Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
After returning to my desk, I checked the system and saw that my attendance record had been updated. There was now a glaring red notice that stated I was absent from work for half a day.

I stared at those burning words for a few seconds before closing the webpage.

My colleagues were still discussing what had just happened. They whispered among themselves, stealing glances at me now and then. I pretended not to notice. Tapping away on the employee portal, I pulled up the employee handbook. The latest version, V4.2, was 87 pages long.

I clicked the download button, then searched the file for the attendance regulations. 17 results popped up, covering everything from the lunch break policy to the rules for flexible clock-in approvals.

After placing the file in a folder labeled "Study Material", I put on my headphones and started reading from the very top. I made sure to read every word carefully.

At some point, someone patted me on the shoulder. I took off my headphones and turned around.

It was Abe Oswald, a fellow engineer. With a coffee mug in hand, he gave me an insincere look of sympathy and said, "Don't take it too hard. It's just a promotion. You'll get it next time."

I nodded. "You're right."

Clearly taken aback by how calm I was, Abe froze for a moment before awkwardly walking away. I put my headphones back on and continued studying the employee handbook.

Time slowly ticked by, and eventually, it was lunchtime. My colleagues gathered in small groups and started heading toward the staff cafeteria for lunch.

When a few of them passed by behind me, I overheard their conversation.

"He's still going through the employee handbook, huh? What's the point?"

"I know, right? It's not like he can rewrite the rules. He could memorize the handbook from back to front, and it still wouldn't turn into a promotion letter."

The second voice belonged to Ian Mosley, Michael's best buddy at work. I ignored him.

Just then, my phone screen lit up. I checked the time, and it was exactly 12:30 pm. I heard my other colleagues bustling around behind me. A few of them pulled out blankets and took naps at their desks.

The entire office area fell quiet, with only the hum of the air conditioner in the background.

I didn't put my head down. I didn't even close my eyes. Instead, I continued going through the files, reading every rule, requirement, and remark. Then I picked up a pen and started copying a few lines in my notebook.

At 12:45 pm, Michael poked his head out from his desk. When he saw me still sitting in front of my computer, he frowned. He carried his cup toward the break room, deliberately stopping as he passed me.

"Oh. Not taking a nap today?"

When I ignored him, he raised his voice, as if to ensure that the entire floor could hear him.

"Some people start pretending to be so hardworking the moment they lose their promotion. Hah! What's the point in pretending to be such a diligent employee now? No matter how many times you read the employee handbook, you won't be getting a raise for it."

The handful of colleagues who were still at their desks let out a few snickers, but my pen never stopped moving.

Michael scoffed and walked off.

By 1:00 pm, I'd noted down over 20 rules from the employee handbook. 20 minutes later, I reached the chapter on attendance regulations.

Section 3.7 stated, "Flexible working hours verbally approved by the department director must be submitted for formal approval through the employee portal within 24 hours. Failure to submit the required approval within the specified period will be treated as an absence."

I stared at the clause for a few minutes before opening up the company's internal directory and pulling up Patrick's profile.

He joined the company three years ago. I checked his attendance records. The system showed that over the past six months, he had 23 instances of flexible clock-ins. For 19 of them, I couldn't find any corresponding approval from his superior.

I made a note of that detail and put a star beside it.

Two minutes before the lunch break ended, I closed my notebook and slipped it into my drawer. Michael woke up from his nap, freezing when he saw me standing by the window. He probably hadn't expected me to forego my usual nap completely.

He curled his lip and muttered, "Psycho."

I heard him, but I didn't turn around.

