Chapter 3

Author: Shaw Henn
"I understand."

I put all the blind boxes away in the cabinet.

…

After a long silence, I heard a soft sigh behind me.

The next second, a warm body pressed against my back, and I caught the faint, sweet scent of roses.

Sienna wrapped her arms around me, her voice low. "Vincent, I specifically turned down a meeting to come back and see you. We have an hour together."

If this had happened before, I would have been overjoyed that she had broken her own rules for me.

But now, with my head lowered, I caught a faint trace of cologne on her.

The kind that Nicholas used.

My heart went cold.

Had they held each other this tightly last night, too?

"You're exhausted. Have some breakfast first. I'll make something in the kitchen."

I slipped out of her arms without looking at her and walked into the kitchen.

Dominic had told me that before I confronted her with everything, I needed to keep up the appearance of being completely compliant.

That was the only way to let Sienna's guilt build.

…

By the time the pancakes were ready, Sienna happened to answer a phone call.

She had it on speaker, and Nicholas' sobbing came through loud and clear. "Ms. Monroe… My ex-girlfriend crashed into my car. What am I supposed to do?"

Sienna immediately headed for the door, slipping on her coat with one hand.

When she saw me carrying the pancakes out of the kitchen, her expression darkened.

"Don't worry. I'm coming over now. Take the day off. Don't even think about going to work."

Then, she covered the phone with her hand, an apologetic look on her face.

I spoke before she could. "Go ahead. I'll keep the food warm and wait for you."

The only answer I got was the sound of the door closing.

I curled my lips into a mocking smile.

At least I had been the one to push her away before she left. That way, it had not been quite so humiliating.

I sat at the dining table, reheating the pancakes for the seventh time.

The eighth time, I threw them in the trash.

I looked up housing prices in a small coastal town and bought myself a plane ticket.

The pancakes in the trash had gone cold and clumped together, but my mind had never been clearer.

Dominic had a divorce agreement drafted and sent to me by same-day courier. He also included a background report on Nicholas. He texted me, "This fake nice guy isn't as simple as he looks. I really want to see how Sienna reacts when she finds out."

I skimmed through it.

It was only a few pages, but there was plenty to uncover.

I tucked both documents into the closet and waited for the right moment to give Sienna a surprise of her own.

…

Sienna came back that afternoon with Nicholas.

When she saw how stiff I had gone, she explained, "His ex deliberately went after him, and he can't stay at home right now. I'll let him stay here for tonight."

Nicholas followed close behind her, looking meek and pitiful.

Thinking about what I had read in the report, I raised an eyebrow but said nothing.

I casually browsed home renovation options on my phone.

Sienna came out of the bathroom, still warm from her shower.

When she saw what was on my screen, she frowned. "Why are you looking at that? Are you thinking about moving?"

I backed out of the page and answered casually, "Just looking."

She did not give it another thought. She walked over to the closet to get some clean clothes.

Suddenly, a document fell to the floor. My heart jumped into my throat.

Sienna bent down and picked it up, slowly opening it. It was the divorce agreement.

Her fingers stilled for the briefest moment.

Her voice dropped, her expression darkening. "What does this mean? You want a divorce? Vincent, you really caught me off guard. When did you start thinking about this? I had no idea."

I forced down the panic rising inside me. "You've seen it. Just sign it. Our marriage has been nothing but a formality for a long time anyway."

She gave a derisive snort. "What are you going to do once you leave me? If I hadn't supported you all these years and paid for your paralyzed father's care, you and your father would've starved on the streets by now!"

