Chapter 2

Author: Shaw Henn
After taking a hot shower, I sat on the bed, staring at the clock on the wall. The minute hand made one full rotation.

Then, Sienna called. "Vincent, I'm not coming home tonight."

I bit down on my lower lip without realizing it. I could faintly hear the sound of a shower on her end.

"You promised me."

There was a hint of helplessness in her voice. "Nicholas' ex-girlfriend brought people to his place and caused a scene. I'm worried something might happen to him, just like what happened to you, so I'm staying here tonight."

A faint bitterness spread through my chest.

After what happened to me, she was not willing to take the chance that something might happen to Nicholas.

I did my best to keep my voice calm. "Sienna, that's his problem. He can ask the building management to handle it. If that doesn't work, he can call the police. It's not your place to get involved."

Sienna's voice turned cold. "Nicholas is my employee. You expect me to just leave him to fend for himself? Vincent, you're just bitter. You want Nicholas to go through the same thing you did."

I was speechless. It felt as though a giant hand had clenched around my heart.

So, this was how she saw me: someone who could not stand to see anyone else doing well.

"Ms. Monroe, is Vincent upset?"

The shower stopped, and Nicholas' voice came through clearly. He must have been standing very close to her.

I closed my eyes. I could almost picture Sienna facing a young man wrapped in a towel, his upper body bare.

He sounded humble, almost aggrieved. "Ms. Monroe, I'm already grateful you were willing to bring me home. I don't want to trouble you any more than I have to. I'll lock the door, put on my headphones, and go to sleep. I'll be fine."

Sienna's voice was slightly hoarse. "Don't be ridiculous. I'm your boss. I have a responsibility to make sure you're safe. I have an international conference call later. I don't have time to deal with your mood, so try to be reasonable."

That last sentence was directed at me.

The call ended without hesitation. The screen went dark, reflecting my tear-streaked face. My eyes were red, and all I could manage was a bitter smile.

I opened my contacts and called the person at the top of my list.

He answered on the third ring.

When I finally spoke, my voice came out hoarse and shaky. I was fighting back tears. "Dominic, I want a divorce…"

Dominic Archer immediately tried to calm me down. I could hear the rustle of fabric through the phone.

"Vincent, what happened? Are you home? I'm coming to you right now."

…

Half an hour later, Dominic arrived. The moment he saw me curled up in the corner, his eyes reddened.

I told him everything that had happened that day.

He clenched both fists, his eyes burning with fury. "Sienna is such a piece of work! She's always putting on that 'I'm better than everyone else' act, but she can't even take care of her own husband. Forget being some elite—she hasn't even done the bare minimum as a wife! Get divorced. You have to. There's no way you can keep living like this!"

I wiped away my tears. "I don't want anything. I just want to get away from her as soon as possible."

Dominic sighed. "Vincent, you're giving up way too much if you divorce her like this. She's the one who emotionally cheated first. She should walk away with nothing. We have to fight for what's yours. Nicholas Everly, right? Just leave him to me. I'll tear that pretentious bastard apart and make sure you get something out of it!"

…

Sienna came home the next morning. She was carrying an elegantly wrapped box. "I heard blind boxes are popular right now, so I bought you the whole set."

I opened it and took a look. The little figures were beautifully made, but I did not recognize a single one.

She had heard they were popular. From whom? And who was the one who liked them?

I knew without asking.

"Thanks," I replied flatly.

Her brows drew together slightly. "You're still upset? Nicholas just graduated from college. He's already having a hard time. Besides me, he doesn't have anyone he can trust."

I glanced at the flowers and said helplessly, "Those are baby's breaths."The blush at the tips of Hazel's ears spread all the way down her neck."Vincent, are you getting tired of me?" Her head drooped, her voice small and listless.I let out a laugh. "If I were, would you stop coming?"Hazel looked at me, her gaze unwavering."No. I'd never do that. I'm going to come here every day to keep an eye on—" She caught herself. "I mean, keep an eye on your flower shop, Vincent."She was in her twenties. It was not hard to see what she was thinking. But I had lost the courage to start over a long time ago.The bell above the door chimed, and I sat up."Welcome to—" My smile froze when I saw who had walked in.Sienna looked around the shop before finally choosing a bouquet of pink roses. They symbolized a special kind of love.Hazel rang her up. Sienna took the bouquet and placed it in my arms. "For you, Vincent. It's been a long time."I set the flowers aside and gave her a small

Sienna's eyes widened."Sienna, the man standing beside you is a beast. He indirectly caused the suffering of two people, and because of him, you've hurt Vincent again and again. Pain, regret, and a deep reluctance to let me go filled her eyes. After we left, Nicholas still tried to put on a pitiful act and beg for mercy.Sienna coldly shook him off. Sienna shook her head. "No! Vincent, don't be like this. I haven't gotten a full night's sleep in days because of you. I've put the company on hold, too. What more do you want from me?""I want you to divorce me." My voice was firm.Nicholas followed us over. When he saw me, his fists clenched slightly. However, on the surface, he put on a look of genuine concern. "Ms. Monroe, you finally found Vincent. I'm so relieved."Then, he turned to me. "Vincent, I know I was wrong about what happened before. You can blame me if you want, but please don't blame Ms. Monroe."I looked at him coldly. "This has nothing to do with you."Sienna frowned. "Vincent."She paused, then softened her tone. "I know I misunderstood you before. You came to the hospital today because you wanted us to work things out, didn't you? So stop being stubborn."Dominic walked over and let out a mocking laugh. "Sienna, you're really good at flattering yourself. What makes you think Vincent wants you back?"Sie

Sienna rushed forward without a second thought, but the officers stationed around the perimeter held her back."You can't disturb the crime scene.""That's Vincent's! That's Vincent…"The veins in her forehead stood out. The bloodstains on the ground silently testified to how brutal Vincent's ordeal had been the night before.Nicholas hurried over and caught hold of Sienna, trying to calm her. "Ms. Monroe, don't worry too much. It could just be a coincidence. Don't scare yourself."Sienna ignored him. She pulled out her phone and called Vincent.Once. Twice. Three times. No answer.A mechanical voice repeated the same message over and over, each repetition making her temples throb."Ms. Monroe, let's go." Nicholas tugged at Sienna's arm. "This place is so bloody. I'm scared."This time, she violently shook him off.Sienna had always been difficult to read, but now she glared at him with a viciousness that bordered on madness. My fingers curled into my palms, my nails digging into the skin.Sienna glanced at her watch. "You want a divorce? Fine. I don't waste time on people who don't matter. You have five minutes to get out. Tomorrow, we'll finalize the divorce."I did not argue.I grabbed a few important documents and some clothes, then walked out.I had barely reached the bottom of the spiral staircase when I ran into Nicholas. He blocked my path, his eyes full of contempt. "Thrown out already? A kept man like you was never good enough for Ms. Monroe. Do the smart thing and step aside."I shot back, "And you think you're any better?""I never said I was a good person." He sneered. "But once I become the man of the Monroe household, I can make even the ugliest things look respectable."He gave a mocking laugh. Then, without warning, he grabbed my hand and slapped himself across the face with it.He turned toward the stairs and screamed, "Vincent, I know I was wrong!
