Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
After arriving at the office the next morning, I pressed my finger against the scanner, and the machine beeped. My name and employee ID appeared on the screen. I'd clocked in at 8:27 am, which was three minutes earlier than the designated clock-in time.

I turned on my computer and continued studying the employee handbook. I jotted down more notes, especially from the sections on attendance regulations and the flexible clock-in procedures. My notebook was filling up fast.

At noon, everyone took their lunch before lounging around for the rest of their break. I was the only one still sitting in the office area, still poring over the employee handbook.

Michael and Ian put on a little performance in the break room.

"Today's the second day he hasn't taken a nap during the lunch hour."

"It's obviously because he's feeling embarrassed. Now that he's been caught red-handed once, he's too chicken to take naps anymore. I bet you he's abused company policy like this many times in the past."

"Look at him losing his promotion because he overslept for one minute. What an idiot."

Every word made its way into my ears, but I continued staring at the document, my expression unchanged.

On the third day, I clocked in 15 minutes early. Once again, I spent my lunch break studying the employee handbook without taking a nap.

As Michael walked past my desk, he snorted. "Sure. Go ahead and keep pretending."

On day four, while I was eating in the staff cafeteria, Michael carried his tray over to my table and sat across from me.

"You can't blame me for what happened, Connor. I was just following the rules. Mr. Larkin hates people who aren't disciplined. You walked right into the line of fire yourself.

"If you ask me, you should just accept it. If you keep trying to fight the rules and the boss, you'll just be making life harder for yourself."

I finished the last bite of my food, wiped my mouth, and got up. Eyeing Michael, I remarked, "Michael, do you know that you clocked out two minutes before the official end of the workday on three separate days last month?"

Michael's expression hardened. "What are you getting at?"

"Section 4.2 of the attendance regulations states that leaving work two minutes or more early is considered a half-day absence. You left early three times. Per company policy, that means a deduction equivalent to one and a half days' pay, along with the forfeiture of the quarterly performance bonus," I calmly stated.

Michael nearly dropped his fork. "H-how do you know that?"

I turned around and walked away without answering.

On the fifth day, I continued going over company policy. I'd made 57 notes, each one marked with the corresponding page and section number in the employee handbook. And for every single one, I found a corresponding example of a violation committed by someone in the office.

I put Patrick's 19 flexible clock-in records that had missing approval forms into a table. I also compiled Michael's attendance violations from the past year.

They weren't the only examples I found. Not a single person in the entire company had a perfectly clean record.

The employee handbook was filled with overly complicated and excessive rules. Ordinarily, the HR department turned a blind eye to the more reasonable violations, and everyone was used to that.

However, I was now the living example of someone who'd been punished in accordance with company policy. I lost 200 thousand dollars for missing one minute of work.

This positively draconian punishment now loomed over everyone's head like an ax.

I closed my notebook. It was time for me to get the ball rolling.

A week later, someone new took over the position of director at the tech center. His name was Zachary Quentin, and he'd been transferred from the head office. Word was that he was a shrewd and capable manager who knew how to get things done.Everyone wondered how the new boss would clean up the mess Patrick had left behind. New bosses always wanted to establish their authority somehow. Who was going to be his first victim? To everyone's surprise, on his first day, Zachary didn't call for a company-wide meeting. He didn't summon the heads of the various departments for meetings, either. Instead, he had his secretary call just one person into his office. That person was me.I walked into the office that had once belonged to Patrick. It looked completely different now. The tacky rosewood ornaments and printed banner bearing the words "Success Is Always Within Reach" were gone. They had been replaced with minimalist modern furniture and several lush green plants.Zachary looked like a

The next day, the entire office was filled with festive cheer. At 10:00 am, a company-wide email titled "Important Notice Regarding Personnel Changes" was sent out. The email itself was rather brief."After careful consideration, the company will be optimizing the management team structure. Effective immediately, Patrick Larkin, formerly Director of the Technology Center, will be transferred to the archives department at the head office, where he will serve as a Senior Advisor."Attached beneath the email was an official document from the head office bearing the company's letterhead. After a moment of silence, suppressed laughter broke out in the office."The archives department? Isn't that where they keep outdated documents?""Senior Advisor, huh? The title sounds nice, but it's really just a cushy dead-end position. He's been put out to pasture.""Serves him right! He brought it on himself.""Of all people to piss off, he had to pick the Grim Reaper.""The Grim Reaper?""Co

I was the biggest "victim" of this situation and the one who'd set the whole thing off. If my punishment wasn't revoked, then everything Patrick had just said would prove to be a mockery. His seemingly sincere apology and earnest declaration that everyone would be treated fairly would end up being nothing but lies.Patrick's lips parted multiple times. He wanted to say something, but it felt like something was lodged in his throat. He couldn't get a single word out.He knew exactly what I was doing. I was putting him on the spot in front of everyone. If he said no, the goodwill he had just managed to regain would collapse in an instant, potentially triggering an even more furious backlash. If he said yes, he would be publicly admitting that his earlier decision had been completely wrong. He would be slapping himself in the face. His authority would be utterly destroyed. He would never be able to gain a strong foothold in the office again. The seconds kept passing. The conference

At 2:50 pm, a meeting notification popped up on the company's internal messaging system."Attention, all employees. Kindly gather for a meeting at 3:00 pm in Conference Room 1."The message came from the director's office. The moment of judgment had arrived. Everyone in the office seemed to have heard the call to arms, and they all stood at once, making their way to the conference room. This time, no one was late. No one dragged their feet. The large conference room quickly filled to capacity. People were even standing in the aisles. The air was thick with tension and anticipation.Michael showed up as well. He tucked himself into the least conspicuous corner, keeping his head lowered. He was afraid to meet anyone else's gaze. After heading into the conference room, instead of choosing a seat at random, I walked straight to the front row and took the seat right in the middle. It was usually reserved for senior management and honored guests, but I took it for myself today, and no

Although everyone returned to their desks, the restless unease still hung in the air.For the next few hours, the company remained in a strange state of paralysis. No one was in the mood to work. Everyone sat at their desks, frantically digging through their attendance records from the past year. The printers kept spitting out page after page. Everyone was cross-checking their records against the list I sent out, one item at a time.A chorus of groans and curses inevitably followed."I'm screwed. I forgot to enable location tracking twice while traveling on business last year. According to the rules, that counts as an absence.""Damn it! I've never submitted my flexible clock-in approval forms within 24 hours. Not once!""I've regularly exceeded my lunch break by three to five minutes. No one ever pointed it out before. Are they going to go back and check now?"Everyone found infractions they'd committed, some of which were major while others were minor. However, having seen how

Patrick's back looked stiff, his shoulders slumped as he trudged back toward the chaotic scene outside the HR department. The crowd automatically parted to let him through, but it wasn't out of respect. They only did it so that they could surround him, making sure he was under scrutiny."Quiet down, everyone!" Patrick took a deep breath and forced himself to put on an air of authority. "If you have a problem, speak up one at a time! Why have all of you gathered here like some rowdy mob?"He wanted to take back control of the situation, but no one was buying his act anymore. Howard was the first to step forward. He waved the attendance records in his hand and said, "I just want a straight answer, Mr. Larkin. Connor lost his promotion because he exceeded his lunch break by one minute."I just checked my own records and found that I forgot to submit approvals for three instances of overtime last month. According to the rules, that counts as an infraction, too. Does that mean I'm als
