Damian stared at his assistant.

“Say that again.”Marcus swallowed.

“Someone accessed the old Carter account about twenty minutes ago.”Damian’s expression hardened.“Who?”

“We don’t know.”

“Then find out.”

“I’m trying. Whoever did it bypassed two layers of security.”Damian went still.Only three people had ever known the account existed. His father.Amelia’s father, and Damian. One of them was dead. One had been disgraced and buried beneath years of scandal, and the last,Damian looked toward the empty space where Amelia had been standing. His jaw tightened.“Pull every access log.”

“I already did.”

“And?”Marcus hesitated.“There’s something else.”Damian’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“The person didn’t just access the account.”Marcus handed him his phone.“They searched for one specific file.”Damian looked at the screen.

VAUGHN-CARTER AGREEMENT — ORIGINAL

For the first time that night, the controlled mask on Damian’s face cracked.“That file was destroyed.”

“That’s what I thought.”

Damian took the phone.“Where did they search from?”Marcus lowered his voice.“Your office.”Silence,Damian slowly lifted his eyes.

“My office?”

“Yes.”

“Who has access?”

“Me. You,security,and…”Marcus stopped.

“And who?”

“Your family.”

Damian’s grip tightened around the phone. His family. That narrowed the possibilities. And made the situation worse.Across the city, Amelia sat alone in the back of a taxi. The gala felt like a lifetime ago.She stared through the window as the lights of Manhattan blurred past her.For five years, she had believed leaving Damian would be the hardest thing she ever did.She had been wrong, the hardest part was realizing how long she had stayed. Her phone vibrated. She glanced at the screen, unknown Number. She almost ignored it,then another message appeared. You should not have signed those papers.

Amelia frowned,a second message followed.Your father never betrayed the Vaughns, her breath caught, she read it again. And again, nobody talked about her father. Not anymore. His name had become something people lowered their voices around.A failure,a disgraced businessman. The man who had supposedly ruined a powerful family and disappeared beneath the consequences.Amelia had grown up believing the same story.Until now,her fingers moved over the screen.Who is this? The reply came almost immediately.Someone who knows what really happened five years ago.

Amelia’s heart began pounding, five years. The same year she married Damian, the same year her father’s company collapsed, the same year the Vaughn-Carter agreement was signed.A coincidence? She didn’t believe in coincidences anymore.Another message appeared. If you want the truth, don’t go home.Amelia stared at it.Then came the final message. And don’t trust your husband. She froze, her husband, not her ex-husband,her husband.Because whoever was behind the messages clearly knew something Amelia didn’t.She immediately called the number. It rang once, twice, then went dead.Amelia looked at the screen. For the first time since leaving the gala, fear replaced her anger. Not fear of Damian, fear of what she might discover.Damian was still standing in his office when Marcus spoke again.

“There’s one more thing.”

Damian looked up.

“What?”Marcus placed a thin folder on the desk.“This was found in the old records room.Damian opened it.Inside was a single photograph. Two men stood outside a corporate building. His father. And Amelia’s father, they were shaking hands.Damian stared,he had seen photographs of them before. But never this one, because on the back, written in his father’s handwriting, were six words:We were never supposed to lose.Damian’s blood ran cold,he turned the photograph over again. There was a date.

       Five years ago.

Three days before his father had ordered him to marry Amelia.Damian suddenly remembered something.Something he had buried for years, his father had never told him that the marriage was about protecting the Vaughn family. He had told Damian it was about revenge,he had told him the Carters had destroyed them. And Damian had believed him.

What if that had been a lie?His phone rang.Sophia.Damian stared at the name,he almost ignored it.Then he answered.

“What?”Sophia’s voice was unusually quiet.

“Damian… where are you?”

“At the office.”

“You need to come home.”

“Why?”Silence. Then she whispered,“Because someone came looking for me.”Damian’s eyes sharpened.“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“What happened?”

“I found something in my room.”

“What?”

Sophia took a shaky breath.“A photograph.”

Damian’s stomach tightened.

“What photograph?”Her voice dropped.

“It was a picture of Amelia.”He said nothing.

Then Sophia added,“She wasn’t alone.Damian’s fingers tightened around the phone.“Who was she with?”A pause.“The man your father claimed was dead.”The call ended.Damian stared at the phone.

For the first time in five years, one question mattered more than anything else.

     Was Amelia’s father really dead?