A week later, someone new took over the position of director at the tech center. His name was Zachary Quentin, and he'd been transferred from the head office. Word was that he was a shrewd and capable manager who knew how to get things done.Everyone wondered how the new boss would clean up the mess Patrick had left behind. New bosses always wanted to establish their authority somehow. Who was going to be his first victim? To everyone's surprise, on his first day, Zachary didn't call for a company-wide meeting. He didn't summon the heads of the various departments for meetings, either. Instead, he had his secretary call just one person into his office. That person was me.I walked into the office that had once belonged to Patrick. It looked completely different now. The tacky rosewood ornaments and printed banner bearing the words "Success Is Always Within Reach" were gone. They had been replaced with minimalist modern furniture and several lush green plants.Zachary looked like a

The next day, the entire office was filled with festive cheer. At 10:00 am, a company-wide email titled "Important Notice Regarding Personnel Changes" was sent out. The email itself was rather brief."After careful consideration, the company will be optimizing the management team structure. Effective immediately, Patrick Larkin, formerly Director of the Technology Center, will be transferred to the archives department at the head office, where he will serve as a Senior Advisor."Attached beneath the email was an official document from the head office bearing the company's letterhead. After a moment of silence, suppressed laughter broke out in the office."The archives department? Isn't that where they keep outdated documents?""Senior Advisor, huh? The title sounds nice, but it's really just a cushy dead-end position. He's been put out to pasture.""Serves him right! He brought it on himself.""Of all people to piss off, he had to pick the Grim Reaper.""The Grim Reaper?""Co

I was the biggest "victim" of this situation and the one who'd set the whole thing off. If my punishment wasn't revoked, then everything Patrick had just said would prove to be a mockery. His seemingly sincere apology and earnest declaration that everyone would be treated fairly would end up being nothing but lies.Patrick's lips parted multiple times. He wanted to say something, but it felt like something was lodged in his throat. He couldn't get a single word out.He knew exactly what I was doing. I was putting him on the spot in front of everyone. If he said no, the goodwill he had just managed to regain would collapse in an instant, potentially triggering an even more furious backlash. If he said yes, he would be publicly admitting that his earlier decision had been completely wrong. He would be slapping himself in the face. His authority would be utterly destroyed. He would never be able to gain a strong foothold in the office again. The seconds kept passing. The conference

At 2:50 pm, a meeting notification popped up on the company's internal messaging system."Attention, all employees. Kindly gather for a meeting at 3:00 pm in Conference Room 1."The message came from the director's office. The moment of judgment had arrived. Everyone in the office seemed to have heard the call to arms, and they all stood at once, making their way to the conference room. This time, no one was late. No one dragged their feet. The large conference room quickly filled to capacity. People were even standing in the aisles. The air was thick with tension and anticipation.Michael showed up as well. He tucked himself into the least conspicuous corner, keeping his head lowered. He was afraid to meet anyone else's gaze. After heading into the conference room, instead of choosing a seat at random, I walked straight to the front row and took the seat right in the middle. It was usually reserved for senior management and honored guests, but I took it for myself today, and no

Although everyone returned to their desks, the restless unease still hung in the air.For the next few hours, the company remained in a strange state of paralysis. No one was in the mood to work. Everyone sat at their desks, frantically digging through their attendance records from the past year. The printers kept spitting out page after page. Everyone was cross-checking their records against the list I sent out, one item at a time.A chorus of groans and curses inevitably followed."I'm screwed. I forgot to enable location tracking twice while traveling on business last year. According to the rules, that counts as an absence.""Damn it! I've never submitted my flexible clock-in approval forms within 24 hours. Not once!""I've regularly exceeded my lunch break by three to five minutes. No one ever pointed it out before. Are they going to go back and check now?"Everyone found infractions they'd committed, some of which were major while others were minor. However, having seen how

Patrick's back looked stiff, his shoulders slumped as he trudged back toward the chaotic scene outside the HR department. The crowd automatically parted to let him through, but it wasn't out of respect. They only did it so that they could surround him, making sure he was under scrutiny."Quiet down, everyone!" Patrick took a deep breath and forced himself to put on an air of authority. "If you have a problem, speak up one at a time! Why have all of you gathered here like some rowdy mob?"He wanted to take back control of the situation, but no one was buying his act anymore. Howard was the first to step forward. He waved the attendance records in his hand and said, "I just want a straight answer, Mr. Larkin. Connor lost his promotion because he exceeded his lunch break by one minute."I just checked my own records and found that I forgot to submit approvals for three instances of overtime last month. According to the rules, that counts as an infraction, too. Does that mean I'm als
