Chapter 1

The smell of disinfectant filled the hospital corridors. Hedgar Stane’s parents wept in front of the burn unit’s ICU.

But I felt as if there was a filter over my ears. The noise around me was hard to make out.

My mother took my hand. “Henry, go keep Hedgar’s parents company. They need you.”

I snapped out of my reverie and shook my dizzy head.

At that moment, the attending physician walked out and solemnly told Hedgar’s parents to be prepared.

“The fire was too strong. The patient suffered third-degree burns on her face and neck. Even though we managed to save her, she will be permanently scarred.

“The skin tissue on her face will shrivel and change to varying degrees. She won’t be able to return to how she looked even with plastic surgery.”

In other words, the face Hedgar was so proud of was ruined.

Irene, Hedgar’s mother, fell limp on the floor, and I instinctively touched my completely unharmed face.

My face was smooth, and its lines obvious, just like how I had looked before.

I had returned to the past.

In my previous life, Hedgar ran into a few hooligans on her way home in the middle of the night.

A man passed by and helped her when she was isolated and helpless. His presence was like that of a savior to her. Soon, the two of them fell in love.

But Hedgar’s parents felt uneasy about their relationship because they did not know the man’s origins.

One day, while they were having a meal, Irene lectured Hedgar, “No upstanding member of society would linger around the entrance to a residential area in the middle of the night! He might have been in cahoots with those drunkards!”

Hedgar scowled and retorted, “I told you, if he hadn’t shown up when he did, who knows what would have happened to me!”

“And that gives you a pass to date him? Hedgar, you’re too naive. Look at Henry. Would his parents let him date a—”

I had been focusing on eating when my name was mentioned.

Before Irene could finish, Hedgar stormed out of the house.

This time, I remained seated at the dining table and just watched her leave in anger instead of chasing after her.

In my previous life, once I arrived at Hedgar’s rented place, I saw it go up in flames. I rushed in to save her, only to have a falling beam smash into my face.

From then on, my face was covered in horrific scars, and I could not return to how I had looked before.

Out of guilt, Hedgar volunteered to marry me.

“What about him?” I asked softly.

She shrugged nonchalantly, “My parents don’t agree to me dating him anyway. Why should I force it?”

She had said it in such a relaxed fashion that I was caught off guard by her behavior after our wedding.

She sometimes got drunk and cried as she hugged me.

Then, my wounds got infected and started rotting. In time, the infection got so bad that I had to go through a large-scale skin graft.

One day, I accidentally heard a conversation between Hedgar and her parents. “He’s so disfigured that it’d be better for him to die. Why is he still alive?”

I had given up on everything because of the hint of pity I had for Hedgar, but she was wishing that I would die…

In despair, I floored the gas pedal when we were both in a car and rammed it into a bridge pier.

Right before the car exploded, Hedgar abandoned me and tried to flee.

But this was a death trap that no one could escape.

At the final moments of her life, Hedgar roared, “If I could choose again, I’d rather be disfigured than be with you again!”

I sneered and glared at Leon sharply. “Since you’ve already joined the ranks of upper class society, why have your wife take revenge on the Stanes? It’s all because of your pitiful pride, really.”Leon’s expression turned dark, and he threatened me, “If I could destroy the Stanes, I can destroy your family too!”I calmly unlocked my phone. This time, I showed all of the photos to Leon and said indifferently, “Transfer the money into my bank account before 6 p.m. tomorrow. If I don’t see it, I’m going to show everyone these interesting pictures.”I stepped toward the exit. As I walked past him, I whispered, “Didn’t you work hard to be with Hedgar? So, why are you doing this to your former sugar mommy? You just want to wipe out this part of your past, don’t you?”Before long, I heard the sound of glass shattering behind me. I sneered. Even if he managed to marry a rich woman, he still could not keep his composure. At the end of the day, he was just a clown. The next day,

