Amelia didn’t sleep.By the time the taxi stopped outside the small apartment building she’d rented months ago and never expected to use, the sky over New York had begun to lighten. She sat in the back seat for several seconds, staring at the message on her phone.Your father never betrayed the Vaughns. It shouldn’t have affected her this much. She had spent years accepting the story. Her father had made a reckless business decision. The Vaughns had lost millions.

The Carter name had been ruined. And somehow, Amelia had been left to carry the shame. Then, five years ago, the Vaughns had offered a solution.Marriage, she had accepted. Not because she loved Damian, not then. She had simply believed it was the only way to protect what remained of her family.Somewhere along the way, she’d made the mistake of falling in love with him.And now she was paying for it,Amelia finally stepped out of the taxi, her hand instinctively moved toward her stomach. She stopped, she still hadn’t told Damian. And after what happened tonight, she wasn’t sure she ever would.Inside the apartment, Amelia dropped her handbag on the sofa,it was small compared to the Vaughn mansion.Plain, quiet, and completely hers. For the first time in years, she didn’t have to wonder whether Damian would come home,She didn’t have to wait for footsteps outside her bedroom. She didn’t have to pretend she wasn’t hurt when he walked past her without saying a word. She sat on the edge of the bed, then her phone rang, the same unknown number.Amelia stared at it,this time, she answered.

“Who are you?”No response.

“I’m not playing games,” she said. “You contacted me. Tell me what you want.”A man’s voice finally came through, low, calm, older .

“You want to know what happened to your father?”Amelia’s heart stopped for a beat.

“Yes.”

“Then stop looking for answers through Damian.”Her eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

“Because Damian doesn’t know the truth.”She stood.“What does that mean?”

“You’ve spent five years believing the wrong story.”

“Then tell me the right one.”The man was silent.

“I can’t.”Amelia’s frustration rose.

“Then why call me?”

“To warn you.”

“About what?”Another pause.

“Your divorce isn’t the end of this, Amelia.”She frowned.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“You signed away more than a marriage tonight.”The call ended.Amelia slowly lowered the phone, her mind raced. What exactly had she signed? The divorce papers had looked ordinary.Hadn’t they? She hurriedly opened the copies she’d taken from the gala, she read through them again, nothing unusual. Then she reached the final page, her eyes stopped.A clause she’d barely noticed before. All claims to marital assets shall be subject to the terms of the original Carter-Vaughn agreement,Amelia’s breathing slowed.Original agreement, the same agreement someone had searched for tonight, she grabbed her laptop. If the original agreement still existed somewhere, she was going to find it.

Across the city, Damian stood in Sophia’s apartment. The photograph lay on the table between them,he hadn’t touched it.

“Where did you get this?”Sophia folded her arms.

“It was in my bedroom.”

“Who put it there?”

“I don’t know.”Damian looked at her.

“Who else has access to this apartment?”

“No one.”His eyes returned to the photograph,Amelia stood in the picture beside an unfamiliar man,the image was old.Maybe ten years, she looked younger. The man beside her was older, with the same sharp eyes Damian remembered from childhood photographs,Richard Carter,Amelia’s father.Damian picked up the photograph.“Where is the original?Sophia shook her head.

“There wasn’t one.”

“Then someone wanted me to see this”.Yes.Damian looked at her.

“Why?”Sophia didn’t answer immediately, then she said quietly,“Maybe because someone wants you to question everything you’ve been told.”Damian’s expression darkened.“And what exactly have I been told?”Sophia looked away.

“That’s something you should ask your father.Damian froze, his father had been dead for three years. But his words still controlled Damian’s life, the feud, the marriage. The Carter family’s downfall, everything .Damian placed the photograph back on the table.

“Who are you really, Sophia?”Her face changed, just for a second. But Damian noticed.

“I told you who I am.”

“No.”He stepped closer.

“You’ve told me what you want me to believe.Sophia’s lips parted. Before she could answer, Damian’s phone rang.Marcus,Damian answered.

“Talk.”

“We found something.”

“What?”

“The person who accessed the Carter account.”Damian waited,Marcus lowered his voice.“It wasn’t someone outside the company.”Damian’s eyes hardened.

“Who was it?”

“We traced the access.”A pause.

“Damian… it came from inside your father’s old private office.”Silence,Damian slowly looked toward Sophia, then at the photograph. Then back at his phone, someone had accessed a secret account.Someone had left a photograph of Amelia’s father. And now someone was using his father’s old office. This wasn’t about Amelia anymore. It was about the past,And somebody was making sure Damian couldn’t escape it.

Amelia sat in the darkness of her apartment, laptop glowing in front of her.She had searched every record she could access.Nothing,no original agreement,no copy.No mention of its location. Then she remembered something. Her father had always kept important documents in one place, not at the company, not at home.A storage facility in Queens,Amelia hadn’t thought about it in years, she immediately stood. Then stopped, her phone lit up,a new message. If you go to the storage facility, don’t go alone.

Amelia stared at the screen,a second message appeared.

Someone is already waiting for you there.