Amelia read the message until the words blurred. He left you the evidence that could destroy the Vaughns. She called the number immediately,it was switched off.“Of course,” she muttered. She tried again, but the result was the same.Whoever had sent the message knew about her father’s company. They knew about the divorce agreement. Most disturbingly, they knew enough to warn her against signing it.She returned to her laptop and opened the dormant holding company’s registration details. The company had been established eleven years earlier, long before her father’s business collapsed. Its records showed almost no activity for years. Then, three months before her father’s death, a new director had been appointed.Richard Vaughn.Amelia went completely still.“Why would Damian’s father be involved in my father’s company?”She clicked through the available records, but the documents were restricted. To access the full file, she would need authorization from the company’s registered represen

Amelia arrived at Eleanor Price’s office ten minutes before their appointment, she had barely slept.Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the documents on her laptop, the strange message about Damian’s inheritance, and her father’s face on that frozen video.Your marriage was never supposed to happen the way it did. What had her father meant? And why had he left instructions that could only be carried out after her marriage ended?“Mrs. Vaughn?”Amelia looked up.A woman in her late fifties stood in the doorway, holding a slim leather folder.“I’m Eleanor Price.”Amelia rose to her feet. “Thank you for seeing me.”“Of course. Please, come in.”The office was quiet and tastefully furnished. Eleanor gestured toward a chair before sitting opposite her.“I must warn you that your father’s instructions were unusually strict.”“I’m beginning to realize that.”Eleanor studied her for a moment.“Have you signed the divorce papers?”“No.”“Do you intend to?”Amelia thought of Damian standing in

Damian’s final words followed me long after I left the storage facility. She’ll discover why you married her, I hated that sentence. Not because I believed it, but because a small, unwelcome part of me wondered whether there was something I had never known about the man I had spent five years loving.I climbed into a taxi and gave the driver my address. My phone vibrated before we reached the main road.Damian: We need to talk,I stared at the message.Me: We already did,his reply came almost immediately.Damian: Not about this.Me: Whatever it is, you can tell your wife.Three dots appeared, disappeared, then appeared again.Damian: This isn’t about Sophia.I locked my phone. For five years, Damian had perfected the art of making me wait. Wait for his attention. Wait for an explanation. Wait for the smallest indication that I mattered,I was done waiting. When I reached my apartment, I locked the door behind me and placed my handbag on the table, the envelope was still there. So was the flash

Pain, perhaps. For once, I couldn’t tell what Damian Vaughn was feeling. And I didn’t care enough to ask.I slipped the envelope into my handbag and walked toward the exit.“Where are you going?” he asked.“Home.”“I’ll take you.”“No, thank you.”“Amelia, it’s late.”“And?”His jaw tightened. “Can you stop making everything difficult for five minutes?”I turned around slowly.“Everything difficult? You announced another woman’s pregnancy in front of an entire room full of people. You handed me divorce papers as if you were dismissing an employee. Now you show up here and expect me to climb into your car because you say so?”He said nothing.“I’m not your responsibility anymore, Damian. Remember? You made that very clear.”I continued toward the door. This time, he followed.“I’m not trying to control you.”“Then stop following me.”“Someone accessed my father’s old business records. Someone else sent me a message warning me about you. And now I find you in a storage facility connected to you

Amelia stared at the man in front of her“Destroy both families?” she repeated. “What does that mean?”The man glanced toward the entrance.“We don’t have time for this.”“Then make time!” Her voice cracked. “You appear out of nowhere, tell me my father knew this day would come, and expect me to leave without an explanation?”His expression softened, but only for a moment.“You have your father’s eyes.”Amelia frowned. “Don’t talk about my father as if you knew him.”“I knew him better than you think.”“Then tell me what happened to him.”The man looked down at the photograph in her hand.“Your father made a deal with Richard Vaughn. A deal that was supposed to protect their businesses and secure their families’ futures.”“Richard Vaughn is Damian’s father.”“I know who he is.”“Then what went wrong?”“Greed.”The answer came without hesitation.Amelia shook her head. “My father lost everything before he died. His company collapsed, his partners abandoned him, and people whispered that he’d

Amelia read the message three times.Someone is already waiting for you there, her first instinct was to call Damian, she hated that.Even after everything he’d done, he was still the person her mind reached for when something felt wrong. Her thumb hovered over his name, then she remembered the gala.Sophia’s hand on his arm,his announcement. The divorce papers,Amelia locked her phone. No,she wasn’t calling Damian, not this time.If someone wanted her to be afraid, she wouldn’t give them the satisfaction, she grabbed her coat and slipped her phone into her handbag. Before leaving, she looked around the apartment,it was strange. She had spent years dreaming about having a place of her own,Now that she finally had one, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being watched.Amelia walked to the window, across the street, a black SUV was parked beneath a streetlight. Its engine was running, she couldn’t see the driver. Her stomach tightened, she stepped away from the window.Maybe it was nothing, maybe sh