After I married Hedgar in my previous life, Irene and James treated me kindly, but only in the beginning. As time passed and we did not have any children, they started ignoring me. But in this timeline, Hedgar was the one with her face ruined, they wanted me to marry her. I just could not find it in myself to treat them kindly. But my father pitied them. He paid James’s hospital bills and even hired a professional caretaker to take care of him. After returning home, he kept on sighing. “James is truly pitiful. He even took care of stray cats, so how did he end up like this?“It’s a pity that Hedgar is such a disappointment.“Henry, is there any way for them to get the money back?”Theoretically, there was, but it was difficult. After all, this was a carefully crafted revenge by Leon’s wife. She had most likely transferred the money to another account. “Forget about Hedgar, but James’s hospital bills are going to be expensive.”I looked down. I did not care abo

In the end, I asked gently, “Do your parents know you came here?”Hedgar ducked her head and said nothing. “You’re not going to tell me you came specifically to visit my restaurant, are you?”Hedgar remained glum and silent. I sighed and was about to ask her to leave when she finally said, “Henry, my family is broke.”Even if I already had a hunch, I was stunned by the news. “But… how?”The Stanes owned a few shops in the most developed place in the city center. The income from those shops alone was enough for Hedgar to live a life without worry. My question made Hedgar break down in tears. At that moment, I was reminded of my past self weeping. But Hedgar was not as gentle as I was. Whenever I cried, all I ever got was her leaving with a slam of the door. “Henry, I’m really sorry. Please come back to me.”I laughed at that. She said that being with me was a mistake in my previous life. But she was asking for us to be together this time? One could not have the bes

“You ruined my happiness! Are you happy now?“I want to puke at the thought that we spent the past twenty or so years seeing each other every day.”I became sober at that moment and stared at her in shock as she became an entirely different person. The sudden change in personality caught me entirely off guard. But my puzzlement was just a cheap act to her. “Stop pretending! If I hadn’t forced you to say it, you wouldn’t have told me the truth!“Henry, when are you going to stop pretending to be someone worthy of pity?”Then, Hedgar left with a loud slam of the door. Her heartlessness trampled all over my heart. It was only later that I learned that Leon had gotten engaged that day. He married a rich woman with a grown son. …Irene also tried to get me to marry Hedgar, so I started ignoring the Stanes. Even so, Irene tried multiple times to talk to me. I refused her each time with the harshest words. I told her that I did not want to waste my bright future by taking

“Dad, need this?” I imitated the people on TV to make him happy, only to find him angrier. “What’s wrong?” I stopped joking around. “Did you argue with Mom again?”We had been neighbors with the Stanes for years, and this was the first time my dad yelled at them.“Your mom heard that the Stanes’ company hasn’t been doing too well lately, so she went over to ask them whether they needed any help. “But do you know what James said?”I quietly waited for him to continue, only to see him get so angry that his face turned red.“That old fart actually asked me to convince you to marry Hedgar!”I was stunned. James was far too shameless!“He even said that they were in the wrong for bringing up Hedgar to be so immature and that he can tell that you like her. If so, why didn’t they stand up for you when Hedgar said all those things about you?”I sneered. So, this was what they were planning. “We didn’t bring you up so that you’d be a disfigured woman’s slave! If she’s acting

But Leon and his family were unreasonable and said that the money was compensation for the mental trauma they had to go through. They did not return a single cent. Not only did the Stanes lose their money, but also embarrassed themselves. They were utterly humiliated. After living in the area for decades, they no longer had the courage to even leave their house. I wanted to have nothing to do with this, but Hedgar asked to meet me in the residential area’s park. I immediately rejected her, but my father insisted on me meeting her to help her come around.Hedgar shambled over slowly. She had great difficulty walking through the gravel road. When I did not move to help her, she looked awkward. “I might look like an idiot to you. Everyone in the area is laughing at me now.”I was thinking about hurrying back to have dinner at home, so I nodded. “Yeah.”It had been a year since we last met, and she had become much thinner. Her clothes were no longer as beautiful as bef