Her stomach tightened, she looked toward the door. For the first time since leaving Damian, Amelia realized something terrifying. She hadn’t escaped the past.

The past had followed her home.!

Amelia read the message until the words blurred. He left you the evidence that could destroy the Vaughns. She called the number immediately,it was switched off.“Of course,” she muttered. She tried again, but the result was the same.Whoever had sent the message knew about her father’s company. They knew about the divorce agreement. Most disturbingly, they knew enough to warn her against signing it.She returned to her laptop and opened the dormant holding company’s registration details. The company had been established eleven years earlier, long before her father’s business collapsed. Its records showed almost no activity for years. Then, three months before her father’s death, a new director had been appointed.Richard Vaughn.Amelia went completely still.“Why would Damian’s father be involved in my father’s company?”She clicked through the available records, but the documents were restricted. To access the full file, she would need authorization from the company’s registered represen

Amelia arrived at Eleanor Price’s office ten minutes before their appointment, she had barely slept.Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the documents on her laptop, the strange message about Damian’s inheritance, and her father’s face on that frozen video.Your marriage was never supposed to happen the way it did. What had her father meant? And why had he left instructions that could only be carried out after her marriage ended?“Mrs. Vaughn?”Amelia looked up.A woman in her late fifties stood in the doorway, holding a slim leather folder.“I’m Eleanor Price.”Amelia rose to her feet. “Thank you for seeing me.”“Of course. Please, come in.”The office was quiet and tastefully furnished. Eleanor gestured toward a chair before sitting opposite her.“I must warn you that your father’s instructions were unusually strict.”“I’m beginning to realize that.”Eleanor studied her for a moment.“Have you signed the divorce papers?”“No.”“Do you intend to?”Amelia thought of Damian standing in

Damian’s final words followed me long after I left the storage facility. She’ll discover why you married her, I hated that sentence. Not because I believed it, but because a small, unwelcome part of me wondered whether there was something I had never known about the man I had spent five years loving.I climbed into a taxi and gave the driver my address. My phone vibrated before we reached the main road.Damian: We need to talk,I stared at the message.Me: We already did,his reply came almost immediately.Damian: Not about this.Me: Whatever it is, you can tell your wife.Three dots appeared, disappeared, then appeared again.Damian: This isn’t about Sophia.I locked my phone. For five years, Damian had perfected the art of making me wait. Wait for his attention. Wait for an explanation. Wait for the smallest indication that I mattered,I was done waiting. When I reached my apartment, I locked the door behind me and placed my handbag on the table, the envelope was still there. So was the flash

Pain, perhaps. For once, I couldn’t tell what Damian Vaughn was feeling. And I didn’t care enough to ask.I slipped the envelope into my handbag and walked toward the exit.“Where are you going?” he asked.“Home.”“I’ll take you.”“No, thank you.”“Amelia, it’s late.”“And?”His jaw tightened. “Can you stop making everything difficult for five minutes?”I turned around slowly.“Everything difficult? You announced another woman’s pregnancy in front of an entire room full of people. You handed me divorce papers as if you were dismissing an employee. Now you show up here and expect me to climb into your car because you say so?”He said nothing.“I’m not your responsibility anymore, Damian. Remember? You made that very clear.”I continued toward the door. This time, he followed.“I’m not trying to control you.”“Then stop following me.”“Someone accessed my father’s old business records. Someone else sent me a message warning me about you. And now I find you in a storage facility connected to you

Amelia stared at the man in front of her“Destroy both families?” she repeated. “What does that mean?”The man glanced toward the entrance.“We don’t have time for this.”“Then make time!” Her voice cracked. “You appear out of nowhere, tell me my father knew this day would come, and expect me to leave without an explanation?”His expression softened, but only for a moment.“You have your father’s eyes.”Amelia frowned. “Don’t talk about my father as if you knew him.”“I knew him better than you think.”“Then tell me what happened to him.”The man looked down at the photograph in her hand.“Your father made a deal with Richard Vaughn. A deal that was supposed to protect their businesses and secure their families’ futures.”“Richard Vaughn is Damian’s father.”“I know who he is.”“Then what went wrong?”“Greed.”The answer came without hesitation.Amelia shook her head. “My father lost everything before he died. His company collapsed, his partners abandoned him, and people whispered that he’d

Amelia read the message three times.Someone is already waiting for you there, her first instinct was to call Damian, she hated that.Even after everything he’d done, he was still the person her mind reached for when something felt wrong. Her thumb hovered over his name, then she remembered the gala.Sophia’s hand on his arm,his announcement. The divorce papers,Amelia locked her phone. No,she wasn’t calling Damian, not this time.If someone wanted her to be afraid, she wouldn’t give them the satisfaction, she grabbed her coat and slipped her phone into her handbag. Before leaving, she looked around the apartment,it was strange. She had spent years dreaming about having a place of her own,Now that she finally had one, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being watched.Amelia walked to the window, across the street, a black SUV was parked beneath a streetlight. Its engine was running, she couldn’t see the driver. Her stomach tightened, she stepped away from the window.Maybe it was nothing, maybe sh
