Chapter 8

Author: Anonymous
"Dawn…"

Seven days had passed since my departure. Instead of looking for Ruth, Jordan ended up at the place I used to work.

It was a high-security area. The researchers weren't the only ones who needed protection—their research results needed it too.

So, Jordan was stopped at the gates. He'd changed drastically. He was unshaven, and he looked as haggard as a homeless man.

The guard on duty tried to chase him away several times, mistaking him for a beggar. He said, "This isn't where you should be. Go somewhere else if you want money."

His hurtful words cut deep, making Jordan's face contort in pain. He'd spent the past week remembering how he'd treated me in the past. Had I been in as much pain as he was now?

"Did you hear me? Leave!" The guard pulled out an electric baton, angry that Jordan wasn't budging.

Jordan returned to his senses and mumbled, "I'm not a beggar. I'm here to see my wife—her name is Dawn Lowell. She works here. Do you know her? Can you head inside and ask he

In experiments and research, there would always be consequences that were beyond our control. Over the years, no matter how cautious we'd been, we'd still lost many people. Those who had survived were left with permanent injuries of varying degrees. That was the reason I had no right to complain about a few missing fingers. Compared to failure and death, I had to thank my lucky stars that I was still alive. I was around to see the world and witness the outcome of our research.I said gravely, "I won't let you down, Bill."…The day I would receive the award soon arrived. I'd gone over my thank-you speech countless times while learning to accept this brand-new world again. After having been cut off from society for 12 years, I couldn't keep up with or understand many things. However, it was a relief to see that there was new technology all around. It was a sign of my nation's strength, and it also meant that everything I'd sacrificed was worth it."Let's invite Ms. Dawn Lowell to

Tears started streaming down Jordan's face when he realized he'd failed to find me again. Someone recognized my name as it fell from his lips and whispered something to the people around them.Five minutes later, Bill Smith, the person in charge at the lab, came out and looked Jordan up and down. He knew everything about each researcher's family, so naturally, he recognized Jordan.Something struck him as odd, though. I'd already been gone for a week. Logically speaking, as my husband, Jordan couldn't be unaware of that."Hi, I'm Bill Smith. I'm the person in charge here, so you can speak to me if you need anything," Bill said. Duty-bound, he invited Jordan to his office and found out what had happened. It was a typical family issue, and after hearing Jordan say that I'd asked for a divorce, Bill already knew what to do. He said, "Mr. Jensen, this is a family matter. I can't reveal Dawn's whereabouts to you. "Since she's already decided to get a divorce, we will respect her choic

Vivian shed a few tears as she spoke, and they carried traces of genuine emotion, leaving Jordan at a loss. He said, "This has nothing to do with you, Viv. Dawn is just throwing a tantrum—she's used to being wild and unruly because she grew up in an orphanage. Just forget about her, alright? She'll be back in a few days."He'd shed tears of heartache for me when he'd first learned that I'd grown up in an orphanage. Now that he was sick of me, he called me wild and unruly because of my upbringing."Let's eat, then." Vivian blinked at him, feeling cheered up. The fact that he was willing to pacify her meant that he cared about her. She just needed to work harder from now on—she would eventually become the lady of this household.Ruth was the only other person pleased by how things had turned out. She'd hidden a drink she couldn't bear to open in her room, and she retrieved it, holding it up like the adults she'd seen on TV."Daddy, I wish we could always be like this," she chirpe

Honestly, it was good that things had ended like this. Jordan and I would walk our own paths from now on."Professor Lowell, are you okay?" The person who'd come to pick me up was startled by what had happened.I gathered myself and smiled faintly at him. "As good as can be. Let's go."As I boarded the plane to leave the city, I saw that Jordan had sent me multiple texts. All the photos he'd sent showed how happy he and Ruth were.I greedily stroked Ruth's face on the screen. Then, I replied with trembling fingers, "I wish you both happiness and peace."That was the only wish I could give them. I wished for my child to be safe, and I hoped for my former beloved to be happy. I also prayed they would truly be happy once I was gone.As the plane started to take off, I blocked Jordan on everything and turned my phone off.He was furious. He'd sent me those photos in an attempt to make me jealous and come home. He didn't expect me to calmly give him and Ruth my blessings. That was s

The doctor shook his head without saying anything else. I sat there quietly, waiting for him to treat my wounds. It was past midnight when I returned to Ruth's hospital ward. However, she was long gone.A nurse patted my shoulder kindly and said, "Miss, the child's father left a message for you. He said he would be leaving with her first because she was being too fussy.""Alright." I forced an ugly grimace. I didn't expect Jordan, Ruth, and Vivian to leave while I was having my wounds treated. The night wind howled as I walked home. I didn't know how to describe how I felt. When I was younger, Jordan used to treat me with such care. He would worry about me suffering and struggling and would insist on picking me up, no matter where I was. Now, someone else had taken my place in his heart. Even the child I'd risked my life bringing into this world didn't care about me. I couldn't help feeling pathetic for ending up in such a situation.I was halfway home when Jordan suddenly calle
