to celebrate our anniversary. He never came. At dawn, I found out he was stargazing with Velda.]Eric's tears hit the page. 'What was I doing that night?'Pointing out constellations to Velda. Making her smile. He turned to the last page. The handwriting was shaky. Faint. Stained with dried tears.[If there's a next life, I want to be a wolf without a sense of smell. Then when my mate comes home carrying another she-wolf's scent, I won't know. Moon Goddess, please. In my next life, I never want to know Eric again.]"No!"Eric crushed the journal to his chest and curled on the floor. A broken, savage howl ripped out of him. That night, every wolf in Moonveil territory heard their Alpha fall apart. The only thing he wouldn't touch was Zara's phone. He wa

A figure burning with violent fury stepped closer. The chatter inside the cave died."H-Hey, Alpha?"One Omega spotted him and jumped up, clueless death had just walked in.Eric's gaze swept the cave. The home in his memory was gone.Everything was smashed. Trash and empty liquor bottles covered the ground.Rage detonated inside him. Killing intent flared in his eyes as he looked at the Omegas."Who told you could touch my things?! Who gave you the guts?!"He shifted in a blink and lunged. His fangs tore through one wolf's shoulder.Like a rabid beast, he ripped into them until blood soaked the floor."Restore it! Put the cave back exactly how it was! If even one mark is missing, I'll take all your lives!"In the end, the cave never went back to what it was.He shifted back to human form and collapsed. His hand moved to his bare neck. A matching token to Zara's used to hang there."You're not allowed to die... Without my permission, you're not allowed to die..." he mutte

The second the healer finished, pain detonated in Eric's skull."Ahhh!!!"He clutched his head and hit the ground. All the pain he should've felt these past years—the pain Zara took for him—came roaring back, vicious and wild. He'd barely tasted it, and he already wanted to die.But Zara endured this for five years. And while she did, she endured his mockery. His insults."I threw the medicine away... I actually threw out her painkillers..." Eric slammed into the wall, wailing. "When she was hurting the most, I dumped her medicine in the trash... I'm not even worthy of being a wolf. I'm worse than a rogue!"And compared to what Zara suffered, what was this?He staggered up, forcing the agony down, and reached for her."Come home with me... Zara, my Luna. Let's go home..."Smack.Daisy knocked his hand away. "Take your filthy hands off her!"She pulled out a parchment. "This is the will Zara left behind."A cold snort. "She made it clear she wants to be buried in my pack's

Eric staggered back, his voice coming out warped."Zara clearly—"He tripped again and hit the ground. Then something clicked. He shot back to his feet."Oh, I get it! Zara, this is just another one of your tricks, right? If you could find a witch to secretly sever the mate bond, you can fake looking like this too!"The more he talked, the more he believed it.His arrogance crept back in.Eric stared down at the body on the stone platform."Zara, last chance. I'll count to three. Get up."Daisy shook her head."Three... Two..."Nothing.His jaw tightened. "One!"She didn't move.He swallowed. His voice dropped. "0.9... 0.8... 0.7..."0.1..."Still nothing. His hands hovered, lost. He looked like a clueless pup."Alright, Zara. Quit messing around. Let's go home..."He reached to pull her up—His hand froze.Under the loose black robe—the one he used to sneer made her look like a pig—there was nothing left but bone and skin. A hollow shell.Every word he'd thrown

I kept my voice steady when I met her. "I want the cleanest break. Even if he stands right in front of me, he won't feel anything through the mate bond. And make sure he never knows you did it."The witch stared at me. "Zara, forcefully breaking a soul contract will cut your life short. In your con

In the days after, everything I ate came back up.My stomach emptied until there was nothing left. Not even bile. So I stopped eating. With what little money I had left, I contacted the Witch and booked the Moonreturn Rite for after my death.I called Daisy too. Told her when I died, she was to t

A brutal cramp ripped through my stomach.Black blood filled my mouth.Daisy started yelling about the healer, but I grabbed her wrist."Take me home."I wasn't dying in a room that smelled like antiseptic. I wasn't letting the pack see me like this.I tried to stay awake so she wouldn't panic.

My time was running out. No reason to keep any of it.I called the weakest Omegas and handed over everything Eric ever gave me—rare furs, gemstones, all of it."Luna... you're really giving this to me? This is prime silver fox fur. If Alpha finds out..."The young Omega's voice shook. Her eyes di