I glanced at the flowers and said helplessly, "Those are baby's breaths."The blush at the tips of Hazel's ears spread all the way down her neck."Vincent, are you getting tired of me?" Her head drooped, her voice small and listless.I let out a laugh. "If I were, would you stop coming?"Hazel looked at me, her gaze unwavering."No. I'd never do that. I'm going to come here every day to keep an eye on—" She caught herself. "I mean, keep an eye on your flower shop, Vincent."She was in her twenties. It was not hard to see what she was thinking. But I had lost the courage to start over a long time ago.The bell above the door chimed, and I sat up."Welcome to—" My smile froze when I saw who had walked in.Sienna looked around the shop before finally choosing a bouquet of pink roses. They symbolized a special kind of love.Hazel rang her up. Sienna took the bouquet and placed it in my arms. "For you, Vincent. It's been a long time."I set the flowers aside and gave her a small

Sienna's eyes widened."Sienna, the man standing beside you is a beast. He indirectly caused the suffering of two people, and because of him, you've hurt Vincent again and again. If you have any conscience left, agree to the divorce."Dominic led me away. As we passed Sienna, she managed to say, "Fine. I agree to the divorce."She turned and looked at me deeply. Pain, regret, and a deep reluctance to let me go filled her eyes. After we left, Nicholas still tried to put on a pitiful act and beg for mercy.Sienna coldly shook him off. She looked at Nicholas as if he were already dead."You went after my man and got ideas you never should have had. I have plenty of ways to make you wish you were dead."Nicholas passed out. When he opened his eyes again, he had been taken to a notorious underground club. Here, the best outcome he could hope for was becoming a plaything for powerful men with disabilities who were always looking for something more extreme.…The next morning, I ar

Sienna shook her head. "No! Vincent, don't be like this. I haven't gotten a full night's sleep in days because of you. I've put the company on hold, too. What more do you want from me?""I want you to divorce me." My voice was firm.Nicholas followed us over. When he saw me, his fists clenched slightly. However, on the surface, he put on a look of genuine concern. "Ms. Monroe, you finally found Vincent. I'm so relieved."Then, he turned to me. "Vincent, I know I was wrong about what happened before. You can blame me if you want, but please don't blame Ms. Monroe."I looked at him coldly. "This has nothing to do with you."Sienna frowned. "Vincent."She paused, then softened her tone. "I know I misunderstood you before. You came to the hospital today because you wanted us to work things out, didn't you? So stop being stubborn."Dominic walked over and let out a mocking laugh. "Sienna, you're really good at flattering yourself. What makes you think Vincent wants you back?"Sie

Whenever Sienna closed her eyes, all she could picture was the dried blood and the bottle-shaped phone charm lying on the floor. But where had Vincent gone?…At lunchtime, Nicholas noticed that Sienna had not stepped out of her office once all morning. She was taken to the hospital and given an IV, and soon regained consciousness.Nicholas was sitting beside her bed. The moment he saw her open her eyes, tears spilled down his cheeks. "Ms. Monroe, you're finally awake. I was so worried about you. You really need to take better care of yourself."Sienna looked at him. Sienna rushed forward without a second thought, but the officers stationed around the perimeter held her back."You can't disturb the crime scene.""That's Vincent's! That's Vincent…"The veins in her forehead stood out. The bloodstains on the ground silently testified to how brutal Vincent's ordeal had been the night before.Nicholas hurried over and caught hold of Sienna, trying to calm her. "Ms. Monroe, don't worry too much. It could just be a coincidence. Don't scare yourself."Sienna ignored him. She pulled out her phone and called Vincent.Once. Twice. Three times. No answer.A mechanical voice repeated the same message over and over, each repetition making her temples throb."Ms. Monroe, let's go." Nicholas tugged at Sienna's arm. "This place is so bloody. I'm scared."This time, she violently shook him off.Sienna had always been difficult to read, but now she glared at him with a viciousness that bordered on madness. My fingers curled into my palms, my nails digging into the skin.Sienna glanced at her watch. "You want a divorce? Fine. I don't waste time on people who don't matter. You have five minutes to get out. Tomorrow, we'll finalize the divorce."I did not argue.I grabbed a few important documents and some clothes, then walked out.I had barely reached the bottom of the spiral staircase when I ran into Nicholas. He blocked my path, his eyes full of contempt. "Thrown out already? A kept man like you was never good enough for Ms. Monroe. Do the smart thing and step aside."I shot back, "And you think you're any better?""I never said I was a good person." He sneered. "But once I become the man of the Monroe household, I can make even the ugliest things look respectable."He gave a mocking laugh. Then, without warning, he grabbed my hand and slapped himself across the face with it.He turned toward the stairs and screamed, "Vincent, I know I was wrong!
